Magill

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]
Some help please.

I like the name Magill for a girl but my husband says it sounds made up.

He has a point I guess but I still love it! What do you think?

Where does it come from? Is it a family surname?

I’m not a fan of it, honestly. It just seems like a last name, and not one that works particularly well as a first name, at least for me. If I heard parents calling their daughter Magill, I would probably assume it was the modern’s maiden name or another significant family surname that they had used as a first name. If I saw a young girl with her friends being called Magill, I would probably think they were calling her by her last name instead of her first name.

Yes it is a surname. I like surnames for girls and thought it would be more original than [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] or [name_u]Taylor[/name_u].

Sorry I’m not a fan of Magill, I just don’t find the sound very pleasant.

Not a fan.

Sorry I don’t like it, it looks very made up

[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t like it. It looks like it could be McGill. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Magali[/name_f]?

It feels made up.

I dislike how it sounds when I say it, whether I say it ma-gill (as in fish gill) or mag-ill (mag being like the beginning of the word magic). Doesn’t feel attractive, especially for a girl.

It sounds like ‘my gill’…like she’s a fish or something…too weird.

There is a university in [name_m]Quebec[/name_m] called McGill so that is what I automatically thought of. I think the surname-as-first-name choice is richer if you choose a surname that is from your family tree or means something to you or your partner. I’m sure she’d get asked ‘Magill? Why did your parents choose that?’ all the time and it would be nice to arm her with a good story to tell, other than ‘my mom thought it sounded cool.’ I have a friend with a very unique name, after a very small town down south, and she is apologetic every time she explains it’s just a town her parents heard of, no she hasn’t ever been there, yup, it’s a strange choice <big sigh>.

If it helps - Our daughter’s name is [name_f]Mary[/name_f] Magilligan and her nickname is Magilly; she is named after her mother & great great Irish Aunt, and a coastal area in Northern [name_f]Ireland[/name_f] where her great grandmother was born. While the name may be unusual, it has significance in terms of her female family members and cultural history for us. The best advise I received when trying to choose a name was to pick something that also gave the child a sense of family and history and “roots” in the world but that also allowed her to grow into her own self. I think that was kind of what another person mentioned here. Now if [name_m]Rocky[/name_m] Racoon was playing on a jukebox the night you and your husband met, you’d have your story and name all settled… good luck with choosing.

Not spelled the same, but reminds me of McGill University in [name_f]Canada[/name_f].

Her name was Magill, and she called herself [name_f]Lil[/name_f],
But everyone knew her as [name_f]Nancy[/name_f].
Now she and her man, who called himself [name_m]Dan[/name_m],
Were in the next room at the hoe down.
[name_m]Rocky[/name_m] burst in, and grinning a grin,
He said, “[name_u]Danny[/name_u] boy, this is a showdown”.
But [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] was hot, he drew first and shot,
And [name_m]Rocky[/name_m] collapsed in the corner.

Now the doctor came in, stinking of gin,
And proceeded to lie on the table.
He said, “[name_m]Rocky[/name_m], you met your match”.
And [name_m]Rocky[/name_m] said, “[name_m]Doc[/name_m], it’s only a scratch.
And I’ll be better, I’ll be better, [name_m]Doc[/name_m], as soon as I am able”.

Now [name_m]Rocky[/name_m] Raccoon, he fell back in his room,
Only to find [name_m]Gideon[/name_m]'s Bible.
[name_m]Gideon[/name_m] checked out, and he left it, no doubt,
To help with good [name_m]Rocky[/name_m]'s revival.

[name_m]Rocky[/name_m] raccoon. Beatles fan?
:stuck_out_tongue:

I’m not a fan of it honestly. It doesn’t really sound or look appealing to me. Not sure if you’re pregnant or just looking at future names but I would suggest seeing what you like about the name specifically (the starting/ending letters, family connection, meaning, origin) and find names that may be similar but a bit more appealing
