My husband and I decided to call our daughter [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] as soon as we found out the gender - it just felt right. But we don’t like ANY of the more formal options ([name_f]Margaret[/name_f], [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f], [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f], etc.) except for [name_f]Margo[/name_f]/[name_f]Margot[/name_f]. Is it silly to name her [name_f]Margot[/name_f] but call her [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], since they are both technically nicknames? Should we just go with [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]? 4 weeks to go and we can’t decide. Any and all input would be appreciated!
I think it works (like Sadie as nickname for Sarah), but it does strike me as a little odd. Probably because [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] is the same length as [name_f]Margot[/name_f]. Are you sure you don’t just want to name her [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]? I know someone whose full name is [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], and from what I can see no one cares that she has no formal name. Oh, and have you looked at [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f]?
I don’t think it’s that weird. [name_f]Margo/name_f nn [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] is cute! People named [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] get called [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], I’m sure… and I bet people legally named [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] are called [name_f]Mags[/name_f] or something.
[name_f]Maggie[/name_f] definitely works for [name_f]Margo[/name_f] / [name_f]Margot[/name_f].
It wouldn’t bother me that both are diminutives or have the same length, since [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] sounds more like a nickname (-ie ending) anyways.
I think there’s enough Elizas running around who get the nn [name_f]Liz[/name_f], even though both are shorter forms of [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f].
Or Roses who get [name_f]Rosie[/name_f], even though it’s longer than the given name.
It’s a bit strange for the same reason you mentioned, but at the same time it give her a sleeker, more sophisticated option to use as an adult/professionally. I would go with [name_f]Margot[/name_f] nn [name_f]Maggie[/name_f].
I don’t find it weird but as you give the option of just calling her [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], then I would call her that. It seems like this is the name you love and while it is a nickname, it isn’t too cutesy to stand alone. If [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] is what you will call her mostly, then why trial over finding a more ‘formal’ name?
I would just use [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]. There are lots of people that choose that.
If you also really like [name_f]Margo[/name_f] and can imagine her as a [name_f]Margo[/name_f] as well as a [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], then I think it’s totally fine to use [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Margo[/name_f]. If you’re just doing it because you think people expect her to have a ‘full name’ for the nickname [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], but you really just want her to be [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], then name her [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]. Actress [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] [name_m]Smith[/name_m] is about a million years old and she’s known professionally as [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], so I think [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] can definitely carry her into adulthood.
I don’t think that’s weird at all.
[name_f]Margot[/name_f] is a great name and feels more professional than [name_f]Maggie[/name_f].
[name_f]Maggie[/name_f] works as a nn for [name_f]Margot[/name_f] and it’s adorable!
I say go for it.
[name_m]Just[/name_m] go with [name_f]Maggie[/name_f].
I love [name_f]Margo[/name_f], but they’re both short forms and I don’t think it’s necessary to use one as a nickname for the other. That seems ridiculous, actually. Plus you said that you’d already agreed on [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] - don’t second guess yourself! It’s a lovely name!
I love [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] - it would be on my list if it wasn’t for the sour political reference that’s still lingering in the UK from the 70s
Thanks everyone! Your responses seem fairly split, as we still are, but the extra input is definitely helpful.
To answer your original question, no it isn’t silly to use a nickname for a name that is the same length when both come from [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]. I actually don’t consider [name_f]Margot[/name_f] a nickname but rather a derivative. If you love [name_f]Margot[/name_f] itself then use it as the full name. However if you are considering [name_f]Margot[/name_f] only because you feel obligated to have a more formal name and you will never use it then don’t bother. I have a nick name as a full name and I prefer it over any of the possible formal names that could go with my name. I know people named (full name)[name_f]Mollie[/name_f], [name_f]Miri[/name_f], [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], [name_f]Amy[/name_f], [name_f]Callie[/name_f], [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] – all nicknames. Good luck!
I think it works fine. [name_m]Even[/name_m] in [name_m]French[/name_m] [name_f]Margot[/name_f] has long evolved into a separate name, just like [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Rita[/name_f], [name_f]Elsa[/name_f], [name_f]Ada[/name_f], etc. It’s also much more “adult” and professional-looking than [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], which is very obviously a nickname.
Have you considered [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f], [name_f]Magdalene[/name_f] or [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f]?
Maybe you could use the longer form of [name_f]Margot[/name_f] which is [name_f]Margaux[/name_f]? I don’t see any problem at all whether you decide to use [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] as a nn for [name_f]Margot[/name_f].
It’s not silly. Go for [name_f]Margot[/name_f]/[name_f]Margo[/name_f].
I say go for it.
I don’t think Nn’s necessarily have to be short, they can just be cutesy forms of a name.
I love the idea. I have [name_f]Margo/name_f nn [name_f]Meg[/name_f] on my list
I say go for it, but only if you actually love the name [name_f]Margo[/name_f]. Best of luck!
Check out the Nameberry blog a week or 2 ago about the name [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] and all variations.
And I think it would be fine to name her [name_f]Margot[/name_f] and call her [name_f]Maggie[/name_f].
I have a cousin named [name_f]Margot[/name_f] that has always gone by [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]. I love it.
I do really like [name_f]Margot[/name_f], especially for when she is an adult, I think it’s more sophisticated and serious. Not that [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] doesn’t seem adult enough. I think I’m struggling to think past the baby stage - to me, [name_f]Margot[/name_f] seems a little serious for a tiny baby, and we’ve been calling her [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] for the past 4 months.
At this point I think the “safe” choice for us is [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], and the ballsier choice is [name_f]Margot[/name_f]. We’ll see how we feel once we meet her.
Thanks again for all of the helpful input!!
