Is such a pretty name! But I’ve found various pronunciations…is it Loo-thee-en 3 syllables (which it how I pronounce it in my head) or Loo-theen 2 syllables? Tinuviel seems to be pronounced [name_m]Tin[/name_m]-oo-vee-el…is that right?
I love the story of Luthien and Beren and how Tolkien came to write it. I guess I’m excited about the new Hobbit film
Bump! Does nobody speak elvish?
Hello, fellow Tolkien geek!! I’ve always pronounced Luthien the three syllable way, and Tinuviel pretty much like you posted but maybe more “uhl” rather than “ehl”? tin-OO-vee-uhl. Not that a slight difference on the last syllable makes a huge difference though (and I have no clue which is more correct…it is spelled -el). I think it’s an absolutely beautiful name as well even though I’m not sure I’d ever be brave enough to use it. But I love Tolkien so much it might just happen in the middle spot! Other Tolkien GP’s of mine include Elanor (love this one SOOOO much-i wish it didn’t look like a misspelling of Eleanor), Eowyn, Primrose, Miriel, Elenna, Varda, Faramir, Bard, Beren, Peregrine, the list goes on…
Thanks for the reply Sarahdoodle I was beginning to think I was on my own in my Tolkien love I was looking at the new movie characters and found that they have introduced ‘Turiel’ a female character not in the novel! Which got me researching other female characters. I like this article http://mathom.hubpages.com/hub/middle-earth-female-characters-tolkien . I must admit I have only read The Hobbit but I’m a fan of the movies of LOTR …I really should read more but children get in the way!
I am excited that you pronounce Luthien with 3 syllables I prefer it that way I’m not sure I could persuade hubby to use Luthien or Tinuviel but I’m also loving [name_f]Elanor[/name_f], [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f], [name_f]Yavanna[/name_f] and Miriel…that’s new one to me. Miriel…umm that one might make the list! It’s part [name_u]Ariel[/name_u], part [name_f]Mirabel[/name_f]…I like it! Thank you.
It reminds me of [name_f]Lucienne[/name_f] ([name_u]Lou[/name_u].SYENn)
If I wouldn’t know the correct pronunciation I’d say Loo-thien and Tee-noo-viel (vyel) / Tee-noo-veel.
Thanks for that link ani77! I loved the article (so many good characters with good names I’d forgotten about or not heard of before!) and it made me want to use [name_f]Elanor[/name_f] even more! Haha. I’m a big fan of the LOTR movies too (extended edition, please! ) but the books are my first love and to me, still the best—I’ve actually read them three times…yeah…my obsession’s that bad. (That being said I’m also not married and won’t be for a solid five years to come at least, so I have no kids to take care of and much more available time to read!
)
Thanks for the replies
Sarahdoodle I have the extended version of the movies! They are the best. I really need to read more of Tolkien. I love good literature. I marvel at a mind so deep it can create stories with their own language. I definitely should read LOTR and Silmarillion. You’ve read it three times!!!..I’m impressed. Nothing wrong with an obsession like that.
You should definitely keep [name_f]Elanor[/name_f] on your list - it means so much to you and it’s a great name. I’m still rolling Miriel around in my mind. It’s my new name crush…thank you. Have a great [name_u]Christmas[/name_u]
