Magdalen

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] berries! [name_f][/name_f] Been thinking about [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] quite a lot lately, would love to hear your thoughts on these questions!

[name_f][/name_f]
    [name_f][/name_f]
  1. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you prefer [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] or [name_f]Magdalene[/name_f]? [name_f][/name_f] How do you pronounce each?
  2. [name_f][/name_f]
  3. What nicknames do you like for her?
  4. [name_f][/name_f]
  5. What middles would you pair with her? [name_f][/name_f] I like [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] [name_f]Chloe[/name_f] and [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f], but since they’re already on my list I’m looking at other options.
  6. [name_f][/name_f]
  7. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you prefer Magdalen/Magdalene, or do you like [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], [name_f]Madelaine[/name_f], [name_f]Maddalena[/name_f], or [name_f]Madelief[/name_f] more? [name_f][/name_f] (I realize [name_f]Madelief[/name_f] isn’t related, it just feels similar enough in sound to lump her in.)
  8. [name_f][/name_f]
  9. What sort of names would you envision her sisters having?
  10. [name_f][/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]

Thanks, berries!

I like [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] a lot. I like it even more than [name_f]Magdalene[/name_f] or the others and I also like the other choices. All around likes.

  1. I pronounce Magdalen with the ā€œlin/luhnā€ sound of Evelyn and Magdalene with a stronger ā€œlennā€ā€™sound. I like both but prefer Magdalen.
  2. Leni or Lena - and even Dolly or Midge as a term of endearment at home (with Maggie also an option)
  3. Magdalen Chloe is so nice to say. I like Magdalen Adair, Magdalen Claudette, Magdalen Anouk, Magdalen Fleur, Magdalen Hazel, Magdalen Harlow or Magdalen Kitty.
  4. A few years ago I would have said Madeleine for sure. That’s because Magda as a nickname really put me right of Magdalen. Still would be my reason not to use it (ie if I lived somewhere where Magda inevitable). I love Madeleif but it - and Maddalena - don’t seem like names that would quite translate without some teasing/major confusion. They’d need to be middles only.
  5. Sisters: Ariadne, Victoria, Clothilde, Honor, Sabine, Florence, Beatrix, Cecilia, Isadora, Tamsin, Constance, and Anna-Christine.

  1. I prefer [name_f]Magdalene[/name_f] overall. I pronounce them both as MAG-duh-lehn.
  2. [name_f][/name_f]
  3. [name_f]Della[/name_f], [name_f]Meg[/name_f], [name_f]Leni[/name_f]
  4. [name_f][/name_f]
  5. Magdalen(e) [name_f]Hannah[/name_f], Magdalen(e) [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], Magdalen(e) [name_f]Zoe[/name_f], Magdalen(e) [name_f]Sofia[/name_f], Magdalen(e) [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], Magdalen(e) [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], Magdalen(e) [name_f]Stella[/name_f], Magdalen(e) [name_f]Claire[/name_f], Magdalen(e) [name_f]Eva[/name_f]
  6. [name_f][/name_f]
  7. Magdalen(e) is my favorite, but I also love [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] and [name_f]Maddalena[/name_f].
  8. [name_f][/name_f]
  9. Magdalen(e), [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], [name_f]Odette[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f], [name_f]Cecily[/name_f], Susanna(h),

  1. I think I prefer [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f], she just looks a little more streamlined and playful, while [name_f]Magdalene[/name_f] looks a little more romantice and elegant. I would pronounce [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] as mag-duh-lehn & [name_f]Magdalene[/name_f] as mag-duh-leen.
  2. [name_f][/name_f]
  3. [name_f]Leni[/name_f] is my favorite! But I also love the options of [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], [name_f]Meg[/name_f], [name_f]Della[/name_f] / [name_m]Dell[/name_m], [name_f]Maddie[/name_f], [name_f]Madge[/name_f], [name_f]Magda[/name_f], or even [name_f]Dolly[/name_f].
  4. [name_f][/name_f]
  5. [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f] is so pretty! I would suggest [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] [name_f]Clara[/name_f], [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] [name_f]Diana[/name_f], [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f] or [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] [name_f]Ruby[/name_f].
  6. [name_f][/name_f]
  7. Out of all your options, I’d rank them in this order (favorite to least favorite):
    [name_f][/name_f][name_f]Madelief[/name_f]
    [name_f][/name_f][name_f]Maddalena[/name_f]
    [name_f][/name_f][name_f]Magdalen[/name_f]
    [name_f][/name_f][name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] / [name_f]Madelaine[/name_f]
  8. [name_f][/name_f]
  9. For a sister, I’d choose: [name_f]Thessaly[/name_f], [name_f]Fenella[/name_f], [name_f]Rowenna[/name_f], or [name_f]Penrose[/name_f] – something grounded with familiar sounds, but also with a magical / forest-y vibe that’s not too popular.

I prefer [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- it looks more concise and distinctive [name_f][/name_f]- and appeared in a [name_m]Wilkie[/name_m] [name_f]Collins[/name_f] novel [name_f][/name_f]. I’d say [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] as Mag-duh-lehn [name_f][/name_f]- though the end sound could easily blend into more of a ā€˜luhn’. [name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Magdalene[/name_f] would be Mag-duh-layn [name_f][/name_f]- though I don’t think this is the legitimate pronunciation

I’ve been really enjoying [name_f]Madelaine[/name_f] so I might have to go with that, followed by [name_f]Madelief[/name_f]!

