Mallory ...?

Hello! Hoping for some wisdom!

We’re expecting a girl in [name_f]September[/name_f]. We already have a daughter, [name_f]Meredith[/name_f] [name_f]Snow[/name_f] nn [name_f]Merry[/name_f].
We love that [name_f]Meredith[/name_f] is a name people have heard, but don’t usually know anyone else with. [name_f]Snow[/name_f] has a special meaning for us. Naming her was a breeze.

[name_f]Baby[/name_f] number 2 is proving much harder to name. We’ve gone back and forth a bit and think we have landed on [name_f]Mallory[/name_f].
We’re really struggling for a middle we love and which flows. We have a three syllable M surname so long middles or middles beginning with M are off the table. We would like another nature middle really but I have one name I love not fitting this. Because naming [name_f]Meredith[/name_f] was so easy, struggling to get baby’s name right is making me question [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] (but I am something of an expert over thinker…).

[name_f]My[/name_f] husband loves [name_f]Autumn[/name_f]. Also suggested [name_f]Rain[/name_f] which I do quite like but don’t think I love. I know it’s a bit wild, but I love [name_f]Sunshine[/name_f], it just makes me happy. A friend suggested [name_f]Sunny[/name_f] was a bit more usual but both names finishing with ‘ee’ sounds doesn’t work for me. I also love [name_f]Joy[/name_f] - not a nature name but makes me happy. Not that he doesn’t care, but I think my husband wants my seemingly endless debating to actually end haha.

So please please tell me:

Which work best?

  • [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Autumn[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Rain[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Sunshine[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f]

Other ideas?

Is the struggle a sign it’s the wrong first name?

We’re in the UK if that helps at all.

Thank you! :purple_heart:

I like Mallory - it’s a warm and comforting name, if a little low energy and reserved.

I think Mallory Autumn or Mallory Joy would sound best with an M three syllable last. I find it quite awkward to get to Rain with the R’s being close together - and I think Rain might be too ominous and downbeat with the “unfortunate” meaning of Mallory. Sunshine is obviously the opposite but it feels slightly tricky getting from Sunshine to the last name? It would be my second choice if this isn’t an issue once your actual last name in play (I’m obv just making a last name up).

How about:

Mallory Primrose
Mallory Fleur
Mallory Starling
Mallory Hope
Mallory Whimsy
Mallory Skye (could be a sweet mirror to sister’s name)
Mallory Lark
Mallory Fern
Mallory Dawn
Mallory Pearl
Mallory Haven
Mallory Taffeta
Mallory Vesper (maybe too dark!?)

Or maybe one of these that I think also go with Meredith and have a similar vibe to Mallory (and if it were me, I would possibly choose because I don’t love matching starting letters for siblings - obv a personal choice and I’d of course ignore and go for a repeat letter if I absolutely adored the name):

Valerie (I love Valerie!)
Claudia (a fave of mine)
Tabitha
Harriet
Tallulah
Serena
Heather
Lydia
Cecily
Adelaide
Paloma
Ingrid
Rosemary
Evangeline
Antonia
Phoebe
Frances/Francine
Verity
Romilly
Delaney
Pomeline

Or for an M name:

Marceline
Marsali
Marguerite
Marianne (too close to Meredith?)

[name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Rain[/name_f]

Thank you so much for your input! I also like [name_f]Joy[/name_f] for balancing out Mallory’s meaning. I’m pretending it just doesn’t have a meaning haha.

I will definitely be putting some of those suggestions across! I had considered [name_f]Hope[/name_f], but my husband works with teens in not great situations, so certain names get a bit tainted for him and he has been working with a [name_f]Hope[/name_f] so I didn’t suggest it.

[name_f]Dawn[/name_f] is my sister’s middle, but she doesn’t like it. We did have [name_f]Fawn[/name_f] on a list though.

I think I’ll pop [name_f]Hope[/name_f], [name_f]Primrose[/name_f], [name_f]Skye[/name_f] and [name_f]Whimsy[/name_f] (adorable) on a list and see if they stick! Thank you for the suggestions!

I did debate the both begining with M issue but we felt the rest of the name didn’t sound similar so was okay. A couple of your suggestions were on my long list so I think you get my style. I love [name_f]Valerie[/name_f] too in theory, but I just don’t like [name_m]Val[/name_m] and feel it would end up there. Our other top contenders were [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f], [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] (nn Maggie) and [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] (nn Bea) xx

I know what you mean about Val - it’s not pretty, it would be Vali for me, if I ever had a Valerie. I also get the Hope thing - funnily daughter’s, one of my daughter’s buddies is a Hope and she’s adorable but very shouty and almost constantly scrolling and eye rolling (not what you expect with the name ).

I thought of Lorelei for the list I gave but somehow forgot. I also meant to put Ramona nn Romy on there. Felicity would work too but I don’t love the nicknames.

