Magickal, Mystical, and Wintry names

It’s unusually cold and frosty where we are at the moment :snowflake: and that always makes me nostalgic for “the old country”, aka Finland, where I’m from originally!

I’m looking to add more names to my list that capture that feeling of nostalgia for me. They are magical and mystical but not in a grand, mythological way (like say [name_f]Athena[/name_f] or Guinevere). I’m talking about more of a homespun, kitchen magick kind of a feel (it reminds me of my late grandma teaching me how to use plantago major to stop bleeding after I fell down and scraped my knee) or trying to spot fairies and goblins in the shrubbery on long walks in the woods. They are also wintry and cool, although names that literally mean snow like [name_f]Lumi[/name_f] or winter like [name_f]Talvi[/name_f] don’t quite do it for me! They just have that arctic, Nordic feel. Other nature names fit, though - like my son’s name [name_u]Robin[/name_u] or botanical names like [name_u]Yarrow[/name_u] and Nettle.

Here’s a moodboard of what I have in mind:

And some other names on my list already:

[name_f]Hilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Agnes[/name_f]
[name_f]Elvi[/name_f]
[name_f]Frida[/name_f]
[name_f]Flora[/name_f]
[name_f]Agatha[/name_f]

[name_m]Magnus[/name_m]
[name_m]Otso[/name_m]
[name_m]Edvin[/name_m]
[name_m]Oskar[/name_m]
[name_m]Kasper[/name_m]
[name_u]Adrian[/name_u]

I would love to hear any names that evoke the feel I’ve described here for you, even if they are very different from my list! Also happy to hear any GP suggestions, this is just for fun. :evergreen_tree:

@Greyblue Thank you, [name_f]Grace[/name_f] - these are lovely. You’ve reminded me of my love for [name_u]Alva[/name_u], and I am also really drawn to [name_u]Sol[/name_u] (makes me think of winter sun and the solstice), [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], [name_f]Morven[/name_f], [name_m]Oren[/name_m], and [name_m]Eben[/name_m]. Also, Brosie is a new one for me, and I’m intrigued - do you happen to know where it comes from/what it means? :slightly_smiling_face:

@Gia.berry Thank you [name_f]Gia[/name_f] - even though I am familiar with a lot of these, getting a currated list from someone else is always inspiring! I’m going to be adding a lot of these to my notes app: I [name_f]Minta[/name_f] / [name_f]Minttu[/name_f], [name_f]Saga[/name_f], [name_f]Eliska[/name_f], [name_f]Ivalo[/name_f], [name_f]Elvira[/name_f], [name_f]Lucia[/name_f], [name_f]Idony[/name_f], [name_f]Alta[/name_f], [name_f]Iskra[/name_f], [name_m]Sylvan[/name_m], [name_m]Cosmo[/name_m], [name_m]Espen[/name_m], [name_m]Aksel[/name_m], [name_m]Feliks[/name_m], [name_m]Iskandar[/name_m] / [name_m]Skandar[/name_m] … they really give me that lovely wintry feel. :snowflake:

@Oblivious_octopus Thank you, [name_u]Ollie[/name_u] - I am excited to see Lumikukka. Although [name_f]Lumi[/name_f] has lost its shine to me due to its popularity in Finland, elaborations of it still sound beautiful to me, and Lumikukka is so playful and cute. [name_f]Gwenno[/name_f] is a new one to me, and I love how it makes [name_f]Gwen[/name_f] / [name_f]Gwenna[/name_f] are bit more cool and unexpected. [name_f]My[/name_f] other favoruties are [name_u]Galen[/name_u] (!!), [name_f]Isola[/name_f], [name_f]Clemensia[/name_f], Morwen, [name_u]Floris[/name_u], [name_m]Celio[/name_m] (I’ve never really gotten into [name_m]Elio[/name_m] but [name_m]Celio[/name_m] is amazing), and Lumo.

Ah, that make sense! It’s a lovely nickname for Ambrose.

@tallemaja These are fantastic, thank you Molly! I love that some of my favourite names like Elvira, Tove, Tuulikki, Saga, Lilias / Lilium, Hester, Aarni, Konstantin, Finlo, Nestor, and Valentin fit this aesthetic for you (also wow, you listed a lot of my favourites there - started typing them out and just kept going! you’ve absolutely nailed my style). I’ll be adding Elke, Elinbet, Lova, Myrna, Theda, Twila, Cosmo, and Willem to my list as well. :snowflake:

I don’t think [name_f]Sigrid[/name_f] has been mentioned-- I think it fits so well for the theme you are looking for. It has always gave me a very wintry feel, traveling through snowy woods, knitting by the fire, etc. It’s one of my favorites. :white_heart:

Here are some others that I think fit as well:

@camellia1 Oh, [name_f]Sigrid[/name_f] is a lovely one - it hasn’t been on my radar at all but I love the way you’ve described it. Definitely knitting by the fire. :yarn: :snowflake: I need to add it to my list! I’m also really drawn to [name_f]Ebba[/name_f], [name_f]Gilda[/name_f], [name_f]Iva[/name_f] (!!! it’s like a quirkier [name_u]Ivy[/name_u], which I also like but it is so popular), [name_f]Sohvi[/name_f], [name_m]Andres[/name_m], and [name_m]Ives[/name_m]. Thank you so much, [name_f]Meg[/name_f]. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

[name_f]Greta[/name_f]
[name_u]Louise[/name_u] - because it’s such a white name to me

@Sorceress I don’t actually mind [name_f]Phyllis[/name_f] being dated and love the meaning! However, even though they aren’t pronounced the same at all, visually it looks too much like the Finnish word pylly, meaning bottom, which completely ruins the otherwise lovely [name_f]Phyllis[/name_f] for me, sigh.

Anyway, I really like [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] / [name_m]Wilfrid[/name_m], [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f], [name_f]Martha[/name_f], [name_f]Idony[/name_f], and [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] - thank you!
