Matthias, Matias, or Mattias spelling?

We’re trying to name baby #4, a boy. I looked at my family tree and found a name I love; there’s an ancestor on my side who was named [name]Matias[/name] (he went by [name]Mati[/name], pronounced [name]Matt[/name]-y, according to a relative). I think I like the [name]Matthias[/name] spelling better, though, if we were to use this name. What is nameberry’s collective verdict?

This is all hypothetical, since my husband probably won’t be talked into it even if I lobby hard. But I kind of love it, and a girl can dream…

I like all three spellings because they are all legit in different languages.

I would pronounce [name]Matthias[/name]/[name]Mathias[/name] differently than [name]Matias[/name]/[name]Mattias[/name].

[name]Matthias[/name]/[name]Mathias[/name] - “mah-THYE-as” (I think this can also be pronounced “mah-TEE-as” in [name]German[/name] too but that’s not my initial instict.)

Either way, it’s a great name!

Hm, good point. I’d assumed they were identical. The ancestor in question was Finnish but I am also of [name]German[/name] ancestry, and my mind went to Mah-TEE-as as the way to pronounce [name]Matthias[/name].

So if I want Mah-TEE-as, it sounds like it’s safer to go with [name]Mattias[/name]/[name]Matias[/name]…

[name]Matthias[/name] for sure. [name]Charles[/name] is a great middle name.

I quite like [name]Matthias[/name]! I think it’s very handsome, and [name]James[/name], [name]William[/name], [name]Elise[/name], and [name]Matthias[/name] are lovely together. I’ve always preferred mah-THIGH-ahs, personally, but mah-TEE-as is nice, too. [name]Matthias[/name] seems more classic, so I can see it fitting better with [name]James[/name], [name]William[/name], and [name]Elise[/name], while [name]Mat/nameias seems more exotic. All the options are lovely, though, and I do like [name]Matthias[/name] [name]Charles[/name].

I personally wouldn’t use the h, because that does change the pronunciation. I knew a guy with that name (without the H), and he was quite the looker. :slight_smile:

So [name]Mattias[/name] [name]Charles[/name] for me. Its quite a handsome combo no matter what spelling you chose.

I really like [name]Matthias[/name] the best, but [name]Mathias[/name] is ok. It’s a great name. [name]Ty[/name] is a great nickname too.

I prefer [name]Matthias[/name], but if spelled that way I think it needs to be pronounced Ma-THIGH-us, so that might not be the best spelling option for you.

I think simplified is always best- I would go with [name]Matias[/name].

This is a late response. But my son is [name_m]Matias[/name_m]. Pronounced mah-tee-us. It is a Sephardic Hebrew Old Testament name. The Latin spelling is [name_m]Matias[/name_m]. The [name_m]German[/name_m] spelling is [name_m]Mathias[/name_m]. Both pronounced the same. We love the name. We use [name_f]Mati[/name_f] for short. But pronounce that Mah-tee. People in [name_f]Argentina[/name_f] with the same name do the same. Our son is in middle school now and the biggest mistake was people calling him Mah-tie-us. Which I can’t stand. its a beautiful name though and he loves it as well.

If you want [name_u]Mat[/name_u]-ee-as, I would go with [name_m]Mattias[/name_m]. I personaly say [name_u]Mat[/name_u]-ee-as for [name_m]Mathias[/name_m] but I’m from Europe. My partner says Ma-thye-as.
