When I was looking for names to honor my grandmother([name_f]Mattye[/name_f]) it was between [name_f]Martha[/name_f], [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]. I ending up choosing [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]. In a recent thread of mine [name_f]Mathilde[/name_f] was suggested and now I’m starting to really like [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] again. For some reason I’ve always thought [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] were too close, but now I’m reconsidering it. I think it was because [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] and [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] are very close in sound, but what if they were nicknamed [name_f]Tillie[/name_f] and [name_f]Maddie[/name_f]/[name_f]Leni[/name_f] instead?
I’m using the french pronunciation(ma-də-[name_m]LEN[/name_m]) for [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] and [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] is mə-[name_m]TIL[/name_m]-də. ə is the ‘uh’ sound so the beginning of [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] is ‘mah’ and the beginning of [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] is ‘muh’.
I actually know sisters called [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Martha[/name_f]!
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] sounds fine to me - they share the first two letters, but they’re very distinct sounds. They’re both beautiful, too. Although with [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], [name_f]Mathilde[/name_f] looks a bit more in place but I understand that’s possibly too [name_m]French[/name_m] ([name_f]Mathilda[/name_f], maybe?).
I think it will be a matter of individual opinion, but I think [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] and [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] could work, yes, provided you didn’t shorten them to [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] and [name_f]Maddie[/name_f]. Optimally though, I’d prefer if there was a child in between [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] & [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] with a different initial, to break up the M’s a little. I love the [name_m]French[/name_m] pron. of [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], by the way!
I actually was thinking this very recently, but I don’t think they are too matchy, they both start and end differently. ([name_m]Even[/name_m] though they both start with the name letters, they have different sounds) Plus the potential nicknames are completely different.
I am not a fan of matching first letters for siblings but I don’t mind these two. Maybe bc they are both really pretty names and you don’t get the sense that they were chosen for them M’s. Although I love nicknames I really like the full names for these two. Saying that however, [name_f]Millie[/name_f] could be another cute nn option for [name_f]Matilda[/name_f].
I don’t think [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] and [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] are too ‘matchy’ at all. If you called [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] “Lenie” and [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] “mattie” I think that would be fine. Good luck!
They’re a bit close for my taste, but I think it’d be fine for someone else to use. Especially if you use the [name_m]French[/name_m] pronunciation of [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], the English one would be closer to [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] to my ears.
I’m usually not a fan of siblings have names that start with the same letter, but I love these names so much. [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] is on my list now. All I need to do is find a middle that I like with it and that flows well.

I haven’t even thought of [name_f]Mille[/name_f] for [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]! I kind of like it.
@pacifica
If I was to use [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] and [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] together I definitely wouldn’t use them back to back. The [name_m]French[/name_m] pronunciation is my absolutely favorite.

I love that there are sisters named [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Martha[/name_f]. There aren’t a lot of pople who like the name [name_f]Martha[/name_f], but I really like it.
I don’t like the ‘h’ in [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Mathilde[/name_f].
I think they’d make great sisters. They share the first letter and number of syllables, but they feel different enough to be individuals. This would be a good example of twin girl names that definitely ‘go’ together but aren’t matching (unless you decide to call them [name_f]Tillie[/name_f] and [name_f]Millie[/name_f]).
I wouldn’t do [name_f]Tillie[/name_f] and [name_f]Millie[/name_f] at all. [name_m]Way[/name_m] too similar. I don’t think either nickname works for [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]. They are potential nicknames for [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] only. I like [name_f]Leni[/name_f] for [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], but my family will most likely use [name_f]Maddie[/name_f].
