I love the name [name_u]Mackay[/name_u], pronouned Ma-[name_u]KAI[/name_u]
Does anyone know a boy with this name? Is it pronounced that way? If so, is it often mispronounced?
I wonder how else it could be spelled…

I would assume this name to be easily mispronounced. I know someone with this surname pronounced [name_m]Mack[/name_m]-ay (long a ending). Maybe the spelling [name_m]Mekhi[/name_m] would get closer to the pronunciation you want. Although neither names are my style.
yeah if you want “kai” instead of “kay,” go with [name_m]Mekhi[/name_m]… Many people are already familiar enough with the name (ie., [name_m]Mekhi[/name_m] Phifer) to pronounce it correctly
I’ve never heard of [name_m]Mekhi[/name_m] before…
For [name_u]Mackay[/name_u] I think you should go with [name_m]Mekhi[/name_m] to avoid confusion.
This is my sister’s boyfriend’s last name, pronounced just like you spelt it out. Until I heard it said out-loud, I would have pronounced it incorrectly, more like [name_m]MACK[/name_m]-ay. I think you would run into pronunciation issues since, going by the spelling I wouldn’t say its intuitive.
As for the Mehki suggestion, that’s a name I’ve never heard before, and have mangled the pronunciation in my head just reading it. I wouldn’t guess the pronunciation as Ma-[name_u]KAI[/name_u], more like MEH-Key, for me…
I would say it muh-[name_u]Kay[/name_u]. And [name_m]Mekhi[/name_m] just looks made up. I would go with the traditional spelling, [name_m]Makai[/name_m]. [name_m]Makai[/name_m] is Hawaiian and it means ‘in the direction of the ocean’. [name_u]Kai[/name_u] is a well known name, so [name_m]Makai[/name_m] shouldn’t have any pronunciation issues.
I just thought of another spelling too, McKye or MacKye…
Here is [name_m]New[/name_m] Zealand ‘kai’ means food in Maori. So I’m unsure about that aspect of it too.
In what language does “ay” make the long “I” sound? Am I missing something here?
Yes, this exactly. Plus, I’d butcher [name_m]Mekhi[/name_m] even more than [name_u]Mackay[/name_u], guessing something like mehk-HEE.
I believe it is Scottish ![]()
Come on, you’ve all really never heard of [name_m]Mekhi[/name_m] Phifer?! Never watched ER? 8 Mile? [name_f]Dawn[/name_f] of the Dead?! Ya’ll are killing me
I’m too old for this forum.
That being said, [name_m]Makai[/name_m] works, too.
[name_u]Mackay[/name_u] is a Scottish last name. If you live in [name_f]Scotland[/name_f] you wouldn’t have trouble with the pronunciation but people would probably say it’s a last name or their last name.
[name_u]Mackay[/name_u] is pronounced the same as McKay (muh-[name_u]KAY[/name_u]). If you want to have the pronunciation muh-[name_u]KYE[/name_u], I would suggest using one of the names previous posters have suggested.
