Maribel vs Mirabelle vs Marielle

My grandmother’s name is [name]Mary[/name]. I would like to use [name]Mari[/name]/[name]Mary[/name] to honor her.

BUT, I love [name]Mirabelle[/name]. So, two questions:

  1. Can [name]Mira[/name]/[name]Mirabelle[/name] honor a [name]Mary[/name]?
  2. [name]Marielle[/name] vs [name]Maribel[/name] vs [name]Mirabelle[/name]?

[name]Violet[/name] would be used as a middle name.

[name]Maribelle[/name] [name]Violet[/name]/[name]Maribel[/name] [name]Violet[/name]
[name]Marielle[/name] [name]Violet[/name]
[name]Mirabelle[/name] [name]Violet[/name]

[name]Marielle[/name] is my favorite. [name]Mirabel[/name] is a stretch if you want people to make the connection but if it honors her to you than go right ahead. I fo think if you want people to know it’s for [name]Mary[/name] you’ll have to explain it.

Other [name]Mary[/name] names

[name]Marigold[/name]
[name]Marietta[/name]
[name]Mariana[/name]
[name]Maren[/name]
[name]Marina[/name]
Merit
[name]Mara[/name]
[name]Marilyn[/name]
[name]Marisa[/name]
[name]Marissa[/name]
[name]Mariska[/name]
[name]Marika[/name]
Marida
[name]Maria[/name]
[name]Marie[/name]

Would [name]Marigold[/name] [name]Violet[/name] be too much? I was thinking about [name]Marigold[/name] [name]Violet[/name], but I think it may be too flowery. I also like [name]Marianne[/name]/[name]Mariana[/name] and [name]Marilyn[/name] (never would have thought of that, and [name]Marilyn[/name] [name]Monroe[/name] was cool).

I like [name]Marilla[/name] for honoring a [name]Mary[/name].

As a [name]Mary[/name] myself, I don’t think any of those names really honor a [name]Mary[/name]. I like [name]Maybelle[/name] more than [name]Mirabelle[/name]… makes me think of [name]Maybelle[/name] Merriweather in Gone With the Wind. But again, no connection to [name]Mary[/name].

I like [name]Mirabelle[/name] the best, but I like the nn [name]Mari[/name] (mah-ree) more than [name]Mira[/name]/[name]Miri[/name] (although [name]Miri[/name] is adorable!). [name]Mirabelle[/name] [name]Violet[/name] would be my favorite (although I think it is a pretty big stretch to honor a [name]Mary[/name] this way), followed by [name]Marielle[/name] [name]Violet[/name], nn [name]Mari[/name].

Good luck!

I really like both [name]Marigold[/name] and [name]Violet[/name], but not together.

I really love [name]Mirabel[/name] more, but think [name]Maribel[/name] would be closer to honouring a [name]Mary[/name]?

I like [name]Rosemary[/name] a lot, but wouldn’t double-barrel botanicals with [name]Violet[/name].

Have you thought about [name]Mae[/name]/[name]May[/name], or [name]Molly[/name]? [name]Both[/name] are traditionally short forms of [name]Mary[/name]. Though honestly I don’t mind [name]Mary[/name] and would think about using it, itself, [name]Mary[/name] [name]Violet[/name] is sweet and not trendy but not harsh sounding.

I also like [name]Mirabelle[/name] best, but would never make the connection to [name]Mary[/name]. Of the suggestions listed so far, I’m fond of [name]Marilla[/name], [name]Marilyn[/name], [name]Maribel[/name], [name]Marina[/name] and [name]Mariska[/name].

[name]Miriam[/name] and Mariamne could be options?

I think all these honor [name]Mary[/name]. [name]Mira[/name] is my favorite out of your list. [name]Marielle[/name] is nice too. What about [name]Marian[/name]?

I vote for [name]Marielle[/name] because it is my name and I love it. These names all honor [name]Mary[/name]. They are different forms of [name]Mary[/name].

[name]Mirabel[/name] [name]Violet[/name] is gorgeous and my favorite of your options. I love most [name]Mary[/name] variations 107 International Variations of Mary | Nameberry

  1. [name]Mirabelle[/name] can honor a [name]Mary[/name].

  2. I like:

[name]Mirabelle[/name]>[name]Mireille[/name]>[name]Mirabel[/name]>[name]Marielle[/name]

I think [name]Mirabelle[/name] [name]Violet[/name] or [name]Mireille[/name] [name]Violet[/name] sounds wonderful!

[name]Amaryllis[/name]/[name]Marilla[/name]

Variations of [name]Mary[/name]:

[name]Malia[/name] (Hawaiian variation of [name]Mary[/name])
[name]Maren[/name], [name]Maria[/name] (Latin form of [name]Mary[/name])
[name]Manette[/name], [name]Manon[/name], [name]Marian[/name], [name]Marie[/name], [name]Mariel[/name] (French variation of [name]Mary[/name])
[name]Maire[/name], [name]Maura[/name], [name]Maureen[/name], [name]Moira[/name] (Irish variation of [name]Mary[/name])
[name]Mairi[/name] (Scottish variation)
[name]Masha[/name] (Russian short form of [name]Mary[/name])
[name]Mitzi[/name] ([name]German[/name] diminuitive of [name]Maria[/name])

I think [name]Maribel[/name] [name]Violet[/name] is the prettiest. [name]Mirabel[/name]/[name]Mirabelle[/name], I feel, could easily be used to honor [name]Mary[/name] as well.

[name]Mirabel[/name] (spelt this way) is by far my favourite.

I meant this with no snark at all, but how does this honour [name]Mary[/name]? [name]Marianne[/name], [name]Marian[/name], [name]Mara[/name], even [name]Maribel[/name] at a stretch, I can see. But not [name]Mirabel[/name].

I’m a little confused by the ‘honouring’ thing on Nameberry in general. Unless the name is exactly the same, or a recognized variant/derivative, I usually think that the ‘honouree’ is not even going to get it.

Depends on the culture involved. My background mostly matches initials.

I really like both [name]Maribel[/name] and [name]Mirabel[/name]–though they are a little confusing when seen together.

I know a few people named [name]Maribel[/name], but in their case, it’s technically a nickname. Each of them has [name]Maria[/name] [name]Isabel[/name] on the birth certificate–the names are sort of smooshed together to get [name]Maribel[/name]. It is my understanding that this is common in Central [name]America[/name] and the Philippines. So, I do think [name]Maribel[/name] would honor someone named [name]Mary[/name].

To me, there are a couple of different ways one can be honored, either using the exact name or finding a variant or somthing very similar (in sound). [name]Marielle[/name] and [name]Maribelle[/name] have the same “[name]Mary[/name]” sound to it.

I like the name [name]Mary[/name], but I think [name]Mary[/name] alone is just too common.

Thank you SO much for this list! I appreciate it.

And to the other poster who mentioned [name]Miriam[/name], I have thought about it. I like the Biblical connection and find it very beautiful.

  1. Yes, [name]Mirabel[/name] could be way to honor [name]Mary[/name], but it’s big stretch.
  2. I like [name]Marielle[/name] more than [name]Mirabel[/name] and [name]Maribel[/name], but I think [name]Mariella[/name] [name]Violet[/name] sounds lovely.
