Over the past few months, I have been really falling in love with the name [name_m]Mathis[/name_m]! I especially adore it in [name_u]French[/name_u] (mah-TEES), but can understand why Americans would default to MATH-iss. The love has deepened enough that I’m considering adding him to my list, so I could use some opinions.
- What do you picture a [name_m]Mathis[/name_m] to be like?
- Would using the [name_u]French[/name_u] pronunciation be a total nightmare to deal with?
- [name_m]Can[/name_m] you see [name_m]Mathis[/name_m] being a brother to [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], [name_m]Caspar[/name_m], [name_u]Avery[/name_u], [name_m]Boaz[/name_m], [name_u]Aquila[/name_u], [name_m]Bartholomew[/name_m], [name_m]Lorcan[/name_m], [name_m]Jack[/name_m], [name_m]Barnabas[/name_m], [name_m]Judah[/name_m], [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m], [name_u]Augustine[/name_u], [name_m]Reef[/name_m], [name_m]Eoghan[/name_m], [name_u]Asa[/name_u], [name_m]Samuel[/name_m]?
- MN suggestions for [name_m]Mathis[/name_m]? I honestly have no clue what I would pair with [name_m]Mathis[/name_m] as middles lol.

I have never heard of it as [name_m]Math[/name_m]-iss, always muh-TEES, and i’m in the US

Im in the US and haven’t heard of [name_m]Mathis[/name_m]. [name_u]Or[/name_u] at least if I have I didn’t know it was spelled this way. I would probably say it wrong but I would know that I was likely to say it wrong, if that makes sense. Its not a strange pronunciation just an unfamiliar name for me. It would only be a problem if I had to read it and most introductions arent made that way anyway.

I’m not gonna lie the name of this caught my eye because [name_m]Mathis[/name_m] is my stepdads last name! Pronounced [name_m]Math[/name_m]- es. He always says [name_m]Math[/name_m] is fun when people comment on his name. Never realized that it could be a first name and that it was pronounced other ways. That being said I don’t picture any of the names you picture as siblings but rather other surname names turned first names like [name_m]Smith[/name_m], [name_m]Thompson[/name_m], [name_u]Collins[/name_u], etc.

Reminds me of a TV judge, I think? Never watched but I feel like old commercials come to mind where it was said Mah-this (a like apple). I like the [name_u]French[/name_u] pronunciation more than the look of the name. I think your list is pretty eclectic so it does vibe with the rest of the names you have.
I think [name_u]Matisse[/name_u] would give the proper pronunciation in [name_u]America[/name_u] (unless the [name_u]French[/name_u] pronounce that differently).

I don’t think using the [name_u]French[/name_u] pronunciation would be a big issue. [name_f]My[/name_f] instinctive pronunciation is “MAT-iss,” but “mah-TEES” makes sense as well and wouldn’t be difficult to remember or anything.
Mathis goes fairly well with those other names; it has a similar feel as a lot of the names, though it’s quite different in my mind than, say, [name_m]Jack[/name_m] and [name_u]Avery[/name_u]. I kind of feel like with the [name_u]French[/name_u] pronunciation it would sound best with other [name_u]French[/name_u] names, but that’s not a must. [name_m]Mathis[/name_m] and [name_u]Asa[/name_u] or [name_m]Mathis[/name_m] and [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] are nice.

I have only seen this as a last name and would have thought [name_m]Math[/name_m]-is but I really like it as a first name! Mah-tees is a cool pronunciation although not obvious to me (in the US). But again I really like it.

I love [name_m]Johnny[/name_m] [name_m]Mathis[/name_m] and that’s how I say it and think of it.
I think he’d be nicknamed [name_m]Math[/name_m].
But otherwise it is fine.

I initially read [name_m]Mathis[/name_m] as math-iss but the [name_u]French[/name_u] pronunciation makes as much sense! I’ve never heard of it in the US but it seems familiar for some reason. I think, like with most ambiguously pronounced names, it might be annoying to correct some people the first few times but overall wouldn’t be a huge deal.

I really like [name_m]Mathis[/name_m]! It reminds me of my mom and her crush on singer [name_m]Johnny[/name_m] [name_m]Mathis[/name_m]. [name_f]My[/name_f] pronounciation is [name_m]Math[/name_m]-EES but that’s probably not correct at all. Lol

I have never heard of the name Mathis myself, but I like it. It sounds like Matisse, which, correct me if I’m wrong, is a style of painting😀

I did misread it at [name_m]Mathias[/name_m] at first. Ma-tees seems easy enough to me as [name_m]Mathias[/name_m] can be Ma-thy-is or Ma-tee-is.
I like the name. a picture a sweet little boy, shy, but has a bubbly personality when he opens up. He is also very smart and a goofball.
As for brothers, I think [name_m]Mathis[/name_m] and [name_m]Caspar[/name_m] are wonderful together! I also like it with [name_u]Asa[/name_u], [name_u]Augustine[/name_u], [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m], [name_m]Lorcan[/name_m], [name_m]Judah[/name_m] and [name_m]Boaz[/name_m].

Thank you, everyone! I appreciate all the feedback. I had known a family with the surname [name_m]Mathis[/name_m] (MATH-iss) too, so I definitely understand the surnamey vibes and the inclination for that pronunciation. [name_m]Mathis[/name_m] is the [name_u]French[/name_u] form of [name_m]Matthias[/name_m], so is not just a surname name. 
[name_u]Matisse[/name_u] is okay but almost feels feminine to me, due to the -sse ending, and almost too reminiscent of the artist when I’m not necessarily trying to honor him. I would prefer to keep away from him, I think.

I’m leaning toward a [name_u]French[/name_u]-light middle, maybe something along the lines of [name_m]Mathis[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]/Alexandre, [name_m]Mathis[/name_m] [name_m]Timeo[/name_m], [name_m]Mathis[/name_m] [name_m]Leo[/name_m], [name_m]Mathis[/name_m] [name_m]Philippe[/name_m], [name_m]Mathis[/name_m] [name_m]Evariste[/name_m], etc., but I’m not sure any of those feel just right yet. “M” names are hard for me to work with for some reason lol.