Meanwhile, Beatrice is almost the same to say as Meredith (rhythm wise) but I get Bea would make it distinct. Magnolia is stunning but I do like the casual charm of Mallory.

I don’t think the meaning of Mallory matters too much - would still use - but I think if you’re using a word name for a middle, it makes it more likely your kid will notice it - eg Mallory Rain - and compare to sister, and possibly get teen angsty about it. I’d want something uplifting in there for sure. :man_fairy: more I think about it, Mallory Sunshine would be my pick!

[name_f]Meredith[/name_f] [name_f]Snow[/name_f] is gorgeous!!

[name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Sunshine[/name_f] is lovely - I knew a Sunshine!!

[name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f] is nice too! I think it’s kind of fun with the meaning of [name_f]Mallory[/name_f].

[name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] is nice - kind of cosy!

[name_f]Cassidy[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f]
[name_f]Kelsey[/name_f] [name_f]Autumn[/name_f]

[name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Sunshine[/name_f] is adorable

Meredith snow is adorable!

I love the name Mallory Rain(e) nn Lori

Here are some ideas inspired by nature elements
Mallory Frost
Mallory Dew
Mallory Wren
Mallory Brynn
Mallory Fleur
Mallory Sky(e)
Mallory Ellora
Mallory Star

I love that Meredith and Mallory are 3 syllables and then Meredith’s middle name is one so I thought of the one syllable for Mallory — joy or rain maybe also sun or fall
I also think Mallory Mae or Mallory meadow flow nicely if you consider double m’s

Congratulations on your new baby girl! I hope you find a name you love

Maybe [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Rae[/name_f]? For “rae” of [name_f]Sunshine[/name_f]?

For what it’s worth, [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] gives more mid 2000s vibes whereas [name_f]Meredith[/name_f] gives more timeless, classic vibes but that’s just my opinion.

A few other M names if you want to consider something other than [name_f]Mallory[/name_f]:

[name_f]Merewen[/name_f]
[name_f]Marietta[/name_f]
[name_f]Marisol[/name_f]
[name_f]Madeline[/name_f]
[name_f]Melanie[/name_f]
[name_f]Miriam[/name_f]
[name_f]Mirielle[/name_f]

Hopefully this helps

In my village there is a two year old [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] and I really love her name! [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] is just so sunny and warm such a lovely underused vintage name.

Looking at your names my thoughts are

[name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] ~ majestic, sparkly and fun. A gorgeous name that evokes really lovely autumnal imagery surrounding fireworks night, bonfires and pumpkins. [name_m]Perfect[/name_m] for a baby born on the cusp of autumn. But lacks the unexpected feel of [name_f]Snow[/name_f].

[name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Rain[/name_f] ~ I do like [name_f]Rain[/name_f] but she feels a little themed with sister [name_f]Meredith[/name_f] [name_f]Snow[/name_f]

[name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Sunshine[/name_f] ~ absolutely love! [name_f]Sunshine[/name_f] is just such a joyous, happy, carefree name that feels perfect with [name_f]Mallory[/name_f]. Yes of course it is a little themed with [name_f]Meredith[/name_f] [name_f]Snow[/name_f] but somehow less so then [name_f]Rain[/name_f]. Also I just love [name_f]Sunshine[/name_f] and I love that you love [name_f]Sunshine[/name_f]. Also [name_f]Sunshine[/name_f] feels as unexpected as [name_f]Snow[/name_f] which is fun.

[name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f] ~ [name_f]Joy[/name_f] is a lovely warm vintage name that of course radiates happiness. [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f] has a very lyrical sound.

I love them all really but my least favourite is [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Rain[/name_f] and my favourite is [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Sunshine[/name_f] :sun_with_face:

You’ve had lovely suggestions so count any repeats as me being in agreement with the berries

[name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_m]Penrose[/name_m]

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps

I love the sound of [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] but the meaning puts me off a bit…paired with [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] or [name_f]Sunshine[/name_f] (love these names!) the meaning would keep me from using them together.

To honor a [name_f]Dawn[/name_f] maybe [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] or [name_f]Lucia[/name_f]?

[name_f]Meredith[/name_f] [name_f]Snow[/name_f] is absolutely stunning! [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] is so lovely with [name_f]Meredith[/name_f] as well. [name_f]Love[/name_f] the suggestion of [name_f]Marceline[/name_f]

I actually like [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Sunshine[/name_f] the best! She gives warmth and freespirited vibes to [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] which I love (Mallory [name_f]Joy[/name_f] is probably my second favorite).

