Lou

Berries,

My struggle with boy names continues. I have been all over the place and back again. Hubby and I’s current crush is [name]Louis[/name] nn [name]Lou[/name]. I’ll come right out and say it, I’m not a fan of [name]Louis[/name] in the least. But it is a family name of someone we’d love to honor, and I [name]ADORE[/name] the thought off nn [name]Lou[/name] or [name]Louie[/name].

Thoughts? Nameberry comments that [name]Lou[/name] could make a comeback on the girl’s side in the next few years. What do you think of that angle?

And for anyone who’s interested, what clenched the idea for me was the character of [name]Lou[/name] [name]Grant[/name] on the [name]Mary[/name] [name]Tyler[/name] [name]Moore[/name] show. [name]One[/name] of my absolute favorite TV characters of all time!

I actually feel that [name]Lou[/name] is a little feminine these days, especially with the popularity of [name]Luna[/name], [name]Tallulah[/name], and other “[name]Lulu[/name]” names.

I considered [name]Louise[/name]/[name]Louisa[/name]/[name]Eloise[/name] nn [name]Lou[/name] for my girl list.

I think [name]Louie[/name] is kind of cute, but it feels really insubstantial. Also, it sounds a bit like something you would sneeze out.

Any other options for honoring this particular person?

I love [name]Lou[/name] for a boy and girl just about equally, honestly. I think [name]Lou[/name] is so cool on a girl (much like [name]Leni[/name]–it’s striking and not terribly feminine, but a feminine girl could rock it). It’s simple, it’s sweet, and she could have a feminine full name to fall back on ([name]Louisa[/name], [name]Luella[/name], [name]Luna[/name], [name]Lucia[/name], etc.). But [name]Lou[/name] on a boy… it’s intelligent, it’s a bit on the soft side, it’s vintage, it’s informal, it’s down to earth. And [name]Louis[/name] sounds so smart and charming.

Honestly, I didn’t even give [name]Louis[/name] a second thought until [name]One[/name] Direction and [name]Louis[/name] [name]Tomlinson[/name] came along, but I love it now. And while [name]One[/name] Direction is still too teeny-bopper for me to consider them a serious name love, lol, it seems like he’s a pretty great guy so he’s given the name a good image for me. Have you given any thought to using the French pronunciation ([name]Louie[/name])? What is it you don’t like about [name]Louis[/name] that you love about [name]Lou[/name]/[name]Louie[/name]?

I really love [name]Lou[/name], boy or girl. [name]Louis[/name] is nice enough. The American pronunciation isn’t my fave but it’s the only one I could use with a straight face as a NYer! But personally I enjoy [name]Morgan[/name], [name]Kelly[/name], ect on boys and that’s not everyone’s cup of tea. [name]Louisa[/name], [name]Louise[/name] & Talulah are probably all on the rise but it wouldn’t stop me.

one option would be to use the louis spelling, but pronounce it louie? in my opinion that’s a perfectly normal way to pronounce louis, and arguably the more common pronunciation?

I know too many female [name]Lou[/name]'s to see this as Masculine. [name]Just[/name] call him [name]Louis[/name].

I don’t see any reason why you can’t use [name]Lou[/name] on a boy. It’s handsome and so unexpected. [name]Will[/name] the popularity of [name]Lou[/name]/[name]Lu[/name] names for girls somehow make your son less of a boy? Not in the least.
