Marcellus - Usable?

The more I hear this name the more I love it. I probably should stick with the simpler [name_m]Marcel[/name_m], but something about [name_m]Marcellus[/name_m] draws me in. I don’t quite like [name_m]Marcel[/name_m] as much as I love [name_m]Marcellus[/name_m].

What are your honest thoughts and opinions on it?
Middle name or first name?

It’s usable, but I think it’s more wearable as a middle name.

I think [name_m]Marcellus[/name_m] is handsome, as long as he has a nickname. It’s a lot of name for a little boy. I have a good friend [name_m]Marcelo[/name_m] which I also love.

If parents are choosing [name_m]Atticus[/name_m], [name_m]Titus[/name_m], [name_m]Maximus[/name_m] and [name_m]Augustus[/name_m], why would [name_m]Marcellus[/name_m] NOT be usable? I think ancient [name_m]Roman[/name_m] names are quite wonderful. If you use [name_m]Marcellus[/name_m] as a first name, I would pick a short, one-syllable mn (eg. [name_m]Marcellus[/name_m] [name_u]Jude[/name_u]) and of course the opposite strategy if [name_m]Marcellus[/name_m] goes in the middle spot ([name_u]Jude[/name_u] [name_m]Marcellus[/name_m]).

I definitely think that [name_m]Marcellus[/name_m] is usable. That the only thing I associate the name with is Pulp Fiction/[name_m]Marcellus[/name_m] [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] is another matter, lol. I generally prefer [name_m]Marcel[/name_m] (and I know one of these as well), but that’s just personal preference.

[name_m]How[/name_m] are you pronouncing it? I know one [name_m]Marcelo[/name_m] (mahr-CHEH-loh), so would it be mah-CHEH-lus or mah-SEH-lus? I love it both ways, and also the suggestion of [name_m]Marcellus[/name_m] [name_u]Jude[/name_u]. What an incredible name!

Unfortunately, I can only think “what does [name_m]Marcellus[/name_m] [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] look like!”

I pronounce it mar-SEL-us because that the way I heard it on the tv show The Originals. Is that incorrect?

I would assume the pronunciation of [name_f]Mar[/name_f]-Cell-us, so I’m guessing we are right! I like it. I’m a little biased against [name_m]Marcel[/name_m] because I watch Top Chef and there was a character [name_m]Marcel[/name_m] who was arrogant and pretty unlikeable.

[name_m]Marcellus[/name_m] is pronounced as “mar-SELL-us”.

[name_m]Marcello[/name_m] (Italian) = “mahr-[name_m]CHAY[/name_m]-loh”
[name_m]Marcelo[/name_m] (Spanish - South American) = "mar-[name_m]SAY[/name_m]-loh

Thanks [name_u]Mischa[/name_u]!

I agree about using it with one syllable names. If I end up using [name_m]Marcellus[/name_m] it’d be in the first middle spot.
For example: [name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Marcellus[/name_m] [name_u]Jude[/name_u]

[name_m]Marcellus[/name_m]? Totally! First, definitely.

(Think [name_m]Richard[/name_m] [name_m]Burton[/name_m]- a [name_m]Roman[/name_m] centurion Tribune, by the name of [name_m]Marcellus[/name_m] Galieo - in ‘The [name_m]Robe[/name_m]’. Believe me, opinions change instantly once you see it!!)

I agree, why wouldn’t [name_m]Marcellus[/name_m] be usable? It’s unique but with familiar enough sounds for people to wrap their heads around, has tons of history but still seems fresh (to me- I guess because I’ve never known one), sounds strong but not butt-kicking macho. As in, strong yet refined, if that makes sense? [name_m]Marcellus[/name_m] always makes me think of the character in [name_m]Hamlet[/name_m]- he was just either a guard or a soldier though, not a really strong association for most I should think.

@iwillpraise- Looked up pics of [name_m]Richard[/name_m] [name_m]Burton[/name_m] in that movie… haven’t seen it, but yes it does look epic!

Absolutely! What a find. I agree with bonfireazalea about it having sufficient familiar sounds - [name_m]Marcel[/name_m] is a name I love, and there are plenty of [name_m]Lucas[/name_m]’, [name_m]Marcus[/name_m]’ or even [name_m]Atticus[/name_m]’ about for people to be used to an -us ending.
