Lyra - opinions? People seem to dislike it

[name]Hi[/name]! So I’m brand new here. I’m 21 weeks along with a baby girl! (Positive thoughts for her, please… she has a single umbilical artery so I’m a little worried about her, but usually things turn out just fine, and she looks good so far!) My fiance and I are trying hard to come up with a name we love, but it isn’t easy. One that we’ve both agreed on for a while now has been [name]Lyra[/name], though.

We pronounce it as “Lie-ruh.” I love it because it has musical connotations; the two of us met in middle school orchestra, and both are still really active with music. It’s just always been a part of our lives, and I know it will be a part of hers as well.

That said, we’ve had the comments that it sounds like “liar” and kids may tease her. I’ve googled it and seen a lot of dislike due to its similarity to “lycra.” Also, I have a name poll on thebump.com, and [name]Lyra[/name] is by far doing worst, with two thumbs up and 21 thumbs down! Ugh! haha. I mean, I know it doesn’t matter what everyone else thinks if WE love it, but I also want her to love it, and I don’t want to find myself regretting it someday.

Other names I like are [name]Harper[/name], [name]Audra[/name], [name]Emmeline[/name], [name]Calliope[/name], [name]Blythe[/name], [name]Cecily[/name], [name]Aria[/name], and [name]Beatrice[/name]. I’m still open to lots more options, but I just kind of wanted some input on [name]Lyra[/name], since it’s kind of been stuck in my head as a top contender for a while and I’m surprised at how much others seem to hate it!

I like [name]Lyra[/name]! Although it does kind of sound like “liar.” Maybe you could use it as a middle name if you’re worried about that? I also really like the name [name]Audra[/name]!

[name]Lyra[/name] is so beautiful! I know she’ll appreciate when she’s older. When an off-the-beaten-track name such as [name]Lyra[/name] shows up to the more well-known names, people will almost always choose the well-known ones. It’s pretty, it has meaning, it’s modern yet not inaccessible. A note on teasing: If someone wants to tease someone else, they will, no matter what their name is. I didn’t even think of “liar” until you mentioned it. It’s such a beautiful name, and strong, too! When people see it on your baby girl they will love it. Seeing the face with name always changes the game. Go for it! Congrats on a sweet daughter!

I love [name]Lyra[/name], along with [name]Emmeline[/name] and [name]Calliope[/name] (that is a nice one!).

Here in the UK, [name]Lyra[/name] is most famous as the main character in the ‘His Dark Materials’ trilogy by [name]Philip[/name] Pullman. It’s definitely as famous as [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] here, and anyone who heard [name]Lyra[/name] would bring to mind that book in the same way that anyone who heard [name]Hermione[/name] would bring [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] to mind. Having said that, [name]Lyra[/name] is a smart, tough cookie who it would be lovely to be named after imo! It reminds me much more of the musical instrument lyre than lycra or liar, and I think [name]Lyra[/name] [name]Calliope[/name] would be beautiful.

I like [name]Lyra[/name] but for something similar and softer how about [name]Layla[/name]

You know what I’m thinking about [name]Lyra[/name]? Constellation. So it’s an amazing name. It’s really pretty and I love it. [name]Don[/name]'t be afraid to using it.
[name]Lyra[/name], the harp, related to the music and the star, I bet your daughter will be proud of that name.

I think [name]Lyra[/name] is a lovely name and it definitely has connotations [name]Phillip[/name] Pullman’s young adult series which recently became a movie so perhaps more people will have heard of it. If you love it you should go for it!

You both love it so you should go for it! It makes me think of lyric, not liar.

I love [name]Lyra[/name]. It’s a guilty pleasure of mine. I also think constellation. I love that it has meaning for both of you and that you both love it. If you love it, and teach her the meaning behind it, i’m sure she’ll love it too. But, if you’re worried about it sounding close to liar, then you could always use it in the middle spot. You have a lot of names listed that would make good first or middle names with [name]Lyra[/name]. And even if it’s in the middle, you can still call her [name]Lyra[/name]. Then the middle name gets used and she doesn’t have to worry about the ‘liar’ teasing potential at school because he first name is something else.

