Lovely names with terrible nicknames

I would totally love to use my great grandfathers name but unfortunately I think it’s unusable because it’s way to easy for kids to make fun of.

[name_m]Gaston[/name_m] - it would be gorgeous and romantic if it wasn’t so easy to get Gassy from it.

[name_f]Cornelia[/name_f]- again beautiful but who wants to be called [name_u]Corny[/name_u]?

[name_f]Dorcas[/name_f] - lovely biblical name but way too easy to get Dork.

Anyone else got any beautiful names rendered unusable because of the ugly nn’s?

This is the one thing holding me back from naming a child [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] one day; I love everything about it except for the possibility of the nickname “[name_u]Clem[/name_u]”…ughhh! [name_u]Clem[/name_u] sounds like loose folds of skin, not something a person should be called!

I would want people to call her [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] or [name_m]Lemon[/name_m], but the thought that someone might one day call her [name_u]Clem[/name_u] is enough to give me serious, serious pause about really using it.

Lol… Folds of skin. Yes that’s a strong possibility! Especially since it’s such a long name. People tend to use that first syllable.

Err… whispers I actually think [name_u]Clem[/name_u] is really sweet! But your description did make me giggle.

[name_f]Lavender[/name_f]: Lav or Lavvie
[name_f]Giselle[/name_f]: Jizz or Jizzy
[name_f]Bridget[/name_f]: [name_f]Biddy[/name_f] or [name_f]Birdie[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]: [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] or [name_f]Tillie[/name_f]

[name_m]Bartholomew[/name_m]: [name_m]Bart[/name_m] or [name_u]Barry[/name_u]
[name_u]Laurence[/name_u]: [name_m]Larry[/name_m]
[name_u]August[/name_u]: [name_u]Gus[/name_u]
[name_m]Mordecai[/name_m]: [name_m]Mordy[/name_m] or [name_u]Kai[/name_u]

There are other nicknames for all of these which I really like, but these ones are the most likely and I really dislike them!

I absolutely love the name [name_m]Joseph[/name_m], cannot abide the name [name_m]Joe[/name_m].
[name_m]Geoffrey[/name_m]: [name_m]Jeff[/name_m]
[name_u]August[/name_u]/[name_m]Augustus[/name_m]: [name_u]Gus[/name_u]
[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u]: [name_m]Larry[/name_m]
[name_f]Doris[/name_f]: [name_f]Dorry[/name_f]
[name_m]Reuben[/name_m]: [name_m]Rube[/name_m]
[name_f]Angelica[/name_f]: [name_u]Angie[/name_u]

[name_m]Anthony[/name_m]: [name_u]Tony[/name_u]
[name_m]Peter[/name_m]: [name_m]Pete[/name_m]
[name_m]David[/name_m]: [name_m]Dave[/name_m]
[name_m]Ambrose[/name_m]: [name_f]Amy[/name_f], [name_f]Amber[/name_f], [name_f]Rose[/name_f] (although it doesn’t really need a nickname)

[name_f]Martina[/name_f]: [name_u]Marty[/name_u]
[name_f]Corisande[/name_f]: [name_u]Cory[/name_u], [name_u]Sandy[/name_u], [name_u]Andy[/name_u]
[name_f]Illiana[/name_f]: Ill?
[name_f]Talitha[/name_f]: [name_u]Tally[/name_u]
[name_f]Viviana[/name_f]: [name_f]Vivi[/name_f]

[name_m]Richard[/name_m]/[name_m]Dick[/name_m]

I love the name [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] but passionately hate the nicknames [name_u]Val[/name_u] and [name_f]Tina[/name_f], which sound so dated.
[name_f]Violet[/name_f] nicknamed [name_f]Vi[/name_f] isn’t my cup of tea, but [name_f]Vivi[/name_f] is okay
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f] to [name_f]Kathy[/name_f] isn’t nice either, but I love [name_f]Kate[/name_f], and [name_f]Katy[/name_f] is sweet.
[name_u]Michael[/name_u] sounds nice as a full name, but I dont like [name_m]Mike[/name_m], [name_m]Mick[/name_m] or Mich.
It should also be made a crime to shorten [name_u]James[/name_u] to [name_m]Jim[/name_m].

I agree with some of you… [name_m]Larry[/name_m] is awful. I like [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] (little women)for [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] or just the full proper names is handsome.

I actually like [name_u]Gus[/name_u] for [name_u]August[/name_u] but I like Auggie more.

I agree [name_m]Joe[/name_m] and [name_m]Joseph[/name_m]. And jizz is unfortunate. Lol

I think the name [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] is quite lovely, the nickname [name_u]Daffy[/name_u], however, is not…

I agree with [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] and [name_m]Larry[/name_m]. I was pleased to read an article about unusual nicknames a while ago which brought up [name_u]Larkin[/name_u] as a nn for [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u].

