Marian

So I just suggested this name to dh and I’m stunned that he said he thought it was sweet. Most names I like dh thinks are too old ladyish. Our last name is Tys0n. What does everyone think? Siblings are listed in my siggy. Our previous girl choice had been [name]Grace[/name] with [name]Lucy[/name] as a runner up.

While [name]Marion[/name] would be my preferred spelling (love that name!), I think [name]Marian[/name] is sweet. A little [name]Marian[/name] would fit in perfectly with your crew.

Why do you prefer [name]Marion[/name]? I grew up outside D.C. so I associate it with their former mayor [name]Marion[/name] [name]Barry[/name].

I love [name]Marian[/name]! It’s gorgeous, and I’ve always been absolutely in love with [name]Robin[/name] Hood so it makes me think of Maid [name]Marian[/name] - good association!

Ahh, I can see how you’d associate [name]Marion[/name] with the mayor since you grew up outside of D.C. I personally associate it with [name]Marion[/name] [name]Davies[/name], the silent movie actress. However, I admit my name taste is stuck somewhere between 1910 and 1930, so it could be that it looks more like an old lady name than [name]Marian[/name] (which is the highest compliment for me, personally). Most of my name spelling preferences, however, are based on abstract reasoning that really boils down to “just 'cos.”

Have you thought of any middle names for [name]Marian[/name]?

If you don’t mind [name]Mark[/name] and [name]Marian[/name] beginning with “[name]Mar[/name]”, I think it’s a soft and feminine name. I do prefer [name]Grace[/name] and [name]Lucy[/name]. Have you considered [name]Anne[/name]/[name]Anna[/name], [name]Ruth[/name], [name]Rose[/name], [name]Sarah[/name], [name]Diana[/name], [name]Eve[/name]/[name]Eva[/name], [name]Laura[/name], [name]Leah[/name], [name]Rachel[/name], Miriam or just [name]Mary[/name]?

The way I say [name]Marian[/name] kind of sounds similar to your surname. If you are okay with that, by all means it is a very lovely choice.

I love [name]Marian[/name]! I prefer the -an spelling to the -on spelling. It definitely goes well with your last name and your other kids’ name. If you aren’t sold on [name]Marian[/name], would about [name]Miriam[/name]?

I adore it. Works so well with your other children’s names.

I like [name]Marion[/name] with an O. [name]Marion[/name] Tys0n is lovely for the repeated -on endings. I think [name]Marion[/name] Cotillard has upped the glamour factor of this old-lady name. I imagine [name]Marian[/name] to have a brighter, higher sound, and [name]Marion[/name] to have a slightly lower, deeper sound. The pronunciation isn’t really different, but I think the O spelling gives the name a more unusual, sophisticated quality.

I love it! I think it goes very well with your other children’s names.

The two “[name]Mar[/name]” beginnings is what ruled [name]Mary[/name] out for me. I’m not sure if [name]Mark[/name] and [name]Marian[/name] is too close. I’ll think on it.

I do like [name]Anne[/name]/[name]Anna[/name] but dh has his heart set on [name]Andrew[/name] for a future boy so I’m saving the “An” starting sound for [name]Andrew[/name]. Plus I’m not huge into nicknames and dh would call her [name]Annie[/name]. [name]Ruth[/name], [name]Sarah[/name], and [name]Leah[/name] are all favorites of mine as well. My name is [name]Laura[/name].

Mm… I like [name]Ruth[/name] and [name]Marion[/name] together. [name]Marion[/name] [name]Ruth[/name] or [name]Ruth[/name] [name]Marion[/name]

I love [name]Marian[/name], and I do wish it would make a comeback. I think it’s a glamorous name, and the -an vowel (as opposed to -on in [name]Marion[/name]) softens and feminizes the name even more. I think of [name]Robin[/name] Hood, sure. [Also there is a term used almost exclusively by theologians, ‘[name]Marian[/name],’ to describe the theology of [name]Mary[/name]. You’ll hear it in academic settings only, as an adjective, i.e. ‘the [name]Marian[/name] Controversy.’]

I too think it fits well with your other children. I hope you use it.

I love [name]Marian[/name]. It’s on my short list.

I love both [name]Marian[/name] and [name]Marion[/name]. I don’t think that having [name]Mark[/name] and [name]Marian[/name] as siblings is a problem. [name]Do[/name] you like [name]Marianne[/name] or [name]Marianna[/name]? I’m a sucker for most variations of [name]Mary[/name] (my DD is [name]Miriam[/name]). Your kids all have great names and [name]Andrew[/name] would be a good addition as well if you have a boy.

[name]Love[/name] it, especially in your family. I think [name]Marian[/name] has the gravitas (? perhaps not the right word, I mean this very positively) to match that of [name]Clare[/name] and [name]Katherine[/name] in a way that [name]Lucy[/name] and [name]Grace[/name] don’t quite.

I prefer [name]Marion[/name] and [name]Marianne[/name] to [name]Marian[/name], but that’s mostly arbitrary; [name]Marion[/name] is the version used in my family. [name]Marian[/name] does also look like an adjective to me, but I don’t think that’s a huge issue. [name]Marion[/name] is almost never a masculine name in [name]Britain[/name] or [name]Canada[/name] (I was really surprised when I discovered the extent to which [name]Marion[/name] was/is used on males in the US- I think the masculine use of this name is exclusively American? Does anyone else have any insight on that?), so my perception probably differs from that of the people she would meet every day  That said, I think most people will think of [name]Marion[/name] Cotillard before [name]John[/name] [name]Wayne[/name], and [name]Marion[/name] hasn’t been in the male top 1000 for 20 years.

Hmm…have just looked up the numbers and discovered that there were 111 female Marions born in the US, versus 100 males. That’s pretty even! Perhaps [name]Marian[/name] is the best option in the US!

[name]Marion[/name] is my grandmother’s name and also my middle name so I am biased but I think it’s beautiful. It goes very nicely w/ your other children, classic and elegant. I do also love [name]Lucy[/name].

I have a huge soft spot for [name]Marian[/name]! I think it is such a beautiful and soft name. I think it fits wonderfully with your other children’s names as well. I do love your choice of [name]Grace[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] though too, it is very beautiful.
