[name]Hi[/name] there, I’m new to nameberry and after looking around at the amazing taste in names you guys on here have, i’m looking for some name ideas for baby number 2 (due in march).
We (I’m [name]Beatrix[/name] by the way and my husband is [name]Alex[/name]) have a daughter, [name]Luna[/name] [name]Florence[/name] [name]Amelia[/name] who is three.
I’m really feeling the pressure of naming our second, it feels as though what we pick will really set the tone for any subsequent children if that makes sense? Like avoiding any kind of theme etc. I’m looking for a name that is beautiful, easy, happy but has substance and is classic but not boring. Something summery and bright seeing as he/she will be born at the end of summer.
So basically i’m i’m confused and in need of ideas and looking for input from naming pros.
Here is our boys list so far:
[name]Felix[/name] - It’s just so happy and classic and everything i think we are looking for in a name. Does it go with [name]Luna[/name]?
[name]Leo[/name] - We love this so much. Possibly short for [name]Leander[/name]. But then both will have names starting with L. I think i’m okay with this but if we had a third would he/she feel left out if they didn’t have an L name. And would three L names would be too much. (As you can see i’ve been stressing/over-worrying a lot!)
[name]Silas[/name] - This is a no-go but i’ve included it just because i love it.
[name]Arthur[/name] - Might be to stuffy compared to the other names we like. Also a lack of nicknames. I work as a curator in an art gallery so naming my child [name]Art[/name] might look a bit pretentious.
[name]Rory[/name] - Maybe I’ve been watching too much [name]Doctor[/name] Who but I love it. Sadly my mother does not as it was the name she would have has if she was a boy. For some reason she has always resented it.
[name]Cosimo[/name] - Yeah… my husband is not sure. I think it’s great though.
And that’s all we have. Any comments or suggestions would be great.
Thanks
Ooh these are wonderful! I think [name]Felix[/name] is such a cheery yet substantial name. It would be perfect with [name]Luna[/name], and I like that it shares an X with you and your husband’s names. [name]Leo[/name] is a little more common, but it has a great sound, and the lion image, and the summer zodiac sign! I’d definitely go with the unusual, gentlemanly [name]Leander[/name] and use [name]Leo[/name] as a nick. [name]Arthur[/name] has such soft sounds, but strong, knightly associations. It’s wonderful, but yes, not as playful as [name]Luna[/name]. If you feel sheepish about the [name]Art[/name] connection, you should probably pay attention to that feeling. [name]Rory[/name] is not my style, and it sounds like it’s off the table. [name]Silas[/name] is a cool smart farmer boy name but it’s out too… [name]Cosimo[/name]! I understand the appeal, and the sound is beautiful. [name]Do[/name] you have some Italian ancestry? I think it might be a bit strongly Italian if not. Also, the Medici thing. I mean, if you’re worried about being perceived as pretentious by the art world… something to consider. Though [name]Cosimo[/name] has the possible nn [name]Cosmo[/name], which would really tie in with [name]Luna[/name]!
As I read your post, I immediately thought of [name]Felix[/name], then saw it was already on your list! Would you consider [name]Felix[/name] with [name]Leander[/name] as a middle name? Another name I thought might suit you is [name]August[/name]. I love it: to me it sounds gentle and wise and strong and summery, and you have nicknames [name]Augie[/name] and [name]Gus[/name]. Another name you may want to consider is [name]Rupert[/name]. It’s similar in style to [name]Arthur[/name] but the nn Roo is very un-stuffy! All of these I think would sound lovely with [name]Luna[/name], which is beautiful by the way!
I do think [name]Felix[/name] is beautiful and perfect with [name]Luna[/name]. I was just a little concerned about choosing the first name that came into our minds and thought we should see if there were any other names we loved.
[name]Leander[/name] would be a contender for a middle, I do love it with [name]Leo[/name] as a nickname. But it’s also lovely on its own with a nice (if not tragic) myth behind it.
