Madeline? Help

Our first daughter’s name is [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]. We like the name [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] (pronounced Mad-uh-line, like the book series.

[name_f][/name_f]

However we’re worried everyone will pronounce it [name_f]Madelynn[/name_f] and not [name_f]Madeline[/name_f]. Any thoughts or advice? Has anyone had the same issue? Help!

[name_f]Madalyne[/name_f]?

[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] & [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] are lovely together!

In my experience, I find most people will default to your preferred pronunciation for [name_f]Madeline[/name_f], as the
[name_f][/name_f]-lyn / -lynn endings are distinctly the other pronunciation. Personally, I pronounce the [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] variants as follows:
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Madeline[/name_f] = mad-uh-line
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] = mad-uh-layne
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] = mad-uh-lihn

I am literally obsessed with [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] and [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] as sisters [name_f][/name_f]! [name_f][/name_f] What a perfect pair [name_f][/name_f]!

[name_f][/name_f]

I think no matter the name people struggle to pronounce names as dialects [name_f][/name_f], accents are different everywhere

I would just use it - and don’t mess with the spelling. You might have to say “Madeline like Caroline” to a few people but I don’t think it’ll be such a problem as to not use the name. It’s very pretty with Eloise.

I’m Madeline - “line”
Madeleine - “lenn” (or “lehn”)
Madelyn(n) - “lin” (or “luhn”)

Hopefully someone with a kid Madeline sees this!

Edit: should have said, in Oz, the default is probably “lin” for all spellings but I don’t think people would find it hard to adjust to a “it’s the ‘line’ version”.

I think it will depend where you are [name_f][/name_f]- I know in the UK, Mad-uh-lin is often the go to regardless of whether you spell it -line, -leine, or -lyn, but I’d try it out on people around you, get a sense of how they would say this spelling

I would always pronounce the Madeline spelling like the books… :woman_shrugging:

Ditto! This is how I would say them, too (in Australia, for reference).

Some people will pronounce it wrong and need to be corrected. You have to decide how much that would bother you.

I think being two popular book characters will help you because people will think of the book pronunciation before saying it.

People will pronounce it wrong, but if you’re firm about your chosen pronunciation, it should stick! After all the word “line” is right there in the name, so it makes more sense to pronounce it your way!

Every person I’ve ever met with that name (in any spelling) has pronounced it Madelynn. I imagine she’d have to correct people a lot. So if that really bothers you, you should probably pick another name.

People are probably going to mispronounce it either way. I have a very normal name and people still mess it up all the time, but it doesn’t bother me. [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] is so beautiful, and it’s not some super unusual pronunciation or spelling so I think people will figure it out pretty quickly.

-line names can be tricky, with so many different pronunciations. But I absolutely love them and wouldn’t let pronunciation worries stop you. Personally, I would default to pronouncing [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] your preferred way, like the word “line”, [name_f][/name_f] and I would do the same with [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] and [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. (I’m in Canada).

I have a daughter named [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], with the ending pronounced like the word “lean”. One of my brothers, who is 14 years younger than me, always calls her E-van-ge-LYNN, despite multiple corrections. He’s not doing it on purpose, but he lives far away from us and just can’t seem to keep it straight. I kind of wondered if it was a generational thing, with the -lyn endings being so popular in [name_f]Gen[/name_f] Z. But it doesn’t really bother me, because I think it sounds pretty that way too. No one else so far has had a problem pronouncing it, but in my experience, unexpected things come up with any name.

I can see people mispronouncing [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] as with the “lyn” ending, but if it doesn’t bother you, go ahead and use it.

I also like the pairing of [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] and [name_f]Madeline[/name_f].

Sounds great! In all honesty, just correct them! Makes a more popular name even moreo unique. Plus it’s likely that she will end up going by [name_f]Maddy[/name_f] or [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] too! (something else to consider)

However, if you’re sitll concerned, here’s some other options I think would go great with [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]:

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Natalie[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Marien[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Lillian[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Adeline[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Penelope[/name_f]
