We are in need of a good boy name and it has been quite challenging. I finally got some “guidelines” from my husband about what he is looking for and added in my own thoughts. We agreed to a sort of give and take system. Since it is hard to put a check mark in every category, if a name ranks really high in certain aspects, we’d be willing to overlook another. But the name has to feel balanced in all of these aspects so that we are happy with it. We’d prefer the meaning to always rank high but that is also hard. I hope that makes sense.
Names we’ve considered in the past but aren’t currently at the top of our list include: [name_m]Dante[/name_m], [name_m]Benedict[/name_m], [name_u]Constantine[/name_u], [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], [name_m]Silas[/name_m], [name_u]August[/name_u], [name_m]Vincent[/name_m]. These could return to the top if paired with the right name.
[name_f]Remember[/name_f], meaning is important to us.
I’d love to get some fresh ideas. I feel like I’ve been searching forever for a great name. Based on the above, what would you suggest? Thanks!
[name_m]Alaric[/name_m] “ruler of all”
Alphard “the individual one”
[name_m]Casimir[/name_m] “greatness” (but could also mean “destroyer of peace”)
[name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] “supreme power” or “like the sun” or “far sighted”
[name_m]Darius[/name_m] “to posses goodness”
Faramond “journey protection”
[name_m]Ferdinand[/name_m] “journey courage”
[name_m]Herakles[/name_m] “glory of [name_f]Hera[/name_f]”
Hyperion “he who goes above” (as in the sky)
[name_m]Ignatius[/name_m] “fire”
[name_m]Laszlo[/name_m] “to rule with glory”
[name_m]Lysander[/name_m] “freeing men”/“release of a man”
[name_m]Melchior[/name_m] “king of light”
[name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] “traveler”
[name_m]Rainier[/name_m] “mighty counsel”
[name_m]Xerxes[/name_m] “hero of heroes”
[name_m]Leonidas[/name_m]- lion
[name_m]Theophilus[/name_m]- [name_m]Friend[/name_m] of God
[name_m]Thaddeus[/name_m]- Gift of God
[name_m]Augustus[/name_m]- Great, magnificent
[name_m]Marcellus[/name_m]- [name_m]Young[/name_m] Warrior
[name_m]Andreas[/name_m]- Strong and manly
[name_m]Vincenzo[/name_m]
@hixtwin4 - [name_m]Leonardo[/name_m] is taken in our family (and they also have a [name_m]Maximilian[/name_m]) so I’m not sure about using a [name_m]Leo[/name_m] name although I do like [name_m]Leopold[/name_m]. We’ve had [name_m]Evander[/name_m] on and off our list but it hasn’t quite stuck. Perhaps with the right first or middle name to pair with it? [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] is interesting but feels a little soft (like a cross between [name_f]Amber[/name_f] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f], in my head). I do like [name_m]Edmund[/name_m], but not sure it “goes” with [name_m]Maximus[/name_m] or our last name.
@moonkai - Thanks! [name_m]Maximus[/name_m] is a great name! I do like [name_m]Apollo[/name_m]! Hmmm. [name_m]Aurelius[/name_m] is nice but I can’t help but picture a girl from middle school named [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] and it is less than pleasant. Otherwise I’d like it more. [name_m]Leander[/name_m] is one I go back and forth on, the Lean- part just gives me the vibe of the woman’s name [name_f]Leann[/name_f] which I don’t find attractive. Hmmm, [name_m]Nicodemus[/name_m] is big and bold. Hmmm. I have a cousin named [name_u]Nick[/name_u] ([name_m]Nicholas[/name_m]) so I wouldn’t want another [name_u]Nick[/name_u], but [name_u]Nico[/name_u] is kinda cute. I like [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] from your sig but haven’t been able to get a positive reaction from hubby.
@[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] - I love [name_m]Alaric[/name_m] but don’t like [name_m]Al[/name_m] or [name_m]Rick[/name_m]. What to do! I sort of like [name_m]Casimir[/name_m], [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] (but [name_f]Miley[/name_f] kills it for me), [name_m]Ferdinand[/name_m], [name_m]Ignatius[/name_m], and [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m]. My husband has suggested [name_m]Melchior[/name_m] before (yeah he’s awesome) but I just don’t like it that much. I feel like he’d be into [name_m]Xerxes[/name_m] too because he likes [name_m]Ramses[/name_m]. I think his taste in names is a lot bolder than mine. He even suggested [name_m]Pharaoh[/name_m] with total seriousness and that is just too much for me.
