Lately I have been thinking about the name [name_m]Lyall[/name_m], I think it’s such a sweet/gentle name! The only hold up is that it feels a bit old, and right in the grey area of sweet/cool vintage name and outdated.
What do you all think about [name_m]Lyall[/name_m]?
what kind of imagery does it invoke?
would you use it as a first or middle name?
what kind of combos would you make (or what kind of style would you gravitate to?)?
[name_m]Lyall[/name_m] has a sharp but sweet and cosy feel, sort of ‘old-man’ vibes but with sleek sounds (a bit like Clyde). I think the fact it shares sounds/features with names like [name_m]Silas[/name_m], [name_u]Miles[/name_u], [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m], [name_u]Loyal[/name_u], [name_u]Royal[/name_u], [name_u]Kyle[/name_u], [name_u]Leo[/name_u], [name_u]Elijah[/name_u], [name_u]Elias[/name_u], [name_u]Will[/name_u], [name_m]Russell[/name_m] etc that it doesn’t feel too dated.
[name_m]Lyall[/name_m] gives me imagery of old libraries, neutral, earthy shades of brown, cream, green and orange, science experiments but also wolves (I think my brain is going to Lowell)
Personally, I’d use it as a middle, as I like other names with that strong EYE sound more, but I’d be pleased to see it as a first
Some combos I’d make using [name_m]Lyall[/name_m]:
Well, [name_m]Lyall[/name_m] has flown under my radar. I thought it would be a spelling variation of [name_u]Lyle[/name_u]. Other sites list it as coming from a Scottish surname meaning ‘wolf’ which is cool. @Greyblue maybe this explains your wolfy vibes!
Anyway, I really like [name_m]Lyall[/name_m], I think it would works so well as a middle name for a variety of firsts, e.g.
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_m]Lyall[/name_m]
[name_m]Kaleb[/name_m] [name_m]Lyall[/name_m]
[name_m]Lucas[/name_m] [name_m]Lyall[/name_m]
[name_m]Evander[/name_m] [name_m]Lyall[/name_m]
It’s got a really relaxed and friendly sound to it. I’m not totally sure whether I want to say it/if it should be said with one or two syllables?
Trying it with some other names I really like
[name_m]Alistair[/name_m] [name_m]Lyall[/name_m]
[name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] [name_m]Lyall[/name_m]
[name_m]Rafferty[/name_m] [name_m]Lyall[/name_m]
[name_u]Taran[/name_u] [name_m]Lyall[/name_m]
[name_m]Lyall[/name_m] [name_m]Yves[/name_m]
[name_m]Lyall[/name_m] [name_u]Henry[/name_u]
[name_m]Lyall[/name_m] [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] (I like this one best. I like Lyall’s rolling vowels in contast to Vincent’s sharper sounds)
[name_m]Lyall[/name_m] [name_u]Tristan[/name_u] (ditto).
Definitely usable but not for me (grew up with a Lyle)! It’s definitely a gallant, cozy feel which is a hard combo to strike! First or middle!
I would pair it with strong/classic names like [name_m]Lyall[/name_m] [name_u]Walter[/name_u], [name_m]Lyall[/name_m] [name_u]Pierce[/name_u], [name_m]Lyall[/name_m] [name_m]Isaac[/name_m].
