Madeleine pronunciation?

Hello all,
I always thought [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] was pronounced just like [name_f]Madeline[/name_f]. Mad-uh-line. Recently I saw a post asking if [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] could be pronounced this way, and someone replied with something along the lines of “just go with the regular spelling ([name_f]Madeline[/name_f]) and save yourself a lot of trouble.” Now I’m confused. [name_m]How[/name_m] do you say [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]? Is it different than [name_f]Madeline[/name_f]?

Also, which spelling do you prefer? I love the [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] version, and think it’s much more elegant and attractive than [name_f]Madeline[/name_f], which I actually don’t like all that much.

LL

I still pronounce [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] the same way as [name_f]Madeline[/name_f]… I didn’t know there was another pronunciation.

I pronounce the [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] spelling like Mad-eh-layn.

The original [name_m]French[/name_m] pronunciation of [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] is [mahd-[name_m]LEN[/name_m]]. The anglicized pronunciation is [mah-duh-len] or [mah-dah-lyn]. The English variant [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] is pronounced [mah-da-[name_f]LINE[/name_f]].

Phonetically speaking, it makes no sense to pronounce “leine” as “line” in a [name_m]French[/name_m] word.

This pretty much sums stuff up. I think [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] looks absolutely gorgeous, but I much prefer the pronunciation of [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] (plus I fell in love with it reading [name_m]Matt[/name_m] Logelin’s blog - http://www.mattlogelin.com)

I’m totally with @sugarplumfairy and @oliviasarah here–grammatically, [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] said like [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] drives me batty! I love [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] with the [name_m]French[/name_m] pronunciation (mad-len/mahd-len) or the more English MAD-eh-len, though. Such a beautiful name!

I pronounce [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] as MAD-eh-lehn - always. Tho I know some ppl pronounce it as mad-eh-layne. I’ve never heard [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] pronounced mad-eh-line.

I pronounce [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] Mad-eh-[name_m]LEN[/name_m] (sometimes it comes out more like Mad-eh-[name_u]LAYNE[/name_u]) and [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] Mad-eh-LEEN or MAD-eh-line. I strongly dislike the [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] pronunciation and spelling but think [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] is very pretty