@katieree331 - Hubby likes [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] a lot. I fear it is too much with [name_m]Maximus[/name_m] (the gladiator) to have Spartan [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] as a brother. Thoughts? I like [name_m]Thaddeus[/name_m] a lot but I’m not sure if he likes it. [name_m]Augustus[/name_m]/[name_u]August[/name_u] is my number one choice but my hubby can’t stand the “guh” sound because it reminds him of the word “disGUSting”. I’m very sad over this one and still fighting for it to be a middle name. [name_m]Marcellus[/name_m] is great, we also like [name_m]Marius[/name_m]. My husband’s brother is named [name_m]Marcos[/name_m] so we’d have to decide if we want to use it or not. And [name_m]Vincenzo[/name_m] is nice. We like [name_m]Vincent[/name_m]. And he’s also pushing for [name_m]Venezio[/name_m] so he can have the nickname [name_m]Ezio[/name_m] like the character from Assassin’s [name_m]Creed[/name_m].
Thanks for the comments! More ideas are appreciated!!
What about
[name_m]Xavier[/name_m] [name_m]Balthazar[/name_m], Spanish variation: [name_m]Javier[/name_m] Baltazar ([name_m]Xavier[/name_m] means ‘’[name_u]Bright[/name_u]’’ and [name_m]Balthazar[/name_m] means ‘‘Baal protects the [name_m]King[/name_m]’’)
[name_m]Damian[/name_m] [name_m]Leonard[/name_m], Spanish variation: Damián [name_m]Leonardo[/name_m] ([name_m]Damian[/name_m] means ‘‘to tame, subdue’’ and [name_m]Leonard[/name_m] means ‘‘as strong as a lion’’)
Vincent Louis , Spanish variation: Vicente Luis (Vincent means ‘‘Conquering’’ and Louis means ‘‘renowned warrior’’ )
What about [name_m]Larry[/name_m] for [name_m]Alaric[/name_m], or even [name_u]Ari[/name_u]? [name_u]Ari[/name_u] means eagle in old Norse, and lion in Hebrew, so that’s neat.
@redrover - Great suggestions. I do like [name_m]Damian[/name_m] but it sounds awful close to Demon and that is a bit off-putting. I will ponder these.
@ottilie - Not a [name_m]Larry[/name_m] fan, but [name_u]Ari[/name_u] is definitely a good one! I do prefer the whole name in general. We still call [name_m]Maximus[/name_m] by [name_m]Maximus[/name_m]. Plus we have a 7 year old [name_f]Arianna[/name_f] in the family that goes by [name_u]Ari[/name_u] so I don’t know if that’d be weird: a Boy [name_u]Ari[/name_u], Girl [name_u]Ari[/name_u] thing. But I like it! Thanks!
@Kala_way - [name_f]Love[/name_f] these! We’ve considered them all once upon a time. I’ve been deadset on [name_m]Benedict[/name_m] for a while but its borderline guilty pleasure so I’m a little scared to go for it. Those 3 are all great. I’ll add them to my many lists I need to show my hubby. Thanks!
@apollonia - You get me. I love these. However, my husband hates [name_u]Gus[/name_u] and the “guh” sound in general and just refuses to use [name_u]August[/name_u] names. Its at the top of my list but he won’t consider it unless its in the middle with a really fantastic first name. He likes the meaning of [name_u]August[/name_u]/us but just not the sound. We had Demitry on our list before but I don’t like the meaning. [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] gets tossed around a lot, he’s sold but I’m not.
@tfzolghadr - Oh wow! I’ll need to go over these slowly and get back to ya. Thanks for the list!
Here are some names that I’ve added to my own list that I haven’t yet ran past the hubby. What do you think of these?
[name_u]Oberon[/name_u] - [name_m]Noble[/name_m], Bearlike
[name_m]Conrad[/name_m] - Brave Counsel
[name_m]Leopold[/name_m] - Brave People
[name_m]Amadeus[/name_m] - [name_f]Love[/name_f] of God
[name_m]Azriel[/name_m] - God is my help
[name_m]Aurelius[/name_m] - [name_u]Golden[/name_u] One
[name_m]Cato[/name_m] - All-knowing
[name_m]Alaric[/name_m] - All Powerful Ruler
There are a few more in the running too but these are new to my list. Thoughts?
Thanks for everyone’s help!
P.S. Here’s one hubby just suggested. Cazador. It is Spanish for Hunter. He finds things he likes in Spanish a lot. I think it sounds cool but whoa! and Hunter itself its trendy. But there’s an example of what I’m working with haha
[name_m]Maximus[/name_m] and [name_m]Augustin[/name_m] … [name_u]Max[/name_u] and [name_u]Gus[/name_u] … truly are the ultimate pair, but here are some good alternatives:
I don’t think [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] is too much, on the contrary, I think you need a strong name that can stand up to [name_m]Maximus[/name_m]. I am a fan of the name [name_m]Alaric[/name_m], I prefer [name_u]Oberon[/name_u] as a mn instead of fn. Maybe you can convince hubby to give you a little leeway on the fn if you agree to Cazador for a mn?