  1. [name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] has a more intuitive pronunciation, but it depends on what it’s paired with really.

    [name_f][/name_f]
  2. [name_f][/name_f]
  3. [name_f][/name_f]

    [name_f]Magda[/name_f], [name_f]Lennie[/name_f] / [name_f]Leni[/name_f], [name_f]Midge[/name_f], [name_f]Minnie[/name_f], [name_f]Meg[/name_f]

@Victory55[name_f][/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- thanks girl! [name_f][/name_f] I didn’t expect to like her so much, but [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] [name_f]Ruby[/name_f] has some real possibilities [name_f][/name_f]- when I write letters to the kiddos I sponsor in [name_m]South[/name_m] [name_f]America[/name_f], I always tell them they’re more precious than all the diamonds and rubies, and can definitely envision saying the same if I’m ever blessed with my own kiddos [name_f][/name_f] [name_f][/name_f] That’s a fun connection, and it could also honor my grandmother, since she had a similar sounding name (Ruth).

[name_f][/name_f]

@EloiseT[name_f][/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- thanks lady! [name_f][/name_f] I’m usually not a [name_f]Dolly[/name_f] person, I know a [name_f]Dolly[/name_f] and it really doesn’t seem to suit her for me at all lol, but I do like the idea of it as a term of endearment at home! [name_f][/name_f] Also love the idea of [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] as a sister for [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f].

[name_f][/name_f]

@VEL[name_f][/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] [name_f]Eva[/name_f] is sweet! [name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_f]Dagny[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f] ā€œEvaā€ is in my top 3 though so I try to stay away from [name_f]Eve[/name_f] variants, but love the idea of [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], [name_f]Odette[/name_f], and [name_f]Susanna[/name_f] with [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f].

[name_f][/name_f]

@Greyblue[name_f][/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- thanks girl! [name_f][/name_f] I think that’s why I asked about [name_f]Magdalene[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- it’s a leen ending in my head but I feel like I hear most people say something more like mag-da-len on here. [name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Mallie[/name_f] is interesting, are you saying it more like [name_f]Molly[/name_f] or like the beginning of [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m]? [name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Love[/name_f] the visuals I get from [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] [name_m]Sunrise[/name_m]! [name_f][/name_f] I really have been liking [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] Alba/Madelaine [name_f]Alba[/name_f], but I’m not as fond of [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] [name_f]Alba[/name_f]? [name_f][/name_f] I’m not sure why.

[name_f][/name_f]

@ceruleanstardust[name_f][/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- what a relief, lol [name_f][/name_f]- I was starting to wonder if it was clashing with my favorites since so few had been mentioned! [name_f][/name_f] But [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], [name_f]Isobel[/name_f], and [name_f]Liliana[/name_f] are on my list, so my confidence has been restored

I’m not sure I say it like either… like rhyming with [name_f]Hallie[/name_f], or [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] with an L instead of G sound [name_f][/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- it is possible that’s like one of the pronunciations you offered above and I’m just not realizing

[name_f][/name_f][name_f][/name_f]

Maybe it’s the Magdalen [name_m]Al[/name_m]ba bit? or it just feels [name_f][/name_f]- place-y [name_f][/name_f]- but I’m not sure why

[name_f][/name_f]

Oh, oof. [name_f][/name_f] Yes, to rhyme with [name_f]Hallie[/name_f] or [name_f]Allie[/name_f] is what I had been thinking. [name_f][/name_f] I’m rather fond of Mallie/Malley as a nn for [name_m]Malachi[/name_m], so ironically it doesn’t feel that feminine to me anymore? [name_f][/name_f] But it is nice in theory!

[name_f][/name_f]

And I actually think it’s the G in Magdalen… it makes it feel more complex than the sleek and sweet [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]. [name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] [name_f]Alba[/name_f] feels perfect; [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] [name_f]Alba[/name_f] feels like too much? [name_f][/name_f] It’s irrational, I know, but I blame it on my synesthesia. :joy::joy:

[name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] has been on my own list for well over a decade! I would have used her for my first daughter (who is 12) if my husband hadn’t vetoed her.

[name_f][/name_f]

I pronounce [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] and [name_f]Magdalene[/name_f] the same with a -lyn sound on the end.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Meg[/name_f] is my favorite nickname for her.

[name_f][/name_f]

Some combinations on my own list: [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] [name_f]Ruby[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f], [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] [name_f]Jubilee[/name_f], [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] [name_f]Mina[/name_f] [name_f]Belle[/name_f], [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] [name_f]Vesper[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]

[name_f][/name_f]

I would absolutely name her sisters [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] and [name_f]Jessamyn[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] existing daughters’ names are [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] and [name_f]Raven[/name_f], so I’ll throw those in too.

Thank you! [name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] in some capacity is rarely far from my radar [name_f][/name_f]- I’ve had [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f] [name_f]Elise[/name_f] and [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] Ava/Madeleine [name_f]Ava[/name_f] on my list in the past, and [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f] for a short stint a while back… [name_f][/name_f] love the redemptive story of [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Magdalene[/name_f] and all her variants are such beautiful names! [name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] [name_f]Ruby[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f] and [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] [name_f]Jubilee[/name_f] are amazing!
