Madeline pronunciation?

My husband and I both like the pronunciation Mad-a-[name_u]LYN[/name_u], but he hates the spelling [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f]. He likes the spelling [name_f]Madeline[/name_f], but I worry that most will pronounce it Mad-a-[name_f]LINE[/name_f] (like the book). I don’t love the spelling [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] either, but it will ensure the pronunciation we want. Ugh.

[name_m]How[/name_m] would you pronounce [name_f]Madeline[/name_f]?

Almost every mad uh [name_u]Lynn[/name_u] I know spells it [name_f]Madeline[/name_f].

Everyone I know called [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] pronounces it Mad-a-lyn. For me, the Mad-a-line pronunciation is spelled [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f].

[name_f]Madeline[/name_f] = Mad-a-[name_f]LINE[/name_f]
[name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] = Mad-uh-[name_u]Lyn[/name_u]
[name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] = Mad-a-len

I pronounce [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] Mad-uh-line
I pronounce [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] mad-uh-[name_u]Lyn[/name_u]

And [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] Mad-uh-lyn or Mad-uh-leene

Looks like I will have to correct people either way ha

I think it depends on where you live, at least partly. I think “MAD-uh-lin” is more-or-less standard for [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] in [name_m]Britain[/name_m], and pronouncing it “mad-uh-[name_f]LINE[/name_f]” sounds very American to me. In [name_f]France[/name_f] of course, it would be “MAD’leen”. Perhaps quiz people near you?

[name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] would be “mad-[name_m]LEN[/name_m]”, for the record - or perhaps “MAD-uh-len” if anglicised.

I pronounce all spellings mad uh lyn

I love this name but I GREATLY prefer the spelling [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]. I’ve always pronounced it Mad-uh-[name_u]LYN[/name_u], but with [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] I would say Mad-uh-[name_f]LINE[/name_f].

People with this spelling who I know pronounce it with the lyn sound but the line at the end makes me want to say line. I would spell it [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] if you want that pronounciation where I think you’d get lyn or [name_m]Len[/name_m]

Totally agree with @kmdharrington!

I pronounce [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] like Mad-uh-lyn, but that is the pronunciation I prefer. I don’t like any alternative spellings for that pronunciation.

I prefer [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] as well. It looks cleaner. My sister’s middle name is [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] and she pronounces it like [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] so I don’t think it would be an issue. I’ve known several Madelines and all say it [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f]. [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] is said more like “mad-eh-[name_m]LEN[/name_m]”.

I would say Mad-a-line

Thank you! I guess it’s just a matter of correcting a few people. I read the [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] books to my daughters so I have that pronunciation stuck in my head when I see that spelling

The only [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] I know pronounces it mad-uh-lyn.

I say [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] - Mad-uh-line like the book/show

Most of the mad-uh-lyns I know also spell it [name_f]Madeline[/name_f]. I don’t think mad-uh-line is as common, so it’s not people’s first instinct.

Thank you!

[name_f]Madeline[/name_f] = Mad-a-[name_f]LINE[/name_f]
[name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] = Mad-uh-[name_u]Lyn[/name_u]
[name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] = Mad-a-len
