We are very keen on [name]Mabel[/name] for our next child, but we are a little worried how it fits with our other children’s names. I know some people are not fussed about sibsets, but personally I would like my children’s names to flow nicely with each other and fit together as a family.
So my question is does [name]Mabel[/name] work with [name]Olivia[/name]?? Is [name]Olivia[/name] too pretty and [name]Mabel[/name] to plain?
I’m so confused and would love to hear some thoughts!
What about using [name]Amabel[/name] nn [name]Mabel[/name]? I think [name]Amabel[/name] and [name]Olivia[/name] definately sound like sisters and [name]Amabel[/name] is gorgeous! What are your other children’s names do you mind me asking? I think [name]Mabel[/name] and [name]Olivia[/name] could work particularly if you work to coordinate middles… Something like [name]Mabel[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name] may tie her to her sister a little more… But It depends on [name]Olivia[/name]'s middle too…
[name]Mabel[/name] really appeals to me. I’d say it’s cozier sounding than [name]Olivia[/name] rather than plainer; if anything, [name]Olivia[/name]'s ubiquity makes it the less interesting of the two. [name]Both[/name] have vintage charm.
We are thinking [name]Josephine[/name] as a middle name as it is my grandmother’s MN.
[name]Olivia[/name] is [name]Olivia[/name] [name]Grace[/name]… (hand hits forehead!). I don’t know what we were thinking! [name]Both[/name] [name]Olivia[/name]'s names have special significance to my Husband and I and honour family, but seriously we had our heads in the sand on that one!! Luckily [name]Olivia[/name] is not too common in our area of Australia and we are yet to meet another our daughters age.
Our son is [name]Henry[/name] [name]James[/name], again both honour family and [name]Henry[/name] is only now becoming more popular in Aus.
Anyway we would have
[name]Olivia[/name] [name]Grace[/name]
[name]Henry[/name] [name]James[/name]
[name]Mabel[/name] [name]Josephine[/name]
I love [name]Mabel[/name], it’s on our list. DH really likes the nn [name]May[/name], so that’s part of it. It’s true that [name]Olivia[/name] is more popular generally than [name]Mabel[/name], but if you say [name]Olivia[/name] is not quite so common where you live, the contrast is not going to be too strong. (Also, [name]IMO[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] is going to climb very soon, too.) They’re both very much lovely vintage names that are either familiar enough or simple enough to be straightfoward.
I think [name]Mabel[/name] [name]Josephine[/name] is lovely with your two other kids. If anything, you pick a slightly more frilly mn to balance [name]Olivia[/name], but I really don’t think you have to. I don’t think anyone would think twice if you had an [name]Olivia[/name], [name]Henry[/name], and [name]Mabel[/name] sibset.
I think [name]Mabel[/name] [name]Josephine[/name] is gorgeous and sounds pretty great with [name]Olivia[/name] [name]Grace[/name] and [name]Henry[/name] [name]James[/name]!
I have [name]Mabel[/name] and [name]Olive[/name] on my list as sisters - short, sweet, and vintage. But [name]Mabel[/name] and [name]Olivia[/name] sounds good too. I actually really like one of the above poster’s suggestion of [name]Amabel[/name] and [name]Olivia[/name].
I was going to say [name]Mabel[/name] and [name]Olive[/name] sounded better to me (too late for that, I know)… but I also love the suggestion of [name]Amabel[/name]!
I think [name]Mabel[/name] [name]Josephine[/name] works too though.
I am so curious to read the comments here. OP and I have really similar name tastes. My current front runner is [name]Mabel[/name] and [name]Henry[/name] [name]James[/name] is our choice if its a boy. My other daughters are [name]Mara[/name] [name]Kathryn[/name], [name]Audra[/name] [name]Neel[/name], and [name]Elizabeth[/name] ([name]Eliza[/name]) [name]Marguerite[/name]. I am questioning the same thing about does it fit. DH has said no -a ending this time.
Oh [name]Amabel[/name] is definitely an option! Thanks for the suggestion!
[name]Olivia[/name] was chosen to honour my great grandmother [name]Olive[/name], but DH HATES [name]Olive[/name], so [name]Olivia[/name] was our compromise. I can’t count the number of times I have wished we could have [name]Olive[/name]!
It’s very reassuring to hear that [name]Mabel[/name] wouldn’t sound out of place next to [name]Olivia[/name] and [name]Henry[/name].
If anyone has any other suggestions I would love to hear them.
[name]Mabel[/name] is our favourite, but we still want to explore other options.
Other names we like are:
[name]Iris[/name] - DH’s favourite
[name]Alice[/name] - becoming a bit popular here
[name]Edith[/name] - my name crush but DH not sold.
