Madchen?

Pronounced [name_f]May[/name_f]-chin. Can it work? Is it too tied to the actress? Is it too weird? Please share your thoughts with me! Thanks:)

Isn’t Madchen [name_m]German[/name_m] for “girl”?

^^ Yes, Madchen means “girl” in [name_m]German[/name_m]

It feels too literal as a name. I speak [name_m]German[/name_m] and it would literally be like calling your daughter “Girl”.

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Gretchen[/name_f], Madicken, [name_u]Malin[/name_u]…?

I think its weird, and a bit horrible in a way. It’s like you couldn’t be bothered to name her properly so just called her ‘girl’.

Not a fan. At all

It’s spelled Mädchen, with the letter ä, not a, and if you can’t access the letter ä it’s spelled Maedchen. For this reason and the reasons mentioned above, I don’t think it’s a suitable name.

It feels too wordy for me, but I wouldn’t call it horrible, since [name_f]Elle[/name_f] is pretty popular and means “she.” I like the suggestion of [name_f]Gretchen[/name_f], or maybe [name_f]Evchen[/name_f], [name_f]Katja[/name_f], [name_f]Annika[/name_f], [name_f]Anoushka[/name_f], [name_f]Ailis[/name_f], [name_f]Maelys[/name_f], [name_f]Manon[/name_f]?

I’m not a fan for the reasons mentioned above. Sorry.

Yeah, it feels too literal for my taste too. I second the suggestion of [name_f]Gretchen[/name_f].

This is so horrible, lol! I speak [name_m]German[/name_m] and you would literally call your girl girl so this should definitely not be a real name!

When I lived in Germany Mädchen was used by a few people I knew as a nickname/term of endearment for their daughters after it was cutsied up a little, so no, I don’t really see it being a viable option for a first name.

It’s not my style, but I don’t think it’s as horrible as everyone else seems to be saying. I think you may have to continuously correct the pronunciation as my first instinct was to say it as it was spelt. But if names like [name_f]Elle[/name_f] (“she”) or [name_f]Colleen[/name_f] (“girl”) work as names I don’t see why this one couldn’t

Unless you’re [name_m]German[/name_m] or living in Germany, I don’t think Mädchen is useable.

Sorry I don’t think it works. It’d be super strange for anyone she meets who speaks [name_m]German[/name_m].

I don’t really like this name, even though my name is very similar. Also, this name means girl in [name_m]German[/name_m]. I much prefer [name_f]Gretchen[/name_f] (even though I’m biased)

[name_m]How[/name_m] do you pronounce Madicken?

Thanks for all the feedback:)

I think it is pretty! And you could be creative with nicknames if you want to, but if you don’t want I don’t think it would be forced on her like some names would.

I like the name, though I was clearly pronouncing it wrong before. I love [name_f]Madelief[/name_f] even more, and [name_f]Maida[/name_f].

Pronunciation would be thing to clarify for folks, but people mispronounce hundreds of names anyway.

It is certainly more interesting than yet another [name_f]Emma[/name_f] (a lovely name, but way overused).