I agree about [name]Cosimo[/name] and the Medici association, I’m not afraid to reference art as it is what i’m passionate about. We used [name]Florence[/name] to reference the Renaissance and I think that’s subtle enough without going overboard. But I just don’t want it to scream art, like [name]Monet[/name] etc. I don’t think my husband will go for [name]Cosimo[/name] anyway. And we have absolutely no Italian ancestry! I’m English with Scottish ancestry and my husband is Australian with French and Irish ancestry.
I do like [name]August[/name]. It doesn’t seem as austere as [name]Augustus[/name] but still has a similar strength. I like Roo/[name]Rue[/name] but I don’t think i could get past [name]Rupert[/name] the [name]Bear[/name].
I love [name]Felix[/name] with [name]Luna[/name], it’s a good match. And I love [name]Leander[/name] too! I wouldn’t worry too much about two names starting with a L. As long as the name fits in, I think it’s ok ([name]Jude[/name] [name]Law[/name]'s kids are [name]Rafferty[/name], [name]Iris[/name] & [name]Rudy[/name]).
I had a huge [name]Luna[/name] phase a few years ago, and I wanted it together with [name]Indigo[/name], [name]Nero[/name] & [name]Stella[/name]. But those might not be quite your style.
[name]Luna[/name] and [name]Felix[/name] are wonderful together! That would be my top choice from your list.
I also love [name]Leo[/name] but to me [name]Luna[/name] and [name]Leo[/name] sound funny as a sister and brother. I love the sound of [name]Luna[/name] and [name]Leander[/name] much better.
I love [name]Felix[/name], [name]Silas[/name] and [name]Leo[/name] ( of course!) Someone said [name]Leo[/name] is common, and maybe on here it is-- but in real life even though it’s being used more ( I know 2 other baby [name]Leo[/name]'s other than mine) it’s still not popular or overused. [name]Luna[/name] and [name]Leo[/name] are cute!
[name]Arthur[/name] & [name]Silas[/name] goes best with [name]Luna[/name], I think, but I love [name]Leo[/name]. I really think [name]Arthur[/name] & [name]Luna[/name] sound really good together, as long as the [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] association doesn’t bother you.
I really love [name]Leander[/name] nn [name]Leo[/name], that is such a cute idea that I’ve never thought of before, though I do understand your concern about using two L names. The nn [name]Art[/name] seems like a cute option because of your job, though I’m not sure [name]Arthur[/name] matches very well with [name]Luna[/name].
I also like [name]Felix[/name] a lot but (in case you aren’t a fan or hadn’t thought of this) it might start to seem like you have a [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] naming theme going on. [name]Luna[/name] Lovegood is a character who has a larger part in the story as the series progresses and [name]Felix[/name] Felicis is the name of a golden potion that awards the drinker with good luck. Not by any means a bad association, but maybe something to think about.
My suggestion would be something like [name]Rowan[/name] or Roran perhaps with nn [name]Rory[/name]. Good luck! =]
You said you were looking for: “a name that is beautiful, easy, happy but has substance and is classic but not boring. Something summery and bright seeing as he/she will be born at the end of summer.”
I would describe [name]Felix[/name] as spunky, happy-go-lucky, classic, yet not at all borning. So to me [name]Felix[/name] definitely fulfills all these requirements! [name]Luna[/name] and [name]Felix[/name] makes a perfect sibset.
As a [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] fan I really don’t think of [name]Felix[/name] as a [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] name at all. It’s fairly obscure and I don’t think many would make that connection.
I had no idea [name]Felix[/name] was in HP and I remembered [name]Luna[/name] was only vaguely. Not the biggest fan here but not everyone is : D. Also, SO Many Names are used in those books…if you tried to avoid them all it might get ridiculous. I might avoid a set of [name]Harry[/name] and [name]Hermione[/name], but I think much beyond that you’re fine. If I ever have a boy and a girl there’s a good chance they’ll be [name]James[/name] and [name]Lily[/name], and I’m pretty sure that’s [name]Harry[/name]'s parents, right? But I don’t think people will latch on to that too much. [name]Felix[/name] and [name]Luna[/name] are great together!
