Lately I’ve been crushing hard on [name]Lucy[/name]. She’s magical but familiar, historically established but not too common…I have yet to meet a [name]Lucy[/name]. I love the saucy sweetness of her sound, the way the L and the C just dance off the tongue. And there are so many fabulous [name]Lucy[/name] namesakes, like L.M. [name]Montgomery[/name], [name]William[/name] Wordsworth’s poetry collection, [name]Lucy[/name] Cavendish, etc. And of course, there is [name]Lucy[/name] Pevensie from the Chronicles of [name]Narnia[/name]…but two of the books also feature a [name]Prince[/name] [name]Caspian[/name] as a main character.
My concern is that [name]Caspian[/name] is one of the oh-so-very-few names in the world that my husband loves as much as I do. It’s pretty tied to the [name]Narnia[/name] books; the only other association is the [name]Caspian[/name] Sea, and I love it for both those reasons. [name]Lucy[/name], on the other hand, is a very well-known name that is frequently used outside of the series and isn’t as specifically tied to the books as say Tumnus or [name]Jadis[/name] or Aslan.
So the question is thus: Are [name]Caspian[/name] and [name]Lucy[/name] too much together in a sibset? Other potential siblings would be [name]Zion[/name], [name]Solomon[/name], [name]Alice[/name], and [name]Ophelia[/name]…does that help break up the [name]Narnia[/name]-ness?
My first thought was definitely [name]Narnia[/name]. However, if there were other siblings I would be less likely to make the connection. [name]Caspian[/name], [name]Alice[/name] and [name]Lucy[/name] sound great together and less [name]Narnia[/name] ish.
I wrote a rather long reply to you, and when I was almost done I went to get my tea, and when I came back my cat was lying on the laptop and all text deleted… so this is a less poetic version:
When I see them together I do think [name]Narnia[/name]. But they are very beautiful and magical, [name]Lucy[/name] is exactly what you want, shimmering silver laughter! I would have no issue with [name]Alice[/name] with these two, that would be three names from famous classic British children’s literature. [name]Ophelia[/name] too for that matter, it’s also classic British literature and has that magic feel to it. [name]Zion[/name] and [name]Solomon[/name] (in my opinion) would sound out of place. They’re so Biblical, dark and serious. I actually see these names divided into two groups:
Dark, serious, intense: [name]Zion[/name], [name]Solomon[/name] and [name]Ophelia[/name]
[name]Light[/name], fun, magical: [name]Caspian[/name], [name]Lucy[/name] and [name]Alice[/name]
However, they are all beautiful and with that magic flair, and not everyone over think these things.
I came in to say pretty much everything [name]Ottilie[/name] already said.
I definitely think [name]Narnia[/name] with [name]Caspian[/name] and [name]Lucy[/name]. An [name]Alice[/name] and even an [name]Ophelia[/name] in there would lead me to believe literature was important to the family. That’s not a bad thing. The only downside I really see is if you have a [name]Lucy[/name] and a [name]Caspian[/name], any other children wouldn’t be as tied together as the first two. [name]Lucy[/name] and [name]Caspian[/name] adventured together, it doesn’t get better than that. While other namesakes may have gone on their own adventures, [name]Lucy[/name] and [name]Caspian[/name] will always have the battle for [name]Narnia[/name] and the [name]Dawn[/name] Treader in common.
When I see [name]Caspian[/name], I immediately think of [name]Narnia[/name]. So when I see [name]Lucy[/name] too, I think “Woowhee. they must really love [name]Narnia[/name].” Now, the [name]Narnia[/name] books are some of my favorites of all time, so it’s not necessarily bad, but it’s certainly a little theme. I knew a family with a [name]Lucy[/name] and a [name]Peter[/name] and it still made me think of [name]Narnia[/name], even though they also had a few other kids with non-Narnian names.
I can see what you mean about that dark/light dichotomy…I think that’s part of my “brightshadow” aesthetic. I’ve always loved putting opposites together for that extra surprise of contrast and texture, whether I’m naming or designing or cooking For example [name]Solomon[/name] on his own seems very solemn and serious, but I feel like when paired with [name]Fable[/name], there’s an added dreamy, shimmering, ethereal quality that I’m just head over heels for. I feel the same way about [name]Ophelia[/name] [name]Fawn[/name].
[name]Zion[/name] is the exception…I’ve always had him as [name]Zion[/name] [name]Anthony[/name] or [name]Zion[/name] [name]Nathaniel[/name], and it’s only been in the last year or two that I’ve discovered this love of word names as middles, so he’s out of place at the moment. However, [name]Zion[/name] has always been and will always be THE name for my oldest son. The name sort of chose me and it was a very spiritual experience, so he’s set in stone. Maybe I just need to start a middle name thread for him and replace [name]Nathaniel[/name] with something lighter
Literature is extremely important in this family I definitely want my children to feel connected to that world, so I love names with a lot of depth and story.
As I mentioned to [name]Ottilie[/name], our set-in-stone name for our oldest son will be [name]Zion[/name]. Also, [name]Alice[/name] [name]Willow[/name] is our favorite girls’ name, so if we do have a [name]Caspian[/name] and a [name]Lucy[/name], there will likely already be a [name]Zion[/name] and an [name]Alice[/name] in the picture. Does that make it feel less [name]Narnia[/name]-crazy or is it still pretty unevenly balanced in that direction?