Suggestions:

[name]Lyra[/name] [name]Emmeline[/name]
[name]Lyra[/name] [name]Calliope[/name]
[name]Lyra[/name] [name]Cecily[/name]
[name]Lyra[/name] [name]Beatrice[/name]

[name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Lyra[/name]
[name]Aria[/name] [name]Lyra[/name]
[name]Beatrice[/name] [name]Lyra[/name]

and I think [name]Audrey[/name] [name]Lyra[/name] with nn [name]Audra[/name] sounds very pretty.

[name]Lyra[/name] is nice! I don’t know why, but at first I was pronouncing it lee-ra… not sure which is correct. I agree.with everyone else… If you love it, use it!

I also love [name]Aria[/name] from your list, as it is another musical name

I absolutely love [name]Lyra[/name], and it brings to mind the His Dark Materials books where [name]Lyra[/name] was a smart, tough and determined heroine, which I think makes it even better.

It’s one of my favorite names at the moment, but I’m pronouncing it lee-ra. It sounds prettier that way, I think.

I love [name]Lyra[/name]! Short, sweet, elegant.

[name]Lyra[/name] is one of my favourite names. I don’t think liar, I think constellation.
Its such a pretty, elegant name. Some middle name suggestions:

[name]Lyra[/name] [name]Juliet[/name]
[name]Lyra[/name] [name]Eve[/name]
[name]Lyra[/name] [name]Kate[/name]
[name]Lyra[/name] [name]Pearl[/name]
[name]Lyra[/name] [name]Hazel[/name]
[name]Lyra[/name] [name]Maeve[/name]

[name]Hope[/name] that helped

I love [name]Lyra[/name]! I don’t know why it isn’t better received. I told my family one night that I loved the name, and my sisters gave me a death stare and the older of the two said flatly, “[name]Ashley[/name], that’s a dumb name.” lol. I tried asking them why, but they wouldn’t give me an answer! They just kept saying it was dumb. To this day, I have no clue why they hate it so much! haha. I think it’s a magnificent choice, though, and familiar choices like [name]Lyla[/name]/[name]Lila[/name] are well-loved…

I would go with it if you love it so much (and obviously, it has tons of great meaning for you and your partner personally!), but if you don’t, I think [name]Emmeline[/name], [name]Harper[/name], [name]Calliope[/name], [name]Cecily[/name], and [name]Aria[/name] (although I personally prefer [name]Ariana[/name], [name]Arianne[/name], and [name]Arielle[/name]) are all lovely options. You really can’t go wrong with any of your choices!

Good luck!

Thanks for all your responses! I’m feeling better about the name after all your input, but it’s still stressing me, haha. [name]Just[/name] tonight my aunt [name]Kim[/name], who I really love, told me she liked my other names better and [name]Lyra[/name] reminded her too much of “lie.” There’s that word again! Ugh. But like you all say, it’s what we love that matters, so I’ll keep that in mind.

As far as a middle name, we like [name]Lyra[/name] [name]Grey[/name] and [name]Lyra[/name] [name]Rose[/name]. Her last name will be Gleason, so I think [name]Lyra[/name] [name]Rose[/name] works best with that. I’m still thinking about other ideas too, of course!

[name]Emmeline[/name] is growing on me (I love the name and the nickname “[name]Emmy[/name]/[name]Emmie[/name]” to go with it) and I still like [name]Aria[/name]. Hmm. I dunno. I’ll probably come back in a month or two with a more solid list to just get some final opinions, haha.

Thanks again! You’re all great. <3

I love [name]Lyra[/name] and also think of the constellation. If you do name your baby [name]Lyra[/name], your family and friends will get over their issues within a small amount of time, so don’t worry.

I love [name]Lyra[/name]. It’s very close to the top of my list as well. It’s a beautiful name. I really hope you go with it. Let us know what you decide and I really hope she’s ok. Best of luck!

I think [name]Lyra[/name] is lovely, especially because it has a special meaning to you and your DH. I think people can find reasons to not like any name out there. Same goes for kids, I’m convinced they’ll find a way to tease any name. I bet she’ll appreciate the name because it has special meaning to you guys and it is unique. It’s not like you just went with the number 1# girls name that has no personal meaning to you.

Wishing you a healthy pregnancy! I’ve also heard that single arteries are usually NBD so I’m sure she’ll be fine
