Marie and Joseph

[name_f]My[/name_f] grandmother on my father’s side passed away this past Friday and amid everything going on, her birth certificate was found and I was told something that I thought was really neat and interesting.

I’ve always known her name to be [name_f]Pauline[/name_f] [name_f]Geraldine[/name_f] but it turns out that her was actually [name_f]Marie[/name_f] [name_f]Pauline[/name_f] [name_f]Geraldine[/name_f] (two first names). [name_f]My[/name_f] dad said that back when she was born (1938) all the girls names were [name_f]Marie[/name_f] and then their name and all the boys names were [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] and then their name. So my grandmother was [name_f]Marie[/name_f] [name_f]Pauline[/name_f] her twin sister is [name_f]Marie[/name_f] [name_f]Jacqueline[/name_f] ([name_u]Jackie[/name_u]) and her other sister is [name_f]Marie[/name_f] [name_m]Cecil[/name_m] and her brothers were [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] [name_m]Raymond[/name_m], [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] [name_m]Paul[/name_m], and [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] [name_u]Tobie[/name_u].

He said that it was supposed to be after the Saints. That side of my family is close to being almost 100% [name_m]French[/name_m] (my grandmother’s whole family speaks [name_m]French[/name_m] very fluently). So I don’t know if it’s a time period thing or if it’s a [name_m]French[/name_m] thing.

Sorry for the long post, I just thought it was interesting and thought that some of you fellow Berries might think it was interesting too.

Funny I am Jakki and my sister is [name_f]Paula[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] middle name is [name_f]Maree[/name_f].

It’s definitely interesting! [name_f]My[/name_f] Italian teacher was named [name_f]Maria[/name_f], and her younger sister was named [name_f]Maria[/name_f] [name_f]Concetta[/name_f] (first name), but went by [name_f]Concetta[/name_f].

That is exactly like my mum’s half sisters: they are all Filipino and their first names are all [name_f]Maria[/name_f]. There are 5 of them too, but none of them go by their first name. Also, on my mother’s adoptive parents side, all the males’ first names is [name_m]Charles[/name_m], but a lot of them do actually do go by [name_m]Charles[/name_m], which is super confusing. A few of them double barrel it with their middle name though, but it doesn’t really help, because most of the middle names are [name_m]Peter[/name_m], after a particular ancestor, so there are about five [name_m]Charles[/name_m] [name_m]Peter[/name_m]'s running around at family gatherings, and all the males who haven’t married into the family are called [name_m]Charles[/name_m], so there are about 15-20 at gatherings. And they all have the same last name. [name_m]Le[/name_m] sigh. It is a great name though.

It just reminds me of [name_f]My[/name_f] Big Fat Greek Wedding, when the father introduces [name_m]Ian[/name_m] to the family: ‘[name_u]Nick[/name_u], [name_u]Nick[/name_u], [name_u]Nick[/name_u], [name_u]Nick[/name_u], [name_u]Nick[/name_u], [name_u]Nicky[/name_u], [name_u]Nico[/name_u], [name_u]Nicola[/name_u], [name_u]Nick[/name_u], [name_u]Nick[/name_u], [name_m]Nikolai[/name_m], [name_f]Nicolette[/name_f], [name_f]Nicoletta[/name_f], [name_u]Nicky[/name_u] and [name_u]Nick[/name_u].’ :).

Except with us it is: ‘[name_m]Charles[/name_m], [name_m]Charles[/name_m], [name_m]Charles[/name_m], [name_m]Charles[/name_m], [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], [name_m]Chuck[/name_m], [name_m]Chucky[/name_m], [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], [name_u]Lee[/name_u], [name_u]Arley[/name_u], [name_m]Charles[/name_m], [name_m]Charles[/name_m], [name_m]Charles[/name_m] [name_m]Peter[/name_m], [name_m]Charles[/name_m] [name_m]Peter[/name_m], [name_m]Charles[/name_m] [name_m]Peter[/name_m], [name_m]Charles[/name_m] [name_m]Peter[/name_m], [name_m]Charles[/name_m] [name_m]Peter[/name_m], [name_m]Peter[/name_m], Petie, [name_m]Pete[/name_m], [name_m]Charles[/name_m] [name_m]Pete[/name_m], [name_m]Charles[/name_m] Petie, [name_m]Charles[/name_m], [name_m]Charles[/name_m], [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] [name_m]Pete[/name_m] and [name_m]Charles[/name_m].’ :).

The [name_f]Marie[/name_f] and [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] thing is quite lovely though. My condolences for your loss.

The [name_f]Marie[/name_f] and [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] thing is quite lovely though.

I went to school, briefly, with a girl who was from a large family. All the girls were [name_f]Mary[/name_f] ________. She was [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f].

[name_f]Susan[/name_f]

Interesting. I have heard that the use of [name_f]Mary[/name_f]/[name_f]Marie[/name_f]/[name_f]Maria[/name_f] ____ for multiple daughters is relatively common in Catholic countries, at least in the past.

Many Catholic families follow the pattern that you’ve described. [name_f]Mary[/name_f]/[name_f]Marie[/name_f]/[name_f]Maria[/name_f] is chosen for girls to honour the Virgin [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] for boys. The children are usually called by their second names to avoid confusion. [name_f]My[/name_f] own mother was baptized [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f] [name_u]Clare[/name_u] but she’s always been known as just [name_f]Louise[/name_f] to everyone. Some cultures even use both names for one gender but that practice may be dying out (eg. [name_m]French[/name_m] female [name_f]Marie[/name_f] [name_m]Jos[/name_m]èphe, [name_m]German[/name_m] male [name_m]Josef[/name_m] [name_f]Maria[/name_f] etc…).

My condolences to you and your family on your loss.

I didn’t know it was a Catholic thing, but it definitely makes sense as my family is Catholic and my grandmother was a very religious woman.

I know someone from a small, very traditional and Catholic town in [name_m]Quebec[/name_m] where apparently ALL the boys were given the first name [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] and ALL the girls [name_f]Mary[/name_f]. Everyone went by their middle names. This man was born [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] [name_m]Denis[/name_m] SecondMiddle LastName, but was always called [name_m]Denis[/name_m]. When he went to university in a big city and the professor called him [name_m]Joseph[/name_m], the name on his legal documents, it took him awhile to realize he was being called. (He eventually changed his name to [name_m]Denis[/name_m] OriginalSecondMiddle [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] Lastname.) He’s in his 50s now though, so things may have changed.

It is like this in my family, too. Starting with my paternal great-granddad [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] [name_m]Charles[/name_m] Sr., and my granddad [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] [name_m]Charles[/name_m] [name_m]Jr[/name_m]., who married [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Angela[/name_f], whose sister was [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_u]Jean[/name_u]. [name_f]Angela[/name_f] and [name_m]Joe[/name_m] had [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f], [name_f]Theresa[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f], [name_u]Michael[/name_u] [name_m]Joseph[/name_m], [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f], [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] [name_m]Joseph[/name_m], and [name_m]Gregory[/name_m] [name_m]Joseph[/name_m]. [name_f]My[/name_f] mother [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], had a [name_f]Maria[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f], [name_m]Joseph[/name_m], and [name_f]Mary[/name_f] in addition to three other kids who have Saints names, but not [name_f]Mary[/name_f] or [name_m]Joseph[/name_m]. And then there are the confirmation names, but that’s a whole other story : ) Sorry if I rambled!