@apollonia - Bernabe is a family name so I’ve considered [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] before. [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] is very nice. A cousin recently used [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] as a middle name (for [name_m]Leonardo[/name_m]) and it was “stolen” from my brother/sister-in-law who wanted to use it as a first name. I like it but would feel odd using it after all that: copying a stolen name. Yikes. And the couple that stole it also have a [name_m]Maximilian[/name_m]. We had our [name_m]Maximus[/name_m] after him so… yeah. I like [name_m]Dominic[/name_m], husband doesn’t. I like [name_m]Felix[/name_m] but its the name of my husband’s boss so that doesn’t work. [name_f]Love[/name_f] [name_m]Leopold[/name_m], but once again, [name_m]Leo[/name_m] is “taken” by quite a few people actually, however none are Leopolds. [name_m]Nicolai[/name_m] is very cool. I also like [name_m]Raphael[/name_m]. Thanks for these ideas!
@katieree331 - You don’t think [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] and [name_m]Maximus[/name_m] are too “in your face”? Hmmm. I don’t mind it too much, but like I said above, there’s already a lot of [name_m]Leos[/name_m]. And I’d literally be copying from the same cousins both [name_u]Max[/name_u] and [name_m]Leo[/name_m] if I did so.
@iamamiam - I like [name_m]Caius[/name_m] ([name_m]Ky[/name_m]-us right? or [name_u]Kay[/name_u]-us?), [name_m]Hadrian[/name_m], [name_u]Orion[/name_u], [name_m]Soren[/name_m] and [name_m]Valor[/name_m] but I’d need to double check meanings.
Thanks for the help!! I wish it were as easy as “yes, I like that! I will use it! Thanks” and done. But… its complicated. I feel like so many of my favorites are already in use in the family and I don’t want to steal/copy more than I already have!
Potential [name_f]Mini[/name_f] List:
[name_u]Oberon[/name_u] - [name_m]Noble[/name_m], Bearlike
[name_m]Conrad[/name_m] - Brave Counsel
[name_m]Leopold[/name_m] - Brave People
[name_m]Amadeus[/name_m] - [name_f]Love[/name_f] of God
[name_m]Azriel[/name_m] - God is my help
[name_m]Aurelius[/name_m] - [name_u]Golden[/name_u] One
[name_m]Cato[/name_m] - All-knowing
[name_m]Alaric[/name_m] - All Powerful Ruler
[name_m]Benedict[/name_m] - Blessed
[name_u]Constantine[/name_u] - [name_m]Constant[/name_m]
[name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] - [name_m]Son[/name_m] of encouragement
[name_m]Nicolai[/name_m] - [name_f]Victory[/name_f] of the people
[name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] - [name_m]Lion[/name_m]
[name_m]Thaddeus[/name_m] - Gift of God
[name_m]Marcellus[/name_m] - [name_m]Young[/name_m] Warrior
[name_m]Vincent[/name_m] - Conquering
[name_m]Caius[/name_m] - Rejoice
How might you pair these? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you see any good reasons to cross any of them off? Problems or issues that may arise? More suggestions are appreciated!
[name_m]Maximus[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] {and} [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] [name_m]Aurelius[/name_m] - golden son of encouragement
[name_m]Maximus[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] {and} [name_m]Leopold[/name_m] [name_u]Constantine[/name_u] - constantly brave people
[name_m]Maximus[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] {and} [name_u]Oberon[/name_u] [name_m]Benedict[/name_m] - noble, bearlike and blessed
[name_m]Maximus[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] {and} [name_m]Thaddeus[/name_m] [name_m]Nicolai[/name_m] - gift of God and victory of the people
[name_m]Maximus[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] {and} [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] [name_m]Marcellus[/name_m] - conquering young warrior
Have you considered the name [name_m]Victor[/name_m]? It translates directly into Spanish, it’s very masculine, and it has a great meaning.
One of my sons is [name_m]Conrad[/name_m] [name_m]Victor[/name_m]. We frequently call him [name_m]Rad[/name_m]. My other son is [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] [name_m]Victor[/name_m], whom we call Bash, but I see you already eliminated that option.
My personal opinion is [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] is too much with [name_m]Maximus[/name_m] (great name!), but [name_u]Max[/name_u] and [name_m]Leo[/name_m] are cute together.
