Matilda?

Recently I found [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], and I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] it. I think DH would love it to, but haven’t told him. I think [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] would fit perfectly with [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] and [name_m]Tobias[/name_m], and the book [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] was me absolute favorite growing up. Also, [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Esther[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] sounds great to me.

The problem is, I can’t think of any nicknames I love (other than [name_f]Milly[/name_f], which is taken by [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]). [name_u]Matty[/name_u] would sound too much like [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] (Which I hate), [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] too much like [name_f]Millie[/name_f], and [name_f]Tilda[/name_f] is not a name I like at all.

And we have a slight HP theme with the other kids ([name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] [name_m]Vance[/name_m] + [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] Snape), but [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] has no connection. We chose [name_f]Esther[/name_f] for the (very slight) connection to HP, so it may be enough, but this may be a deal breaker for us.

Lastly, [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] begins with an M, same as [name_f]Millie[/name_f], which is what we call [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f], is this to much of a problem? Anything we get with letter initials on it has an E, but I am very opposed to having the same first letter.

Are these reasons to much, or should I consider [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]? Also, do you have any nicknames that would work?

I love it with [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] and [name_m]Tobias[/name_m]! What about the nickname [name_f]Maisie[/name_f]? I kinda like Mazzy or Maz too.

Some HP deep cuts: [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f] Grimblehawk is a character in the Fantastic Beasts mobile game. Does that help?

I know this is more of a stretch than [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] [name_m]Vance[/name_m] or [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] Snape, but… [name_f]Mafalda[/name_f] is the Italian and Portuguese form of [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]! [name_f]Mafalda[/name_f] Hopkirk

Nickname suggestions ~
[name_m]Mads[/name_m]
Maz
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Dolly[/name_f]
[name_f]Mia[/name_f]
[name_f]Tia[/name_f]
[name_f]Ida[/name_f]
[name_f]May[/name_f]
[name_f]Ada[/name_f]
[name_f]Addy[/name_f]
[name_f]Maisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Maud[/name_f]
[name_f]Maia[/name_f]

I think it would be helpful to find a nickname before you worry too much about [name_f]Millie[/name_f] & [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]. It might end up as [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]/[name_f]Millie[/name_f] and [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]/[name_f]Daisy[/name_f] (as an example). If that were the case, the initials never really would line up, anyway!

Good luck

I absolutely adore [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] for you and I would be strongly considering it if I were you. As for nicknames, I don’t think there is an issue with [name_f]Millie[/name_f] and [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] seeing as [name_f]Millie[/name_f] is [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]'s nickname, not full name. I know a [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] who goes by just [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], one who goes by [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] (though I know you don’t like that), and one who goes by [name_f]Tildy[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Maude[/name_f], [name_f]Daisy[/name_f], and [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] could be used as nicknames for [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]. [name_f]Millie[/name_f], [name_u]Toby[/name_u], and [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] are as lovely together as [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f], [name_m]Tobias[/name_m], and [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] are.

[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and fits perfectly with [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] and [name_m]Tobias[/name_m]

I like the suggestion of [name_f]Maisy[/name_f] for a nickname - that’s sweet

Others

[name_f]Mae[/name_f]
[name_u]Allie[/name_u]
[name_f]Mimi[/name_f]
[name_f]Addy[/name_f]

Using the middle names
[name_u]Dessie[/name_u]
[name_f]Tessa[/name_f]
[name_f]Misti[/name_f]

I love the name [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] considering how many times I watched the movie.

A few nicknames I can think of are
[name_f]Milly[/name_f]
[name_f]Maddie[/name_f]
[name_f]Tilly[/name_f]
And [name_f]Dolly[/name_f]

Haha, I was going to suggest [name_f]Mafalda[/name_f] too! Nn [name_u]Mal[/name_u] or [name_f]Fae[/name_f], perhaps?

[name_f]Malkin[/name_f] is another HP name which is actually a derivative of [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], but I’m not sure that will be to your taste.

Perhaps you could consider [name_f]Mafalda[/name_f] Hopkirk and Madam [name_f]Malkin[/name_f] as your HP connection for [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]? It is a gorgeous name (my daughter’ middle!)

I hear you on the lack of nicknames though — that’s why we used it in the middle. I adore your combo of [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Esther[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]; perhaps you could incorporate the middles to find a nn? [name_f]Mimi[/name_f] or [name_f]Mia[/name_f] (for initials M.E.E.), perhaps, or [name_f]Tess[/name_f] (for the prominent T in [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] plus the Es-of [name_f]Esther[/name_f])?

Yes i definitely agree that [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] would be ideal with your children’s names. It’s a distinctive name that can be kept light and creative. I like [name_f]Mae[/name_f], [name_f]Maia[/name_f] or [name_f]Mallie[/name_f] as nicknames. No I really don’t think the M beginning would be confusing. The girls could both hav ‘M’ nicknames or not as you prefer. [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] and [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]-beautiful.

I completely agree that [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] sounds amazing with [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] and [name_m]Tobias[/name_m], it’s a perfect fit! [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Esther[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is a gorgeous combo, very classic and beautiful but also strong and spirited.

As for nicknames, I really like a previous poster’s suggestion of [name_f]Tess[/name_f], I think it sounds really cute, but would grow well from baby to child to adult. Other nicknames I like are [name_f]Mimi[/name_f], [name_f]Mia[/name_f], [name_f]Tia[/name_f], [name_f]Ida[/name_f], [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] and [name_f]Atty[/name_f]. I think it’s also worth bearing in mind that you pick a nickname not related to the name itself if none of the above appeal to you. When I was little my parents called me [name_u]Pepper[/name_u], which has nothing to do with my given name, but ended up being my overriding nickname.

I think otherposters have covered the HP issue thoroughly enough, so I’ll just say that I really don’t think it should be a deal breaker; there are clearly enough links with the series, even if they may be subtle ones.

I also wouldn’t worry about the letters issue, their given names will be different and that is the only situation where it might matter. I would be more flexible on nickname overlap. She will also, judging from what you’ve said, have a different initial for her nickname anyway, so I wouldn’t worry about it!

Good luck!

I actually love [name_f]Maia[/name_f] as a nn (family connections)

I think [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] goes great with [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] and [name_m]Tobias[/name_m]. I personally like [name_u]Mattie[/name_u], but I remember another berry was considering [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f] nn [name_f]Hildie[/name_f] which I think is very cute. Still close to [name_f]Millie[/name_f] but not as close.

ETA: I also just saw that [name_f]Maud[/name_f] is supposedly a form of [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], so that’s another nickname option. I don’t like it as much as the full name but it would be some different sounds.

[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] is a gorgeous name! It’s strong, feminine, and has the same classic British, vintage-but-currently-stylish feel as [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] and [name_m]Tobias[/name_m].

I searched [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] names/connections and there was a portrait in Hogwarts of a lady named [name_f]Maud[/name_f] [name_m]Montague[/name_m]- [name_f]Maud[/name_f] is a form of [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] which is a slight connection? Maud Montague | Harry Potter Wiki | Fandom And others have listed more. The other two have one, more obvious [name_m]Potter[/name_m] connection but [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] would have a few different, subtle ones.

Another nickname option could be [name_f]Ada[/name_f] (ah-dah, ay-dah or add-ah), from the second letter being A and the “da” ending. There’s also [name_f]Addy[/name_f] but if you don’t like [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] you might not be a fan. Or M/[name_f]Em[/name_f] as in the first letter, but that might be confusing as it’d be a more intuitive nickname for [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]?

It works well

I do love [name_f]Ada[/name_f] as a nn. Thanks for all your help!