A few other ideas:

[name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Lake[/name_f]
[name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Wren[/name_f]
[name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Starling[/name_f]
[name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Lark[/name_f]
[name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Bay[/name_f]
[name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_m]Harbor[/name_m]
[name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Zinnia[/name_f]
[name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]

I don’t think the struggle has to mean that [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] isn’t the one - the naming experience just won’t be the same for all babies! If [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] is clicking, I think it’s a lovely name with some sweet nn options (my favorite is [name_f]Lola[/name_f], but I think Mallie/Rora/Rory/Allie are all sweet too), and I always found it very likable; not flashy but still sweet and I think [name_f]Meredith[/name_f] and [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] go very well together.

But if you do want other ideas, what about:

[name_f]Audrey[/name_f] (the one little [name_f]Meredith[/name_f] I know has a big sister named [name_f]Audrey[/name_f], so this feels like a natural pair for me)
[name_f]Julia[/name_f]
Teresa/Theresa
[name_f]Erin[/name_f]
Claire/Clare (although I know this is more dated in the UK)
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f]
[name_f]Nadia[/name_f]
[name_f]Katharine[/name_f]
Amada/Amanda
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f]
[name_f]Giselle[/name_f]
[name_f]Elise[/name_f]
[name_f]Fiona[/name_f]

Good luck!

Meredith Snow is perfect! Mallory Sunshine is about as fitting a sister name as you could conjure, while matchy for my taste, I find nothing wrong with the combo as far as flow, style.

The -ry of Mallory going into Rain isn’t as nice a flow. Mallory Joy (I do love Joy and actually would favor a less…weathery mn for you this time that still brings about the same vibe so as to be distinctive rather than cute) doesn’t work great for me because I don’t like the double -y endings.

Mallory Autumn is a perfectly good combo as far as style, flow, but I like for the second sibling’s name to step the pair up a notch. This one sounds slightly like you settled. Surely, if you’re the overthinker you say you are, you want the combo to convey the message that you thought enough. lol

To answer your question about whether this means you don’t have the right first name, I say surely that’s not it. You like the name and it will be like Meredith that it’s recognizable without being overdone. I’m not an advocate of changing the first name because of the mn

So, of your list, I could do Mallory Sunshine and feel quite good about it, given your taste. Plus, you really like it!

Looking for an upbeat, interesting, nature-y middle name that doesn’t feel nearly as matchy as Meredith Snow and Mallory Sunshine, I’m taken with:

Mallory Vale, Mallory Sorrel, Mallory Alden, Mallory Ayla, Mallory Lark, Mallory Song, Mallory Sunflower, Mallory Lake, Mallory Birch, Mallory Cedar

I don’t favor changing Mallory because you seem to like it. Ideas are fun to play with; hope it’s not confusing!

Meredith Snow and
Story Meadow (I love for middle names and last names to share the first letter; it’s generally so good for flow.
Goldie Autumn
Sunny Annika
Nadia Joy
Natalie Sunshine

[name_m]Just[/name_m] here to say [name_f]Meredith[/name_f] [name_f]Snow[/name_f] is a gorgeous name! I love [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Sunshine[/name_f] and [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f] for baby girl! [name_f]Sunshine[/name_f] could also be a nod to [name_f]Dawn[/name_f] if you’re looking for one. Good luck! You truly can’t go wrong with any of your options

I love [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Sunshine[/name_f]! It’s the perfect amount of surprise and fun for a middle name. The flow is lovely as well.

[name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Sunshine[/name_f] is so sweet! That’s definitely my favorite from the bunch. It flows the best by far syllable wise & doesn’t repeat any ‘m’ or ‘r’ sounds (I’m overly picky about that!) [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] is a great first name choice. It gives me similar vibes as Meredith; strong & confident & feminine. Well known but not over done. A little bit cuddly & a little bit sporty.

[name_f]Mallory[/name_f] Tulip-that’s a brave one, but kind of cute, right?

[name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Wynn[/name_f]

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps.

[name_f]My[/name_f] vote has to go to [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] Sunshine!!
[name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Sunshine[/name_f] flows so well!

I’m so happy to see someone considering [name_f]Sunshine[/name_f] for their baby. [name_f]Sunshine[/name_f] sounds so beautiful, joyful, bright, colorful and meaningful. It’s absolutely magical. A marvelous middle name.
[name_f]Joy[/name_f], [name_f]Rain[/name_f] and [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] are gorgeous. I adore word names and these three options are beautiful. However, [name_f]Sunshine[/name_f] can easily outshine them thanks to its meaning and associations.

[name_f]My[/name_f] second choice would be [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Autumn[/name_f]. It sounds great and has a nice flow.
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] [name_f]Sunshine[/name_f] “Bea” would be stunning, too! Very poetic and cheerful.
I would like to leave [name_f]Miriam[/name_f], [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] and [name_f]Mirabel[/name_f] as first name suggestions, just in case you still want to consider something else.

Your first daughter has a lovely name, by the way.
