I have read all the lists about animal names for children, and the girl’s side of the spectrum , there are plenty of names for girls relating to birds, but names relating to mammals are lacking. That makes me think about an article about the nature of birds in our culture.
I am curious as to whether anyone else has other ideas for names of mammals or names relating to mammals that are out there. Here are a few of my favorite animal names:
[name]Aja/name
[name]Ursula/name
[name]Bernadette[/name]( translates to “brave as a bear”)
[name]Delphine[/name] (dolphin)
[name]Both[/name] meanings are correct. From Behindthename.com: "[name]Delphi[/name] was a city in ancient Greece, the name of which is possibly related to Greek δελφις (delphis) “dolphin”. " Wikdipedia also notes that, "The name Delphoi comes from the same root as δελφ”ς delphys, “womb” and may indicate archaic veneration of [name]Gaia[/name], Grandmother [name]Earth[/name], and the [name]Earth[/name] [name]Goddess[/name] at the site. [name]Apollo[/name] is connected with the site by his epithet Δελφίνιος Delphinios, “the Delphinian”. The epithet is connected with dolphins (Greek δελφίς,-ῖνος) in the Homeric Hymn to [name]Apollo[/name] (line 400), recounting the legend of how [name]Apollo[/name] first came to [name]Delphi[/name] in the shape of a dolphin, carrying Cretan priests on his back.
