Lux as a nn for Alexandra?

I was talking to my sister yesterday about the name [name]Lux[/name]. I think it has a cool, edgy sound to it, but my problem was finding a more substantial name to fall back on. So what about [name]Alexandra[/name]? Is that too much of a stretch or does it make sense?

[name]How[/name] are you saying [name]Lux[/name]? I say it like “looks” which doesn’t really fit into/from [name]Alexandra[/name]?

If you’re saying it Lucks, then I think it can work. It feels like a big stretch.

Lol, how else could [name]Lux[/name] be pronounced other than ‘lucks’?

I want to say no BUT [name]Alexandra[/name] makes me think of [name]Alexandria[/name] which makes me think of [name]Egypt[/name] which makes me think of Luxor… So there does seem to be a tenuous link between the two. I’d prefer [name]Lex[/name] but I suppose [name]Lux[/name] could work if using the above connection.

lol, since most sources cite the Latin meaning, I guess I was silly to consider the Latin pronunciation? like this

Sounds a bit like “lukes” or sometimes “looks” which more clearly traces the descent of the [name]Luke[/name]-names, [name]Luke[/name]/[name]Lucas[/name]/[name]Lucien[/name] or [name]Lucy[/name]/[name]Lucia[/name]/[name]Lucienne[/name] etc.

[name]Lux[/name] said like “lucks” just sounds like the slang for “Luxury” and thus takes it very downmarket to me.

I adore [name]Lux[/name] and as a name I’ve only ever heard it pronounced “lucks” so I absoultely think that would work as a nn for [name]Alexandra[/name] to the same effect as [name]Lex[/name].
Very cute idea! =]

I absolutely adore [name]Lux[/name]! There was recently a character with this name on a CW series called ‘Life Unexpected’ and as her name, I’ve only ever heard it pronounced “lucks” so I absoultely think that would work as a nn for [name]Alexandra[/name]. It seems like it might be a bit more of a stretch if you were going to name her [name]Alexandria[/name] with an extra syllable, but to me it basically gives the same effect as using the nn [name]Lex[/name].
Very cute idea! =]

I think it’s a bit of a stretch, but not much, what about [name]Lex[/name] instead?

I love the nn [name]Lex[/name], but my sister feels very differently. If I ever had a daughter and named her [name]Alexandra[/name], I probably would use the nn [name]Lex[/name], but I thought [name]Lux[/name] could be an interesting option too. Thanks for your opinions, everyone!

I pronounced it “lucks” for those of you who are unsure.

I am an [name]Alexandra[/name], and I feel like it’s a pretty big stretch. But then again, [name]Sasha[/name] feels like a stretch too even though it’s an accepted nn, particularly among my Russian relatives.

I know a family who just named their baby girl Aluxandria. I believe they did this for the sole purpose of being able to call her [name]Lux[/name].

I don’t like it. If you want to call her [name]Lux[/name], just name her [name]Lux[/name]! [name]Alexandra[/name] and [name]Lux[/name] are two completely different names and should be treated as such. If you want to incorporate both names into your daughter’s name, what about [name]Alexandra[/name] [name]Lux[/name] or [name]Lux[/name] [name]Alexandria[/name]? The names are so different that it doesn’t sound repetitive or like you couldn’t decide between two names ([name]Evelyn[/name] [name]Ellen[/name] for example).

[name]Don[/name]'t do this I think this is going one step too far. [name]Alexandra[/name] is a gorgeous, gorgeous name one of the best and if you want to use [name]Lux[/name] as a nn go for it but don’t butcher [name]Alexandra[/name] please.

rollo

I really like this idea; I think it’s a cute and refreshing way to use two names that you may like but that are too similar to use in a sibset.

sbrad, are you in the Seattle area??? Because I know a family who have an Aluxandria [name_m]Cross[/name_m]….and they call her [name_f]Lux[/name_f]. Small world? Or coincidence?