[name_f]Clementine[/name_f] and [name_u]Clem[/name_u], although I do find [name_u]Clem[/name_u] very endearing and don’t hear “Clam” but it seems like my family and SO do
[name_f]Virginia[/name_f] and [name_f]Ginny[/name_f], most people love [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] but I reaaaally don’t like it, I wouldn’t know how to force people to call her [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] though
[name_f]Petra[/name_f] and [name_f]Pet[/name_f], just feels a bit weird
[name_f]Frances[/name_f] and [name_f]Franny[/name_f], just don’t like the nickname, but [name_f]Frances[/name_f] is such a beautiful name

[name_f]Bernadette[/name_f] “[name_u]Bernie[/name_u]” although there are other nns that aren’t as obvious but [name_u]Bernie[/name_u] makes me dislike the name.
[name_u]Bellamy[/name_u] for a boy there’s [name_u]Bell[/name_u], [name_f]Amy[/name_f], and [name_f]Ella[/name_f].
[name_m]Magnus[/name_m] has [name_f]Mags[/name_f] the best is Mang which isn’t tooo bad.
[name_m]Thaddeus[/name_m] I dislike [name_m]Tad[/name_m] and Thaddy so I would use a mn starting with Ne- to get [name_m]Thane[/name_m].

[name_m]Patrick[/name_m]-[name_u]Pat[/name_u], [name_u]Paddy[/name_u], and [name_m]Rick[/name_m] are awful. I like the sound of Patch, but not the spelling.

I tend to move names with nn I don’t like to the GP pile.

[name_m]Alistair[/name_m]/Alasdar: not a fan of [name_m]Al[/name_m]

[name_m]Dominic[/name_m]: not a fan of [name_u]Nic[/name_u]
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m]: [name_m]Ed[/name_m], [name_m]Eddie[/name_m], [name_m]Ned[/name_m], Ted
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m]: not a fan of [name_m]Fred[/name_m] or [name_u]Freddy[/name_u], love [name_m]Fritz[/name_m] though
[name_u]Michael[/name_u]: grew up with too many Mikes and Mikeys
[name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m]: dislike [name_m]Nathan[/name_m] (again, I think I heard too much)
[name_m]Nicholas[/name_m]: [name_u]Nick[/name_u], [name_u]Nicky[/name_u] (heard too much)
[name_m]Rafferty[/name_m]: [name_u]Rafe[/name_u] because it’s too close in appearance to rape
[name_m]Charles[/name_m]: [name_m]Chuck[/name_m], [name_m]Chuckie[/name_m]

[name_f]Therese[/name_f]/[name_f]Theresa[/name_f]: [name_m]Even[/name_m] though [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] (which I love) is a legitimate nn from it, I’ve only ever heard people use [name_u]Terry[/name_u]
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]: not a fan of [name_m]Haze[/name_m]
[name_f]Cassandra[/name_f]: not a fan of [name_f]Cassie[/name_f], [name_f]Sandra[/name_f], or [name_u]Sandy[/name_u]
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f]: I don’t love [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]/[name_f]Georgia[/name_f]/[name_f]Geneva[/name_f]: dislike [name_f]Gigi[/name_f], I don’t want my kid’s nickname being slang for the male anatomy
[name_u]Eloise[/name_u]/[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]/[name_f]Elena[/name_f]/[name_f]Eleni[/name_f]: I’ve heard of so many Ellies and Ellas
[name_f]Philippa[/name_f]: dislike [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] again for the slang thing; also Phili since I often go there I wouldn’t want the confusion
[name_f]Marjorie[/name_f]: dislike [name_f]Marj[/name_f], [name_f]Margie[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]/[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f]: not a fan of [name_f]Rosie[/name_f], [name_f]Rosa[/name_f]
[name_f]Victoria[/name_f]: [name_f]Vicky[/name_f], [name_f]Tory[/name_f]

If someone wants to make fun of you, it doesn’t matter if you have a common name or an obscure one. Go ahead and name your child something that you like.

My own name is in a popular song. I’ve been sung at, rhymed with, and addressed by not-so-flattering diminutive pet forms of my name. Its annoying for a whole few seconds and then I firmly tell people I don’t appreciate it and they stop.

Also, there is entirely the possibility that your child might actually like the nicknames that you listed. I know of people that go by names that I wouldn’t want to be called in a million years, but they wear them like a champ. There is also the possibility of your child earning a completely different nickname that is nowhere close to their actual name, i.e. Speedy because they run fast.

I actually really like the name [name_f]Pamela[/name_f], but I really dislike [name_f]Pam[/name_f]. [name_f]Pamela[/name_f] is a strong yet feminine name, but [name_f]Pam[/name_f] sounds harsh and outdated.

I love [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] & [name_f]Valeria[/name_f] but I don’t like [name_u]Val[/name_u] on it’s own.

I just noticed that both my and SO’s maternal grandmothers have basically nice names - [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] and [name_f]Barbara[/name_f] - which shorten to the most horrible german nicknames, Uschi and Bärbel. (prn [name_m]Ushi[/name_m] like Sushi and Bair-bell)
So much about family names, I guess.
