Make it EDGY!

I need some help! I am majorly desensitized to names! for girls i like frilly but unusual (my top pick is [name]Sunday[/name]) For boys I want edgy and uncommon- but nothing is uncommon to me because im on here like an addict all of the time lol. So I am now lost.

Some considerations I have had that I have lost passion for or have been shot down by husband are

[name]Dax[/name]- is it different enough? or too short with my last name?
[name]Wilder[/name]- husband didnt like it
[name]Knox[/name]- my maiden name, but too common now
[name]Cash[/name]- is it redneck or cool?
Ledger- just not feeling that spark
[name]Jett[/name]- but my last name is white, kinda like [name]Jett[/name] Blacks opposite
[name]Tennessee[/name]- except I actually live there so not usable
[name]Memphis[/name]- Live too close to it
[name]Tennyson[/name]- Maybe a little too stuffy
[name]Shepard[/name]- Idk, husband doesnt love it and it may not have enough edge for me?
Hutch- Im not sure?

Ugh I just cant find the right name… any suggestions?

Ooh, now this is fun. I get that you want a southern rocker-cool vibe, and from looking at your choices you are really drawn to the letter X. I also happen to agree with your take on all of the names on your list-- they’re either not edgy enough or won’t work with your surname/ geography.

My proposal is to put together something zippy with an X alongside something that screams southern and unusual (like [name]Memphis[/name] & [name]Tennessee[/name]).

The X [name]Factor[/name]:

Anxo
[name]Bix[/name]
[name]Calix[/name]
[name]Dixon[/name]
Helix
[name]Huxley[/name]
[name]Lennox[/name]
[name]Lex[/name]
[name]Paxton[/name]
Roxby
[name]Tex[/name]
Wilcox

Southern:

[name]Montgomery[/name] ([name]Alabama[/name])
[name]Macon[/name] (GA)
Kingsport (TN)
[name]Tupelo[/name] (MS, blues association)
Decatur (GA)
Kocziusko (town in MS, very very cool namesake, tallest mountain in Australia)
Meridian (MS, also cartographic term)
Natchez (MS- famous for beautiful plantation houses)

Put them together-- [name]Lennox[/name] Meridian? [name]Macon[/name] [name]Huxley[/name]? [name]Bix[/name] Kocziusko? [name]Tupelo[/name] [name]Tex[/name]?

Here are my suggestions/free associations:

[name]Paxon[/name]/[name]Paxton[/name]/[name]Pax[/name] instead of [name]Dax[/name]?
[name]Revel[/name]
[name]Chance[/name]
[name]Corban[/name]
[name]Caliban[/name] (definitely a rogueish choice)
[name]Alasdair[/name] or [name]Darien[/name] with nn Dare
Drogo (it means beloved in one language and phantom in another)
[name]Thoreau[/name] instead of [name]Tennyson[/name]?
Jettison nn [name]Jett[/name]?
[name]Cassius[/name] nn [name]Cash[/name]?
[name]Ridge[/name]
[name]Sherwood[/name] ([name]Robin[/name] Hood’s foresty headquarters)

My favorite for you: Fawkes. Pronounced “fox” like the elusive, cunning animal. A surname as a first name, which you appear to favor. Means “falcon”, the fierce, swift bird of prey. And last but not least, there’s the edgy associations with [name]Guy[/name] Fawkes, the subversive anti-hero (or dastardly conspirator, depending upon your cultural associations!)

[name]Dax[/name], [name]Knox[/name], [name]Cash[/name], Hutch and [name]Jett[/name] remind me of
[name]Arlo[/name], [name]Birch[/name], [name]Clive[/name]/[name]Clyde[/name], [name]Drake[/name], Ender, [name]Fisk[/name], [name]Grove[/name], Helix, [name]Ivo[/name], [name]Jory[/name]/[name]Judd[/name], [name]Luc/name, [name]Maury[/name], [name]Nico[/name], [name]Oak[/name], [name]Penn[/name], [name]Quest[/name]/[name]Quill[/name], [name]Roarke[/name]/[name]Royce[/name], Skandar, [name]Tadhg[/name]/[name]Teague[/name], [name]Uri[/name], [name]Vaughn[/name], Wilkin (old nn for [name]William[/name]), [name]Zoltan[/name].

