I am not considering the name [name]Marie[/name]/[name]Mary[/name] for a child, but I was wondering what opinions on the two spellings are. I understand that [name]Marie[/name] is the French variation, and I wanted to know if it seems too cutesy or if it is viewed with the same regard as [name]Mary[/name] is?
I have seen [name]Marie[/name] as a middle name on many little girls, and do you like [name]Marie[/name] or [name]Mary[/name] better for a middle name?
Also, what are some longer forms of [name]Marie[/name]/[name]Mary[/name] that you like? I think [name]Mary[/name] could be a cute nickname!
I have also seen people spell it Mery or [name]Merry[/name], and is this a way to make the name more unique or just a different name altogether?
[name]Do[/name] you pronounce [name]Marie[/name] any different from [name]Mary[/name]? I have known people who pronounce it with the emphasis on the second syllable for [name]Marie[/name], and others who pronounce it the same as [name]Mary[/name].
Any comments are appreciated! Again, I am not planning on naming any daughter I ever have [name]Marie[/name] or [name]Mary[/name]…I’m just asking for the sake of curiosity… I apologize for the ridiculously large amount of questions in one thread! Sorry!!
I definitely prefer [name]Marie[/name]. [name]Mary[/name] sounds very old-fashioned, (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing :)) But both names call to mind very different pictures…
I prefer [name]Marie[/name] and prn it differently than [name]Mary[/name], Maybe I’m wrong but I’ve always assumed most people say “mah ree” or even “muh ree” for [name]Marie[/name] and “mare ee” for [name]Mary[/name].
[name]Marie[/name]- Muh-ree
[name]Mary[/name]- [name]Mare[/name]-ee
[name]Merry[/name]- I always connected to merry (as in [name]Merry[/name] [name]Christmas[/name]) like a name more like [name]Joy[/name] than [name]Mary[/name].
[name]Marie[/name] I think of as the go-to middle name of generations past. I think [name]May[/name] feels like the modern day replacement and [name]Grace[/name] is probably the new go-to middle. I prefer [name]Maria[/name] as a first name. [name]Marie[/name] I like more as a first than a middle.
[name]Mary[/name] is simple & sweet. It has a connotation of being religious or an old lady name, but to me it’s like [name]Jane[/name]. [name]Just[/name] perfect, neutral, ages well, gorgeous. I love it.
[name]Merry[/name]- feels more shrill to me. [name]Meredith[/name] tones down that aspect.
I like hyphenated [name]Mary[/name] names like [name]Mary[/name]-[name]Kate[/name]
I like [name]Marta[/name], [name]Martine[/name], [name]Martha[/name], [name]May[/name], [name]Marina[/name], [name]Marlene[/name], [name]Marjorie[/name], [name]Margot[/name], [name]Margo[/name]
I prefer [name]Marie[/name]… it was my granmothers name for if we have a daughter she will have the mn [name]Marie[/name]. I prefer it to [name]Mary[/name] as it sounds fresher to me!
I say it “muh ree”
one way to get [name]Marie[/name] or [name]Mary[/name] as a nn is with the name Esmerie! I adore the name but Dh says NO! I think its adorable though!
[name]Marie[/name] seems to be coming back, it’s been popular as a middle name for a long time but as a first name it’s more common to hear it among the 70+ crowd. [name]Mary[/name] is more plain to the American/English ear, and I tend to assume girls named [name]Mary[/name] come from ultra-[name]Christian[/name] families, although I know that’s not always the case.
Variations I like: [name]Marya[/name] (MAH-ree-ah), [name]Mariana[/name], [name]Mae[/name]/[name]May[/name], [name]Meri[/name] (pronounced like [name]Mary[/name], but has different meaning/origins/associations)
