Maya Pronounciation?

I keep seeing the name [name_f]Maya[/name_f] but I don’t know how its pronounced. Is it [name_f]MAY[/name_f]-ah (like the month) or [name_f]MY[/name_f]-ah? [name_f]My[/name_f] husband and I like the name [name_f]Miah[/name_f] ([name_f]MY[/name_f]-ah) and so I was wondering if this was just another spelling of the same name or a different name. Thanks!

[name_f]Maya[/name_f] is pronounced [name_f]MY[/name_f]-uh, and is a wonderful name with a lot of history.

As far as I know, [name_f]Miah[/name_f] is pronounced ME-uh, not [name_f]MY[/name_f]-uh, and is a spelling variation of [name_f]Mia[/name_f].

[name_f]Maia[/name_f] is another option for the [name_f]MY[/name_f]-uh pronunciation.

[name_f]Maya[/name_f] is traditionally pronounced [name_f]MY[/name_f]-uh but I have [name_f]Maya[/name_f] as a favourite with the pronounciation [name_f]MAY[/name_f]-uh. It can go both ways but it is traditionally pronounced [name_f]MY[/name_f]-uh.

I think the [name_f]Miah[/name_f] pronunciation depends on where you are because I have met a [name_f]Miah[/name_f] and an [name_f]Amiah[/name_f] and both are said [name_f]My[/name_f]-ah. But thanks for clarifying the pronunciation of [name_f]Maya[/name_f]!

I say [name_f]MY[/name_f]-uh
[name_f]Miah[/name_f] is ME-uh

It’s Mah-ya for me which resembles [name_f]MY[/name_f]-uh enough that I would go for that pronunciation.

Interesting. I’ve met a few Mayas/Amayas (scattered all over the country) but I’ve never heard of a single [name_f]Miah[/name_f] before (and would automatically pronounce it mee-ah.) Must be a weird, regional pocket thing.

[name_f]Maya[/name_f] = [name_f]MY[/name_f]-uh
[name_f]Miah[/name_f] = MEE-uh (just like [name_f]Mia[/name_f])

I personally pronounce [name_f]Maya[/name_f]/[name_f]Maia[/name_f] as ‘may-ah’ and [name_f]Mia[/name_f]/[name_f]Miah[/name_f] as ‘me-ah’.

To get to your desired ‘my-ah’, I would spell the name [name_f]Mya[/name_f] or maybe [name_f]Miya[/name_f], although I know a [name_f]Miya[/name_f] whose name is pronounced ‘me-ah’.

I know one [name_f]Maya[/name_f] and she pronounced is [name_f]May[/name_f]-uh. It looks like [name_f]May[/name_f]-uh. Everyone always mispronounced it [name_f]My[/name_f]-ah though. I’d go with the name [name_f]Maia[/name_f] if you want the [name_f]My[/name_f]-ah pronunciation.

[name_f]Miah[/name_f] is a creative spelling of [name_f]Mia[/name_f], there’s no difference in the pronunciation or origin, it’s still [name_f]Mia[/name_f]. Some choose to say names differently, but that doesn’t always make it correct  The [name_f]Miah[/name_f]'s that are pronounced like [name_f]My[/name_f]-ah could very well be [name_f]Amiah[/name_f]'s, with [name_f]Miah[/name_f] for short. [name_f]Amiah[/name_f] is a totally unrelated name to [name_f]Miah[/name_f] though (in terms of origins), and [name_f]Amiah[/name_f] is [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-my-ah.

[name_f]Maya[/name_f] can be [name_f]May[/name_f]-ah or [name_f]My[/name_f]-ah, but I think it’s most commonly [name_f]My[/name_f]-ah. Another spelling variant is [name_f]Maia[/name_f] which I believe is mythological? There’s also [name_f]Mya[/name_f] or even [name_f]Myah[/name_f].

I don’t get why people prn it my-a. An ‘ay’ is an ‘ay’ sound normally so [name_f]Maya[/name_f] should be may-a.

I’ve always said it in my head as [name_f]May[/name_f]-UH because that is how it looks to me.

I would spell [name_f]MY[/name_f]-UH as [name_f]Mya[/name_f]. The A between the M and Y really throws me off for some reason. [name_f]Mya[/name_f] looks cleaner and more modern. I just really hate the [name_f]Maya[/name_f] spelling.