My favorite from your list, with [name]Luna[/name], is [name]Silas[/name]. Too bad its a no go!
I do like [name]Felix[/name], but it might bother me that [name]Luna[/name] does not have X in her name…esp since the X is the last letter in all 3 names.
other ideas:
[name]Luna[/name] and [name]Fergus[/name]
[name]Luna[/name] and [name]Piers[/name]
[name]Luna[/name] and [name]Webster[/name]
[name]Luna[/name] and [name]Arlo[/name]
[name]Luna[/name] and [name]Enzo[/name]
Oh [name]Felix[/name] is my favorite from your list and I agree any [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] association is limited. [name]How[/name] many people are really going to think of the potion that really got most of its page count in one short chapter in one book? I think [name]Felix[/name] and [name]Luna[/name] make a gorgeous sibset.
I’m very sad that [name]Silas[/name] is a no-go, it would have been my favourite to go with sister [name]Luna[/name].
I really like [name]Arthur[/name], very cute and handsome.
[name]Leo[/name] and [name]Rory[/name] are nice enough but don’t match up to the beauty of [name]Luna[/name]'s name.
Not keen on [name]Cosimo[/name] at all. I’ve never really liked the name [name]Felix[/name] but I think it will rise in popularity here in the UK. I see it as similar to [name]Dexter[/name], which is pretty trendy here right now. I much prefer [name]Dexter[/name] to [name]Felix[/name], have you considered it - [name]Luna[/name] & [name]Dexter[/name]?
I should just state that the reason I can’t use [name]Silas[/name] is that my sister in law used it for her beautiful four month old boy! So although its not the name for my baby, I still get to enjoy it
I think [name]Felix[/name] is basically our boy version of [name]Luna[/name]. The name that was just natural, came from nowhere and just feels right. I do think they go together really well.
I didn’t even get the [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] reference straight away - and I have read all of the books! It doesn’t bother me at all. Like someone suggested so many names are used in those books and you can’t avoid them all. [name]Harry[/name], [name]Ron[/name] and [name]Hermione[/name] might look a little obvious but [name]Luna[/name] and [name]Felix[/name] should be fine. Also [name]Felix[/name] is used in it’s original latin context rather than being a character.
Haha perhaps I am just too much of a [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] nerd…
But just to clarify, I really really do like the name [name]Felix[/name], and I like it in conjunction with [name]Luna[/name]! I was simply pointing out the connection that I noticed, though apparently it isn’t as obvious as I imagined it to be, even amongst fans. I do agree with you that it isn’t referencing a character so it isn’t a blatant association. (Personally it makes me like your sibset even more, but this is coming from someone who plans to purposefully use a HP middle name theme for my children.) [name]Felix[/name] is a great name with a great meaning.
Have you thought of any middle names yet? [name]Felix[/name] [name]Leander[/name] seems like a very handsome start. =]
Oh I love the suggestion of [name]Felix[/name] [name]Leander[/name]. It’s so handsome and…streamlined (is that the word I want?) together it looks just lovely.
I agree that [name]Felix[/name] is great with [name]Luna[/name]. However, I love [name]Rory[/name]! I read a book with a male [name]Rory[/name] and have loved it ever since. It isn’t as distinctive as [name]Felix[/name], but I find it happier.
I like [name]Leo[/name] and [name]Felix[/name] for you. They both are lovely names and would fit well with [name]Luna[/name].
I agree that [name]Leo[/name] might make you feel like you had to go with L’s in the future, but it is a better match with [name]Luna[/name].
[name]Felix[/name] is a better match with all the names in your family I think, but I wonder if [name]Luna[/name] would feel left out that everyone else has an e and x in their name?
What about [name]Milo[/name] or [name]Titus[/name]?
