Maddi nn for Matilda

Is this too much of a stretch?
We love the name [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], but our older daughter is [name_u]Billie[/name_u], and we don’t want to end up with a [name_u]Billie[/name_u] and a [name_f]Tillie[/name_f]…

Welcome to Nameberry!

Maddi isn’t too much of a stretch at all. Additional ideas could be [name_f]Mila[/name_f], [name_f]Tilda[/name_f], or [name_u]Mattie[/name_u]? But [name_f]Maddi[/name_f] definitely works!

Matilda nn [name_f]Maddi[/name_f] totally works

I think [name_f]Maddi[/name_f] works. I’ve heard of [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] as a nn for [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] before, so [name_f]Maddi[/name_f] isn’t really a stretch at all!

I’ve heard people suggest maddi as a nn for [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]. Agree with previous suggestions for other nn [name_f]Mila[/name_f] & tilda

I knew a [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] “[name_u]Mattie[/name_u]” before so I definitely think it works (even with that spelling)!

I don’t think it’s a stretch at all! I’ve heard of [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] short for [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], and that sounds almost exactly like [name_f]Maddi[/name_f], so I think it’s totally a nickname that’s right there.

Definitely not a stretch! I like others have mentioned, I would probably spell it [name_u]Mattie[/name_u], but I guess that would depend on your accent and if you pronounce them the same (I do).

Not too much of a stretch at all! In fact, I mentioned [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] to my husband as a name possibility for our second daughter, and the first thing out of his mouth was, “People would call her [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] though. Isn’t that B and T’s (our friends) daughter’s name?” (she’s [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] nn [name_f]Maddie[/name_f]).

If you go with the alternative spelling of [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f], you can also get the nn [name_f]Hilda[/name_f] out of it if that’s your kind of thing.

It can definitely work, but I’d personally go for [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] over [name_f]Maddie[/name_f]. I almost used [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] for my daughter and feel it doesn’t necessarily need a nickname… But if you want one, [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] or [name_f]Tilda[/name_f] (or [name_f]Maddie[/name_f]) could work for you. I love [name_u]Billie[/name_u] BTW - [name_u]Billie[/name_u] and [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] are so cute together!

Matti as a spelling is perfectly appropriate for [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]. What about [name_f]Tilda[/name_f]? or [name_f]Attie[/name_f]? I just feel like we’re all overwhelmed by [name_f]Maddie[/name_f]’s right now thanks to the persistent [name_u]Madison[/name_u] trend, and [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] is so gorgeous.

I definitely think it works!! Super sweet xx
