What are your thoughts on the name [name]Luciana[/name]?
I love the name [name]Lucy[/name] on its own but I think [name]Luciana[/name] gives it more substance. [name]Do[/name] you think it’s weird if I like this/name a future child this even though I’m not Italian.
I would use [name]Lucy[/name] as a nickname for [name]Luciana[/name] but should I spell it [name]Lucy[/name] or [name]Luci[/name] or [name]Lucie[/name]? I prefer [name]Lucy[/name] but will that get confusing with the “i” in her full name?
I love [name]Lucy[/name], and my preferred way of getting to it is [name]Lucille[/name] as it is my Grammy’s name, but [name]Luciana[/name] is lovely as well and a great way to get to [name]Lucy[/name]. I don’t think the i/y this is an issue. I think generally people will understand seeing as [name]Lucy[/name] is the traditional spelling of the name. As for not being Italian… who cares? If it is a name you love then go for it.
[name]Lucy[/name] is in my top three I’ve often wondered if [name]Lucy[/name] by itself is insubstantial and nicknamey, but I don’t like any of the longer versions better than [name]Lucy[/name].
I actually really like [name]Luciana[/name], but I do have pronunciation concerns. I really like the [name]Lu[/name]-see-ana pn, but the [name]Lu[/name]-chee-ana pn doesn’t sound good to me so that’d put me off.
I’ve never heard it pronounced [name]LU[/name]-CHEE-[name]AH[/name]-NA before. I always pronounced it [name]LU[/name]-SEE-[name]AH[/name]-NA. I think maybe it’s confused with [name]Lucia[/name] which is definitely pronounced [name]LU[/name]-CHA. But I like the soft sound which is why [name]Lucy[/name] as a nickname is perfect. [name]Do[/name] you think people would mispronounce it often?
I love [name]Luciana[/name] and if you do too use it! I don’t think it would be strange for someone who isn’t Italian to use the name. As for the spelling of the nickname, just go with [name]Lucy[/name] if that’s what you like.
I’ve never heard it pronounced “lucy-ah-na”, but [name]Florida[/name] has a lot of Italians from NY/NJ. Depending on where you live people may pronounce it the way you do.
The male name/ surname [name]Luciano[/name] is “lu-cha-no” but I have heard it mispronounced “lucy-ah-no”
I’ve never heard of anyone pronouncing [name]Lucia[/name] as “loo-cha”. “loo-CHEE-a” or “[name]LU[/name]-sha”, yes, but not “loo-cha”.
Personally, I don’t care for [name]Luciana[/name]. I’m not a big fan of frilly names, or -ana names, but I do love [name]Lucy[/name], which is what I go by probably 70% of the time, and [name]Lucia[/name], which is what I go by the rest of the time. I tend to use [name]LU[/name]-sha in my English-speaking world, and lu-THEE-a while I’ve been living in Spain & the Basque Country. But I have Italian friends who say lu-CHEE-a and I don’t mind that. I’m also game for lu-SEE-a, and [name]LU[/name]-see-ya.
I definitely don’t think you need to spell [name]Lucy[/name] as [name]Luci[/name] or [name]Lucie[/name] if the full name is [name]Luciana[/name]. I’m not a stickler what so ever about nicknames being a puzzle-piece to the full name (ie: [name]Rosemary[/name] nn [name]Molly[/name], [name]Isadora[/name] nn [name]Sadie[/name], [name]Evadne[/name] nn [name]Edie[/name], are all fine by me.) I like best as a spelling and find to to be the least confusing of the 3… plus, I pronounce [name]Lucie[/name] and [name]Lucy[/name] differently.
I would naturally pronounce it [name]Lu[/name]-cee-ah-na or [name]Lu[/name]-chee-ah-na. I would say the first pronunciation is more Spanish and the second is more Italian, so I wouldn’t call either a mispronunciation, just a difference in the way people of different ethnic groups say words.
I like the name and the nickname. I’d spell it [name]Lucy[/name] if you like it that way; it doesn’t bother me that [name]Luciana[/name] has no y.
Okay perhaps I misphrased it. If I WANT my child to go by [name]LU[/name]-SEE-[name]AH[/name]-NA and not the the [name]LU[/name]-CHEE-[name]AH[/name]-NA pronounciation, do you think I’d constantly be correcting people?
There’s plenty of names that get mispronounced or nicknames that people don’t like. I personally think if I reinforced that it was pronounced a certain way, hopefully it would catch on. Also, why would I name my child with an ethnic pronunciation if I wasn’t Italian or Spanish? I’m hoping when the time comes, the pronunciation is apparent.
I love [name]Luciana[/name]! I actually don’t even love [name]Lucy[/name], but I love [name]Luciana[/name]. I’m not Italian either, but I considered adding it to my list a few years ago. I figured since most would call her [name]Lucy[/name] (instead of the [name]Lulu[/name]/[name]Lou[/name] or [name]Annie[/name] that I would have preferred), and that I like [name]Liliana[/name] nn [name]Lily[/name] more, it didn’t stick, but I do really like it. loo-chee-[name]AH[/name]-nah is the Italian pronunciation–loo-see-[name]AH[/name]-nah would be the Spanish one. I think it could go either way. I think most people instinctively say loo-SEE-ah over loo-CHEE-ah (Spanish over Italian again), so they might opt for loo-see-ah-nah?
[name]Welcome[/name] to Nameberry, btw! I know @CALE2323 was posting for you on parentsconnect, it’s nice to see you here. (I’m @thelionandthebelle over there, btw.) Although when you replied over there you signed the one comment as [name]Deb[/name]? I’m a bit confused about that, since your siggy says you’re [name]Melanie[/name], but welcome, all the same, haha. I guess you changed your mind about [name]Phineas[/name] [name]Maxwell[/name], too, then, huh? [name]Bennett[/name] [name]Reed[/name] is just as amazing, though!
Hello! Thank you for your well wishes. Cale2323 showed me to these baby name boards and I’m new to all of this. Yes, I changed from [name]Phineas[/name] [name]Maxwell[/name]. I felt like the name didn’t fit at all with our other kids! [name]Trust[/name] me,I’ve been struggling naming this 5th baby! I’m all “named” out! My name is [name]Deb[/name] but I usually use [name]Melanie[/name] as a pseudoname since I don’t like giving out my real name on the internet. Since my friend already did on the other site, I guess the jig is up? Sorry for the confusion!
