Mackie

My husband and I have come up with the name [name]Mackie[/name] if we have a little girl (I am pregnant and don’t know baby’s sex). The way we came up with this is that [name]MACK[/name] are the first letters of each of our parents names, thus we came up with [name]Mackie[/name]. We love this because this will be the first grandchild for all of our parents and we think its a fun way to honor them.
Here are my questions:
1- Can we use [name]Mackie[/name] as a full name not nickname? My husband likes this idea
2- Is [name]Mackie[/name] OK as a nickname for [name]Margaret[/name]? [name]Both[/name] of my grandmothers were Margarets so I like honoring them as well.
3- If we name her [name]Margaret[/name] [name]Ann[/name] C… (our last name) does [name]Mackie[/name] make even more sense b/c then its also her initials turned into a nickname? [name]Ann[/name] is also a family name on my husbands side of the family.

I like the idea of her having a full formal name but my husband loves [name]Mackie[/name] as is…HELP!!

  1. I don’t think [name]Mackie[/name] is first name material at all.

  2. I think it could work as a nn of [name]Margaret[/name].

  3. Yes, it’d make even more sense.

I have an acquaintance that calls her daughter [name]Mackie[/name], short for [name]McKenzie[/name]. I think you could use it as a nickname for any of the “Mc___” names. [name]Margaret[/name] is a bit of a stretch. I like the idea of using M A C as initials.

I would use [name]Mackie[/name] as a nn for [name]Margaret[/name]. While I appreciate the sentiment behind the name, [name]Mackie[/name] sounds like a name that will forever remain in childhood and won’t want to grow up (eg. it wouldn’t age well). Giving your daughter the option of reverting to [name]Margaret[/name] as she matures would be advisable.

  1. I would avoid using [name]Mackie[/name] as a full name, although I think McKay would be cute.
  2. I think [name]Mackie[/name] would be a fine nn for [name]Margaret[/name] because [name]Margaret[/name] has many established nn’s that are stretches ([name]Daisy[/name]) that make this one seem more natural. I also agree with pp that [name]Mackenzie[/name] or [name]Mckayla[/name] are also nice options.
  3. I think that might be cool, but not a necessity

I love [name]Margaret[/name] [name]Ann[/name] C. nn [name]Mackie[/name]…it gives her a super pretty classic name with a nn that you love and has meaning in every part of her name.

I wouldnt use [name]Mackie[/name] as a first name on its own.

I think it could definitely work as a nn for [name]Margaret[/name]. My mom used to call me [name]Daisy[/name], which is a stretch for [name]Margaret[/name] but is seen as acceptable. With the initials it would make even more sense. I’d say go for it! It’s a great nn and so is [name]Mack[/name] for when she’s older or any other variation of [name]Margaret[/name].

I prefer using [name]Mackenzie[/name] or [name]McKenna[/name]. Margareth is also a good choice.
But not [name]Mackie[/name] as a full name.
I like the idea of using initial for the nickname [name]Mackie[/name]. Margareth [name]Ann[/name] C. is pretty.

Honestly, this is so odd. My boyfriend & I named our 13-week-old English Pointer male puppy [name]Mack[/name], nickname Mackee. I almost always call him Mackee (Pronounced the same way as [name]Mackie[/name], the ‘ee’ ending is a personal sentimental/commemorative spelling for me). As much as I love his name and nickname, the thought of it being a stand-alone name for a little girl…I don’t care for it at all in that sense.

I like it as a nickname for something more formal. Having the initials M.A.C. would make it work really well, although i do think it’s a cute, workable but not common nn for [name]Margaret[/name]. Since that would honor both of your grandmothers, i especially think that naming her [name]Margaret[/name] A… C… would be a perfect solution.

Looks like I’m the only one here who thinks [name]Mackie[/name] should be her full first name! I think that if that’s what you’re going to call her all the time, and if it has sentimental meaning behind it, that’s what should be on her birth certificate. It’s spellable, pronouncable, and close enough to all of the [name]McKenna[/name]'s and [name]Makayla[/name]'s in the world right now.

1- It would take a special person to pull it off, and I personally wouldn’t risk it.
2- Definitely!!
3- Yes! That’s adorable.
I just wanted to add that I got really excited when I saw this post because I know this girl whose name is [name]Mackenzie[/name] and goes strictly by [name]Mackie[/name]. She’s so gorgeous!

To be completely honest, I think [name]Mackie[/name] is hideous on a female. It sounds like a rough old man’s name and isn’t feminine in the slightest. Sorry. Why not save [name]Mack[/name] for a boy?

I actually like Makelyn Mak-a-lynn. Or Macklyn. Like [name]Jaqueline[/name] or [name]Jacklyn[/name]. I’ve always loved it!

Macklin/Macklyn/Macklen are all male names as well.

  1. Not a good idea.
  2. Yes.
  3. Great idea.
  1. Yes. I am in the minority camp of name the child what they will be called.
  2. Anything can be a nn, that’s the point of a nn.
  3. I love this idea because then the name is packed with even more special meaning by honoring the sound like great-grandmothers as well as the grandparents.

That would be my honest assessment as well.

Before anyone jumps all over me for being rude - I presume people come here for honest opinions (or else why bother asking), and this is my honest opinion. Give your daughter a name that you love in and of itself. If it has a family connection, all the better. Each new person deserves a name that is a lovely name for them, not some (frankly very contrived) acronym of other family members’ initials.

Sorry, but your logic of getting to this name makes no sense to me.

This. Absolutely.

I vote for option number 3, I think it’s great!
