Maeve?

I don’t fancy the name or anything, but do you like it??

I just found out that [name]Maeve[/name] actually means “she who intoxicates.”
Does that put you off??

[name]Just[/name] wondering,

Really dislike it, always have. I don’t think it has an attractive sound and it seems to be the stereotypical girls’ name that everyone suggests when someone asks for Irish names. It’s gotten to the point where I literally roll my eyes every time I see it. I especially dislike it mixed with names from other countries (i.e. [name]Annika[/name] [name]Maeve[/name], [name]India[/name] [name]Maeve[/name], [name]Gianna[/name] [name]Maeve[/name]).

I’m probably the only one on nameberry who doesn’t like it, though. And to answer your question, meaning doesn’t bother me much. Very few people are ever going to know the meaning of a name right off the bat when you say it. For example, my niece is named [name]Cassandra[/name], but no one to my knowledge has ever said to her “Didn’t you know your name means ‘ensnarer of men’? That’s so weird!”.

I really don’t like [name]Maeve[/name] too.

@greyer I don’t like it either, it rhymes with slave, pave, gave which for some odd reason bothers me. It just makes me imagine some fat old lady who chain smokes and lives in a trailer.

For what it’s worth, I love the name [name]Maeve[/name] - she has a strong Irish, mythical background with a lot of history.

Haha. I actually like the meaning. Meaning sexy… Mhh, maybe that isn’t a good thing for a child’s name. Lol. I like the name but I don’t think I would use it.

I like [name]Maeva[/name] better.

I’m actually quite fond of [name]Maeve[/name]. I think it has a more mysterious and meaningful sound than [name]Mae[/name]. I also find it more striking and memorable. I like how it’s a name with history, but is still unusual without being too out there. I’m not one who cares much about meanings, so “she who intoxicates” doesn’t really bug me that much. The only thing that puts me off of a name I like is an immediate negative association, which [name]Maeve[/name] doesn’t have (that I know of).

I don’t mind it. I normally don’t care about meanings, but this one is pretty bad and would be a deal breaker for me.

I like it and am not put off by the meaning at all. The only Maeves I’ve known in real life have been very cool, young, literary women, so I’m sure that helps.

I have a 6 month old named [name]Maeve[/name] [name]Josephine[/name] and some of the associations other posters have with the name are pretty funny. Clearly, my association is just my happy sunshine baby, but outside of the Nameberry world, people are still pretty perplexed by the name. It’s not a name most non-Berries immediately think of when asked for an Irish girl’s name.

I’ve never been a fan of the name. I don’t really know why, though. At least it’s an actual name, and spelled correctly, so I don’t think it’d be bad.

I love [name]Maeve[/name]! I think us berries are just getting a little saturated with it, like we did with [name]Clementine[/name].

I adore [name]Maeve[/name]…mine is 7 years old, and she’s as wonderful as her name. We loved the name in spite of the meaning, and we call [name]Maeve[/name] our Irish Warrior [name]Queen[/name].

i love it! being Irish however, i much prefer the traditional spellings, the one i’d most use being Méabh.
if i lived abroad though, i would consider using the [name]Maeve[/name] spellling.

the meaning doesn’t bother me at all, the [name]History[/name] behind the name is more important to me

[name]Maeve[/name] [name]Josephine[/name] is just stunning!

@kyemsma: thank you! [name]Josephine[/name] is after my great-grandmother which has made my grandpa (who WORSHIPPED his mother) soo happy. He thinks her name is [name]Mauve[/name] and asked me if he could call her [name]Josie[/name] instead because he doesn’t like [name]Mauve[/name]. I told him I didn’t like [name]Mauve[/name] either, which is why I didn’t name my baby it, but because he’s 88 years old he can call my baby whatever he wants lol

I’m not seeing how the meaning is bad. You’ve never heard anyone say “she’s intoxicating” or “her beauty is intoxicating”? It doesn’t mean she’s serving up drinks at the bar. It means she’s overwhelmingly attractive; that people are dumbfounded by how amazing she is.

I know most berries like it (or at least they suggest it constantly) but I really do not like it. I think the look of it is pretty but I don’t think the sound of it is appealing at all.

[name]Maeve[/name] [name]Josephine[/name] is absolutley gorgeous! :o

I adore [name]Maeve[/name], it’s just so pretty.
