Lately I have fallen in love with the girl’s name [name]Marin[/name]. This would be pronounced Marr-INN, with the emphasis on the 2nd syllable (like [name]Marie[/name]). It’s just that when I look at the name, I see it pronounced ‘[name]MARE[/name]-in’. I really do prefer the first pronunciation. Opinions, alternate spellings, personal experiences anyone??

[name]Maren[/name] is pronounced [name]Mare[/name]-in.
[name]Marin[/name] is pronounced [name]Mar[/name]-in.
Its actually pronounced Mah-rin. Its the name of the county I live in. If you prefer the alternate pronunciation you could go with [name]Maren[/name] or Merin.
Unfortunately it is one of those names that will get mispronounced no matter how you spell it (kind of like [name]Lucia[/name], [name]Helena[/name]…but the names are beautiful so it is worth the inconvenience!)
To answer your question, I would pronounce [name]Marin[/name] with the emphasis on the second syllable, like Mah-RINN.
I pronounce [name]Maren[/name] as mahr-en (like the “[name]Mar[/name]” in [name]Margaret[/name], empahasis more on the first syllable), but many people also pronounce [name]Maren[/name] like mare-in (like the “[name]Mar[/name]” in [name]Mary[/name]). I have also seen it spelled [name]Merryn[/name] with that pronunciation. I think people are much more likely to say “[name]Mare[/name]-inn” for [name]Maren[/name] rather than [name]Marin[/name]. To get the Mah-RINN pronunciation you are after, I would definitely spell it [name]Marin[/name]. But I also would expect it to be pronounced incorrectly at times, unfortunately I don’t see any way around that! I have a [name]Maren[/name] (pronounced Mahr-en, not [name]Mare[/name]-in), and it gets mispronounced a lot.
I’d say [name]Maren[/name] as ‘mah-ren’ and [name]Marin[/name] like ‘mah-rin’. In both cases they’re one syllable names in my accent and start with the same ‘ma’ as in ‘magic’ and ‘matter’.
I say [name]Marin[/name] (and [name]Maren[/name]) as mare-in. It’s the way both girls I know with the name have pronounced it.
I thought it was pronounced like [name]Maren[/name] (mare-in) until I saw nameberry lists it as Ma-[name]RIN[/name], which I think it prettier, but not very intuitive.
Dancersventure, having lived in Northern [name]California[/name], I learned to pronounce the beautiful county called [name]Marin[/name] as ma-RINN – yes, like [name]Marie[/name] but with an “inn” rather than an “ee” at the end.
But I too when I see the name [name]Marin[/name] think mare-in, equal emphasis on each syllable, rhyming with [name]Karen[/name].
I THINK what people are saying above (a lot of times the phonetic descriptions confuse rather than illuminate the issue – we are in the process of building in audio pronunciations to the site – is that [name]Maren[/name] rhymes with [name]Karen[/name] and [name]Sharon[/name] whereas [name]Marin[/name] is pronounced like the country with that second syllable emphasis.
But I agree, this is less than intuitive and unfortunately, this lovely name would be mispronounced frequently over a lifetime.
My first inclination was to pronounce it ma-[name]RIN[/name], but I met a girl with that name and her family pronounced it [name]MARE[/name]-in.
Looks like these names definitely alternate depending on an accent then. Here, my name - [name]Karen[/name] - is pronounced with one syllable and there’s no ‘care’ sound involved.
I would have pronounced it [name]Mare[/name]-in, which I prefer over Mah-rinn.
I think if you wanted [name]Marin[/name] to sound like mah-RINN (with emphasis on the second syllable) you should use an accent, like [name]Mar[/name]ín. When I see [name]Marin[/name] though I think of MAH-rin, emphases on the first syllable but still a soft a. Almost like my name, [name]Marissa[/name].
[name]How[/name] to get [name]Marin[/name] to sound like [name]MARE[/name]-in? Maerin, [name]Maren[/name]… I’m not sure honestly! I think Maerin and [name]Maren[/name] look likke [name]MARE[/name]-in but it looks a tad choppy spelled these ways.
Honestly if you introduce yourself as [name]MARE[/name]-in people will call you that, and it’ll only take one correction for someone to get the way you want to pronounce it 
[name]Just[/name] like when on first seeing [name]Marissa[/name] half people say mah-riss-uh and others say mah-reese-uh. Depending on how I introduce myself everyone goes by what I say.

When I was Au Pair in [name]France[/name] a few years ago my host mums boyfriend had a son named [name]Marin[/name]- say Ma-[name]Ra[/name]. In English - and for a girl - I´d pronounce it [name]Mare[/name]-in. Maybe you should consider a different spelling of the name?
I would think you named your baby after [name]Marin[/name] County.
I knew a girl named Mairin in HS (pronounced [name]MARE[/name]-in)
my name’s Maerin and I pronounce it Mayrn, with one syllable. However, it only sounds proper if someone Scottish or Irish says it, as I’m Scottish and when American and English people say it it doesn’t sound right.
