I was able to get my boyfriend to forget Paysleigh/[name_f]Paisleigh[/name_f] (sort of) and he said that from the names I liked from your suggestions he likes Maëlys. We want to use his mother’s name as a middle name but I’d like some opinions on the flow. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think Maëlys [name_f]Della[/name_f] flows alright? Or should I (we) keep searching for a different first name?
Also, how can you find out how popular a name is in your country? (We don’t live in the US)
[name_m]How[/name_m] do you pronounce [name_f]Della[/name_f]? [name_f]Maelys[/name_f] is beautiful! It’s a great choice
Behindthename.com has a list for most popular baby names in a lot of different countries you might be able to find your country’s top names there (though I don’t think all countries update their list each year)
[name_m]How[/name_m] do you pronounce [name_f]Maelys[/name_f]? [name_f]Della[/name_f] flows okay. [name_f]Delphine[/name_f] and [name_f]Delphinia[/name_f] could maybe work as a nod towards your mother-in-law.
[name_f]Della[/name_f]= [name_f]Ella[/name_f] with a D at the beginning
Maëlys= may-leese
Changing the middle name isn’t really our thing; both of us like [name_f]Della[/name_f] and the meaning behind it. [name_f]Delphine[/name_f] and [name_f]Delphinia[/name_f] remind me of Dolphin (sorry, no offense to those who like them!)
I pronounce Maëlys ma-eeh-lys since the dots on the ë have exactly that purpose; to not let the aë be fused together but make them 2 syllables (same as Eloïse). If you don’t intend to use a 3 syllable pronunciation I’d go with [name_f]Maelys[/name_f].
Maëlys [name_f]Della[/name_f] has a very nice flow.
If you spell it as Maëlys, it’s pronounced Ma-Eh-Liss. It’s a very popular name in [name_m]French[/name_m] [name_f]Canada[/name_f]. [name_f]Maelys[/name_f] would be [name_f]May[/name_f]-Liss. No idea how you’d spell something pronounced [name_f]May[/name_f]-[name_f]Leese[/name_f], but this isn’t it. It’s a wonderful name, though, I think you just got the pronunciation wrong. There’s also Maélie (Ma-Ay-[name_u]Lee[/name_u]) or [name_f]Maelie[/name_f] ([name_f]May[/name_f]-[name_u]Lee[/name_u]).
Maëlys is a [name_m]French[/name_m] name, as [name_u]Mickie[/name_u] pointed out, and requires the diaeresis to be pronounced correctly.
From what I have gathered researching [name_m]French[/name_m] naming blogs/sites, Maëlys is a contracted name that appeared in the 80s, and gained popularity in [name_f]France[/name_f] in the last decade. Unfortunately, the name is considered quite déclassé in [name_f]France[/name_f], I’m guessing somewhat akin to our [name_f]Nevaeh[/name_f].
We don’t live in [name_f]France[/name_f] so I don’t know how much that really affects us (also, I don’t speak [name_m]French[/name_m] so I can’t read the blog, sorry!)
Brenbren, that clip makes more sense! (: I of course have a Canadian-[name_m]French[/name_m] accent, not a [name_f]France[/name_f]-[name_m]French[/name_m] accent, so that’s why the pronunciation is a bit different for me! As for the “déclassé” “[name_f]Neveah[/name_f]” comment, I have personally never heard that from anyone. Maëlys is seen has a modern but lovely name here in [name_f]Canada[/name_f]. I suppose it could be different in [name_f]France[/name_f], but I’ve never heard anything about it! If I were you, I wouldn’t worry too much about that blog (:
