May vs Mae

We are leaning more towards [name_f]May[/name_f]/Mae as a middle name. We are not sure on spelling though. The reason we are wanting to use [name_f]May[/name_f]/Mae is because my husband was born in [name_f]May[/name_f].

SO…
In 1 hand we like [name_f]May[/name_f] due to it being the direct spelling of why we are choosing this name.
BUT…
On the other hand, I prefer the spelling of [name_f]Mae[/name_f].

I keep wavering back and forth making reasonable arguments for each, lol. I just can’t decide.

What would you do? TIA

(first name will most likely be [name_f]Stella[/name_f] with a possibility of being [name_f]Sophie[/name_f])

I prefer [name_f]May[/name_f] but maybe because it’s a family name for me!! [name_f]Mae[/name_f] is still beautiful though, and [name_f]Stella[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f] is gorgeous!!

I much prefer the [name_f]May[/name_f] spelling! [name_f]Mae[/name_f] looks incomplete to me, and like a misspelling of the month [name_f]May[/name_f].

I think I prefer [name_f]May[/name_f]…[name_f]May[/name_f] like you say is the birth month, which is a nice nod to your partner. I feel it’s the more solid option. Also [name_f]Mae[/name_f] to me feels a bit unfinished?

I prefer [name_f]Mae[/name_f] for a name and [name_f]May[/name_f] for the month and asking permission!
[name_f]Stella[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f] is gorgeous!

Mae! I just prefer the look of it, it’s so pretty. Also, for some reason [name_f]May[/name_f] feels like an overused filler middle, while [name_f]Mae[/name_f] feels sweet and exciting!

(also, [name_f]Mae[/name_f] absolutely still honors [name_f]May[/name_f]!)

My favorite spelling is [name_f]May[/name_f]. [name_f]Mae[/name_f] looks adorable but it makes me think about the word mãe (mother). I prefer the association with the month.

If you prefer [name_f]Mae[/name_f], then I’d pick that. I personally prefer [name_f]May[/name_f].

I prefer [name_f]May[/name_f]. But I’m biased as its a family name.

Mae looks like a name of a person ([name_f]Mae[/name_f] [name_u]West[/name_u] for example), while [name_f]May[/name_f] is automatically a month.

Mae for me! [name_f]May[/name_f] just makes me think of the month and I also know some people with the name [name_f]Mae[/name_f].

Either way, it’s a great name. If you like [name_f]Mae[/name_f] better, go with [name_f]Mae[/name_f]. If you (and/or your husband) feel strongly about the month thing, go with [name_f]May[/name_f]. If it’s just a quirky little side note, then I’d say [name_f]Mae[/name_f] is fine.

Personally, idk. I used to strongly pefer [name_f]May[/name_f], but [name_f]Mae[/name_f] is growing on me. Maybe do a poll with your family members (say “[name_f]May[/name_f]/Mae” aloud and ask them which spelling they automatically think of). Also think about which is more common in your area, whether one might have pronunciation/spelling issues with a certain accent, ect.

I prefer [name_f]May[/name_f], but if [name_f]Mae[/name_f] is your preferred spelling then definitely go for that!!

I generally prefer [name_f]Mae[/name_f], too, and I think it could still work for the month way of honoring your husband. However, [name_f]May[/name_f] is more direct and obvious in this case, making me lean toward that spelling for you. You can’tgo wrong, though, so just talk with each other about it and decide on the spelling you really love, the one that makes you smile when you write it out with the first name. :slight_smile:

This may sound weird and it’s probably just me.

But I see [name_f]May[/name_f] as a first name and [name_f]Mae[/name_f] as a middle name or nickname.
