I’m thinking about [name_m]Matthias[/name_m] for a future son, pronounced ma-TEE-us. I don’t like the sound of ma-THIGH-us at all. Should I use the Scandanavian spelling, [name_m]Mattias[/name_m], in order to clarify the pronunciation?
Also, do you think it sounds good with brother [name_m]Luke[/name_m]? [name_m]Luke[/name_m] was named after someone very important to me; I’d like to be a bit more adventurous with future names, but I still want them to sound good together.
I’ve always pronounced [name_m]Matthias[/name_m]/[name_m]Mattias[/name_m] as Ma-TIE-us. Have I been doing it wrong? Also, I think it sounds fine with [name_m]Luke[/name_m], but makes it look a little plain.
I pronounce it MAH-tee-us, but I think the stress on the second syllable is far more common outside my country. It would never have occurred to me to put a “th” sound in there, but I think you’re right, some people probably would. So [name_m]Mattias[/name_m] could be the better choice. On the other hand it looks a little incomplete to me…
I absolutely love the name! I think it sounds great with [name_m]Luke[/name_m], both from the famous [name_m]Matthew[/name_m], [name_m]Mark[/name_m], [name_m]Luke[/name_m] and [name_m]John[/name_m], but with a variation on [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] so as to make it less matchy. They’re totally in style I think.
I think [name_m]Luke[/name_m] and [name_m]Matthias[/name_m] work together seamlessly! I’ve always said it mah-THIGH-ahs, but the mah-TEE-ahs prn. seems fairly common, so maybe I’m in the minority here? I am not a huge mah-TEE-ahs fan, personally–I like the “thigh” sound a lot better–but I think [name_m]Matthias[/name_m] is great. I would love to meet a little boy with the name.
The “THY” pronunciation is English and the “TEE” is common in many European countries like Germany and Spain. Either pronunciation is acceptable. I’m a “THY” person (that sounds weird!). [name_m]Matthias[/name_m] is a great alternative to the megapopular [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] and I do like the name with [name_m]Luke[/name_m]. [name_m]Luke[/name_m] and [name_m]Matthias[/name_m] sound and look like brothers. I think you’ll get mispronunciations and misspellings whichever way you spell it. I like the “h” in there myself. I wouldn’t want [name_m]Mattias[/name_m] to get [name_u]Matti[/name_u] for a nickname.
I adore [name_m]Matthias[/name_m]! It’s one of my favourite boys’ names. It sounds great with [name_m]Luke[/name_m]. I would definitely pronounce it ma-TEE-as (as in [name_m]German[/name_m]); it’s the name of one of my [name_m]German[/name_m] friends. I also like the [name_m]Mattias[/name_m] spelling and it would probably clear up pronunciation issues in English.
[name_m]Matthias[/name_m] is one of my favorites I pronounce it Ma-thy-as. With the “h” in there I feel that’s the instinctive pronunciation for most Americans, so if you’re in the states I would defiantly spell it [name_m]Mattias[/name_m], you would avoid alot of confusion and mispronunciation this way. btw, love [name_m]Luke[/name_m] and [name_m]Mattias[/name_m] togeather!
I love the name [name_m]Matthias[/name_m], and I think it sounds great with [name_m]Luke[/name_m]. I’ve always pronounced it Ma-TEE-us because I’ve heard the name said by Finns, but I do think pronunciation could be a problem in the US where the name isn’t as common. The [name_m]Mattias[/name_m] spelling might help with pronunciation, but you then you have potential spelling issues.
[name_u]Love[/name_u] the name. If your concerned about people mispronouncing it how about [name_m]Matteo[/name_m]? Doesn’t sit as well as [name_m]Matthias[/name_m] does with [name_m]Luke[/name_m]
