I am having the worst time finding a name that my husband likes, so please excuse all the posts. After saying he was okay with [name_f]Minna[/name_f], he ultimately decided he doesn’t like it. He does really like [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] problem is that I’m not sure [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] goes well with [name_u]Scout[/name_u] (our daughter). I think [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] is a very sweet nn for [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] or even on its own. [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] is Swahili for "precious pearl " ( we oddly enough have lovely Swahili neighbors) and was in the top 100 in the US during the 1800’s. [name_f]My[/name_f] high school art teacher had a daughter named [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] that had zero problems with it. SO, [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] or just [name_f]Lulu[/name_f]?
One of my daughters is [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], I call her lulu… I love the name! It suits her perfectly. She’s a spitfire. Go for it, lulu is great for a given name:)
I think [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] is a cute name, but why sacrifice a formal version that she could use (or not) her whole life just for sake of more closely matching style with a sibling she will probably only live with during childhood?
By all means call her [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] 100% of the time, but put [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] (or [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f], [name_f]Luella[/name_f], [name_f]Louisa[/name_f]) on the birth certificate. As someone with a short form on my birth certificate, I wish my parents had decided to give me the option of a more formal name, too.
I think [name_f]Lulu[/name_f]'s a great nickname. [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] is sweet. It also works well as a full first name depending on your own preferences and how you think your child would feel growing up with the name.
[name_f]My[/name_f] daughter is a [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] and while she chooses not to go by it at school, she loves being called it at home. [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] has absolutely no relation to her given name (which doesn’t even contain a L). I’d probably use [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] as a formal name. That way a child has more options.
One of my close relatives is about to use [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] on their baby-to-be. The (silent) reaction of the whole family: wishing they’d give her a full name and save [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] for the nickname. I’m not opposed to NNs as givens - I have one myself - but [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] feels insubstantial. I’d feel weird calling an adult I didn’t know well something as familiar as [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] - compared to less affectionate-sounding NNs like [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] or [name_f]Betty[/name_f]. Plus [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] is gorgeous, so you get 2 for one - sophisticated [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] and cute, spunky [name_f]Lulu[/name_f]. [name_m]Just[/name_m] my opinion though - she could, of course, grow up to love it.
[name_f]My[/name_f] nieces name is Lexxi and we call her [name_f]Lulu[/name_f]. I dont like it as a given name. Because there are jobs that would turn her down for her name.
I don’t like [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] as a given name. I definitely prefer [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] “[name_f]Lulu[/name_f]”.
If you love [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] go for it as a first name
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] doesn’t fit well with [name_u]Scout[/name_u], but I could see it “working” with the nn [name_f]Lulu[/name_f].
People name their daughter [name_f]Lola[/name_f], [name_f]Lyla[/name_f], [name_f]Isla[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_f]Lula[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Ava[/name_f], [name_f]Ida[/name_f], [name_f]Evie[/name_f], [name_f]Zoe[/name_f], [name_f]Zara[/name_f] etc and consider them fine suitable names for a baby and an adult. Some of those can arguably be “nicknames.”
It’s a style of name that not everyone is going to agree on. I myself have an [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]. She has the choice of [name_f]Elle[/name_f] to be more professional later on. I disliked all “full names” for [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]. [name_f]Ella[/name_f] clashed with some of my other favorites for a future baby. Like my [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] has an option of [name_u]Lou[/name_u] once she gets older.
Go with what you love, only of course if your husband agrees. I love the meaning behind [name_f]Lulu[/name_f].
Honestly, with [name_u]Scout[/name_u] I much prefer [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] over [name_f]Eloise[/name_f].
[name_f]Minna[/name_f] would have been perfect, [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] is a sweet second choice.
You’re going to give her a middle name, right? If she doesn’t like [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] she can go by her middle name, [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] as a formal alternativ is unnecessary [name_f]IMO[/name_f]
[name_f]Lulu[/name_f] reminds me of the sweet film ‘Waitress’ with [name_f]Keri[/name_f] [name_m]Russell[/name_m] (from 2007). It’s one of my favourite feel-good films, [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] only appears at the very end, but when she does it always makes me very happy ^^
I say go for [name_f]Lulu[/name_f]!
I think [name_u]Scout[/name_u] and [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] are lovely!
I think [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] sounds very sweet with [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] and goes really nicely with [name_u]Scout[/name_u].
I also think Ee-lo (sort of like [name_f]Lilo[/name_f] from [name_f]Lilo[/name_f] and Stich) could be another cute nn to accompany [name_u]Scout[/name_u] on their adventures.
I’d probably use [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] as a formal name over [name_f]Lulu[/name_f]. It might be because I’ve spent some time in Tanzania and [name_u]Kenya[/name_u] and most [name_f]Lulu[/name_f]’s there were really Lulunga’s or something with nn [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] but regardless here or there it feels like a nn to me. Also as a [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] I loved having lots of nn options - it really allowed me to find my own name that I thought fit me best at any given time.
This is one of the rare times, I like the full name option. I can’t imagine an adult [name_f]Lulu[/name_f]. I do love it, but it’s rather cutesy.
I’d say [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] as a full name, [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] as a nickname.
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] could go by [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] her entire life or change her nickname to [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], just go by her full name, etc.
If you love both names, go with the one that gives the bearer more choices as she might want to have some options when she gets older without having to use a whole new name.
[name_f]Lulu[/name_f]! Big fan of nickname as given name.
[name_f]My[/name_f] husband if officially on board with [name_f]Lulu[/name_f], so I am feeling some relief. I don’t see a difference between [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] and [name_f]Lola[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f] or [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] as a given name. They are all vintage beauties.
I think [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] is cute and fits well with [name_u]Scout[/name_u], but I like [name_f]Lula[/name_f] better.
[name_f]My[/name_f] younger sister goes by [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] among family and friends, but very much prefers to use her full name (which is [name_u]Lindsey[/name_u]) in professional and academic settings. She is studying international law. I don’t necessarily mean to say if her full name were [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] that she would have any issue with persuing a career in law, but only that in my experience, my sister enjoys having the ability to use her full name.
That said, I love [name_f]Lulu[/name_f]. I love my sister so that may be part of it but I also just love the sound of double L names: [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Lola[/name_f], [name_f]Lulu[/name_f], [name_f]Lula[/name_f], and [name_f]Luella[/name_f]. And if I had an attachment to the name, I wouldn’t let its “nickname” aspect bug me at all. To each his(or her) own!
Oops! I just saw your second comment. If your husband is on board and you both love it, congratulations!!! I love [name_f]Lulu[/name_f]'s vintage aspect and I am actually naming my girl due in [name_f]October[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f].
The adventures of [name_u]Scout[/name_u] and [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] sound perfect.
[name_f]My[/name_f] sister goes by [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] in our family, but it has no relation to her given name, and no one else calls her that. I think it’s a great nickname that can be sweet, spunky, old-fashioned, or trendy. However, I think it should stay a nickname, and it would be adorable with [name_f]Eloise[/name_f].