What about [name]Lucia[/name] (loo-SEE-ah, not LOO-sha) nn [name]Lucy[/name]? Does that even things out at all? I’m more drawn to [name]Lucy[/name], because I love the combo [name]Lucy[/name] [name]Morwenna[/name], and [name]Lucia[/name] [name]Morwenna[/name] doesn’t have the same flow. But as this is all very hypothetical at this point, I’m still really open to ideas
I love [name]Lucia[/name], but only the way you pronounced it. Loosha just really feels like a missed opportunity. [name]Lucy[/name] is my favorite girl’s name, so I prefer it, but I’m attracted to [name]Lucia[/name] as well for sure. But, using [name]Lucia[/name] instead of [name]Lucy[/name] when you REALLY love [name]Lucy[/name] would be sad. I do think that having a few other kids does sort of soften the blow, particularly [name]Zion[/name], but any time I see [name]Caspian[/name] I think [name]Narnia[/name], so adding [name]Lucy[/name] doesn’t really make it any worse. [name]Alice[/name], [name]Lucy[/name], and [name]Caspian[/name] would be a little [name]Oxford[/name] fantasy club. You just need a Curdie and a Legolas. I’m just kidding. I love all those names too.
[name]Just[/name] seeing the title of your post, the first thing that came to mind was “that sounds like [name]Narnia[/name],” so, yes, I do think they will often make others think of [name]Narnia[/name]. It’s not a bad association by any means, but if you want to make it less obvious, I think adding other (non-[name]Narnia[/name]) names to the sibset would help.
On that topic, I love how [name]Alice[/name] and [name]Lucy[/name] sound together. My oldest daughter is named [name]Alice[/name] and my youngest is [name]Lucy[/name] so I’m definitely a fan. I like names that have strong literary ties as well.
Oh, and I wouldn’t compromise on [name]Lucy[/name]. If you like [name]Lucy[/name] and not the other longer forms, definitely use [name]Lucy[/name].
I am not familiar with [name]Narnia[/name] but I think [name]Lucy[/name] and [name]Caspian[/name] are great together. I am not one who thinks siblings need to coordinate in some fantastical way.
I actually know a sib set that includes a [name]Lu[/name].cy and a Cyp.rian. That’s pretty similar. The other two kids are Feli.city and [name]Cecil[/name].ia, just for reference. It’s a very Catholic family, in case you couldn’t tell.
I totally agree with the light/dark thing, Sessh, I do it too! I like [name]Zion[/name], and I know the dream you had was very powerful and I understand why you need to use it. We just need to find a perfect little combo! What do you have in mind for [name]Lucy[/name] and [name]Caspian[/name]? I’ll throw some suggestions out here that I think will go nicely with [name]Alice[/name] [name]Willow[/name], [name]Solomon[/name] [name]Fable[/name] & [name]Ophelia[/name] [name]Fawn[/name].
From your list, I like [name]Zion[/name] [name]Sparrow[/name], [name]Zion[/name] Swift, [name]Zion[/name] Remiel and [name]Zion[/name] [name]Timothy[/name]. Also [name]Zion[/name] Leveret (baby hare), [name]Zion[/name] [name]Zephyr[/name] (if you’re up for some alliteration)
sparrow – I do love [name]Lucia[/name], but I would hate to have it mispronounced. And [name]Lucy[/name] just has this vivacity to it, whereas [name]Lucia[/name] seems more reserved.
tristan – Thanks! I love [name]Alice[/name] and [name]Lucy[/name] together, I think they were made to be sisters
missusaytch – I’m glad you like the sound of them together!
otter – you know, the more I think about it, the more I think I do need a better [name]Zion[/name] combo! I really am going to have to start another thread to that effect. [name]Zion[/name] [name]Sparrow[/name] and [name]Zion[/name] Remiel are darling, but the feeling I get from [name]Zion[/name] is more rugged than either of these. For [name]Caspian[/name] my top two are [name]Caspian[/name] [name]North[/name] and [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Frost[/name], but Husband hasn’t weighed in yet so I don’t want to get too attached…and for [name]Lucy[/name] my current crush is [name]Lucy[/name] [name]Morwenna[/name] ([name]LOVE[/name] [name]Lucy[/name] Vivendel, so unbelievably full of life and golden light, but Hubs has vetoed [name]Viv[/name])
[name]Lucy[/name] [name]Morwenna[/name]! and I’m drooling… That’s simply gorgeous Sessh! Start a [name]Zion[/name] thread, I’m sure you’ll get better suggestions from someone less stupid than me.
Otter! Tsk, tsk. In no way are you stupid, my dear. In fact, I shall take a page out of your book and try out some imagery [name]Zion[/name] won’t be the odd one out for long!
As others have said, [name]Lucy[/name] and [name]Caspian[/name] will likely make people think of [name]Narnia[/name]… but [name]Caspian[/name] alone will probably do the trick. I don’t really think it’s too much. [name]Don[/name]'t even think about settling for [name]Lucia[/name] if [name]Lucy[/name] is what you love! And I think having children with unrelated names first will certainly soften the effect
And now I offer up my super secret GP combo… [name]Zion[/name] [name]Vale[/name].
I like [name]Caspian[/name] and [name]Lucy[/name]! Next best is [name]Caspian[/name] and [name]Lucia[/name]! I’m not a fan of [name]Narnia[/name] so of course I did not think of [name]Narnia[/name].
Since you think It’s too [name]Narnia[/name]-ish wdyt of [name]Caspian[/name] and [name]Lucille[/name] (nn [name]Lucy[/name])? Or [name]Lucienne[/name]? Lucianne?
I love [name]Lucy[/name] too but if she was a sister to [name]Caspian[/name] her name would probably be [name]Lucinda[/name] or some exotic style name with a [name]Lucy[/name] feel to it like [name]Lucia[/name].
This thread caught my eye as I have a [name]Caspian[/name] and a [name]Lucinda[/name] (nn [name]Lulu[/name], sometimes [name]Lucy[/name]). I had the same [name]Narnia[/name] concern (especially with the movies re-popularizing the series), but it ended up being fine. I love both names, and think the literary reference is a bonus