[name]Wilder[/name], Ledger and [name]Shepard[/name] remind me of:
[name]Adler[/name], [name]Bertram[/name] (nn [name]Bram[/name]/Bam), [name]Conrad[/name], [name]Deacon[/name], Elling, [name]Fraser[/name], [name]Griffith[/name]/[name]Gardener[/name], [name]Hallam[/name], [name]Irving[/name], [name]Justus[/name], [name]Kester[/name], [name]Linus[/name], [name]Magnus[/name]/[name]Mercer[/name] (nn Mero?), [name]Nowell[/name], Oisín, Penry/[name]Pascal[/name], [name]Quinlan[/name], [name]Roscoe[/name]/[name]Ramsey[/name], [name]Sayer[/name], [name]Thatcher[/name], [name]Umber[/name], [name]Verne[/name], [name]Walter[/name]/[name]Webber[/name], [name]Yancey[/name], [name]Zebedee[/name]

[name]Tennessee[/name], [name]Memphis[/name] and [name]Tennyson[/name] remind me of:
[name]Albion[/name], [name]Benedict[/name], [name]Cairo[/name], [name]Dickinson[/name], [name]Ellington[/name], Faramond, Govannon, [name]Hawthorne[/name] (nn [name]Hawk[/name]), [name]Ignatius[/name], [name]Jacoby[/name], [name]Kingsley[/name], Locksley, Merrimack, [name]Nicomedes[/name], [name]Octavian[/name], [name]Peregrine[/name], [name]Redmond[/name], [name]Sigmund[/name], [name]Thackeray[/name]/Trevelyan, [name]Ulysses[/name], [name]Valdemar[/name], [name]Wellington[/name], [name]Yarrow[/name], [name]Zephyr[/name].

Here’s some names I consider edgy:

[name]Huxley[/name]
[name]Zane[/name]
[name]Pax[/name]
[name]Blaise[/name]
[name]Xavier[/name]
[name]Zeke[/name]
[name]Phoenix[/name]
[name]Justice[/name]
[name]West[/name]
[name]Sterling[/name]
[name]Cyrus[/name]
[name]Drake[/name]
[name]Finch[/name]
[name]Fox[/name]
[name]Maverick[/name]
[name]Vance[/name]
[name]Vaughn[/name]
[name]Rex[/name]
[name]Kane[/name]
[name]Griffin[/name]
[name]Monroe[/name]
[name]Evander[/name]
[name]Rafferty[/name]
[name]Bowen[/name]
[name]Peregrine[/name]
[name]Grey[/name]
[name]Dante[/name]

[name]Byron[/name]
[name]Weston[/name]
[name]Whitman[/name]
[name]Carlton[/name]
[name]Clement[/name]
[name]Paris[/name]
[name]Ewan[/name]/[name]Euan[/name]
[name]Blake[/name]
[name]Ivo[/name]
[name]Sholto[/name]
[name]Seth[/name]
[name]Abner[/name]
[name]Darius[/name]

Okay sleepysessha
I am LOVING Fawkes… I had thought about [name]Fox[/name] but felt it was too short. I am shocked to come across a name I’ve never seen before! Kudos to you!! Of course my play-it-safe, way too conservative husband immediately vetoed it- but this name is making me think it’s time to tell him he has used up his last veto too bad for him!

I could never use a name he likes anyway bc they are far too plain and he is convinced all of my names will get our kid picked on… I’m a teacher, kids don’t get picked on for their names hardly at all anymore. I subbed for a girl named shandanna- the kids thought it was perfectly normal.

Somehow I must get through to him!

Here are some more ideas.

[name]Jett[/name] White is an awesome name!

Can you give us a few examples of your husband’s taste? Maybe we can find a happy medium!

I’m so glad you love Fawkes! I really felt that it was a good fit

Other suggestions along the same line (do you think any of these will be hubby-approved?):

[name]Lennox[/name] nn [name]Knox[/name]
[name]Felix[/name] [name]Hawthorne[/name] nn Fawkes
[name]Foster[/name] [name]Knox[/name] nn [name]Fox[/name]

Has anyone suggested [name]Lev[/name] or [name]Zev[/name]?
Some other edgy names that come to mind are:
[name]Dash[/name], [name]Nash[/name], [name]Ace[/name], [name]Eames[/name], [name]Hayes[/name], [name]Braun[/name]/Bronn, [name]Brom[/name], [name]Roan[/name], [name]Eben[/name]

[name]Ivor[/name], [name]Talon[/name], [name]Troy[/name]

you could have the nn [name]Dax[/name] from [name]David[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] (or a cooler “D” name)
appeases hubby and gives kid options

[name]How[/name] about Duritz?

Fawkes is pronounced more like ‘four-x’ than ‘fo-x’

[name]Ah[/name]. This must be the British English vs. American English quandary again. In AE, Fawkes and [name]Fox[/name] both rhyme with hawks or rocks…there is a subtle difference in the idea of the “aw” vs short “o” sound…but when spoken there’s no audible distinction.

If your SO won’t go for Fawkes, you could try him on [name]Zadok[/name]

hmm…since [name]Zadok[/name] doesn’t appear to be included in Nameberry- Zadok - Wikipedia

Interesting! When I see my Americans at [name]Christmas[/name] I think I’ll make them say ‘fawkes’ and ‘fox’ so I can hear the difference, lol.
