Two questions! Well, three. I relegated [name_f]Mazarine[/name_f] to MN status b/c I think it has pronunciation issues but I have been crushing on it lately. It means blue, specifically a blue butterfly; and it’s also a type of succulent plant. My sis has a blue butterfly tattoo and my mom has a succulent garden of the mazarine species. Plus, I like the band Mazzy [name_f]Star[/name_f], which is from my old stomping grounds. So it has a lot of meaning for me. I’m playing with [name_f]Mazarine[/name_f] in my signature but I’m still skeptical of using it as a FN! Ordinarily, I have [name_m]ZERO[/name_m] tolerance for a name with pronunciation ambiguity. But I am tempted to use [name_f]Mazarine[/name_f] as a FN anyway…

I like the meanings behind the name, but it sounds a lot like margarine if I’m saying it right. I automatically read it as maz-ah-reen.
And the nn Mazzy is cute, one of my closest friends growing up was a Maz.

I would also pronounce it Maz-ah-reen. [name_u]Love[/name_u] nn’s Maz/Mazzy even [name_u]Mars[/name_u] could work as a spunky nn! I really like the name, it’s pretty, unusual and it’s got a beautiful meaning…I think it’s totally usable!!

1) To you is [name_f]Mazarine[/name_f] pretty/weird/nice/gp/useable for a FN? It’s definitely pretty and unique. It might work in a European country.
2) [name_m]How[/name_m] would YOU pronounce it? I’m not sure. I seem to think of a different pronounciation everytime I see this name. If someone were to correct me once, I would definitely correct my pronounciation: Meh-zer-een or [name_f]May[/name_f]-zer-een or Mah-zer-een
3) WDYT of the nn Mazzy? I like Mazy (pronounced like [name_f]Maisie[/name_f]) as a nickname! I’m not sure whether Mazzy sounds like [name_f]May[/name_f]-zy or Mah-zy

It’s definitely outside my comfort zone, but prn is no problem. My biggest hung up is that it looks too close to margarine

I adore [name_f]Mazarine[/name_f]. To me, it is very stylish, European chick and feminine without frills. I think it is usable if you pick the right middle name and a very pretty option for a middle name. I have [name_f]Esme[/name_f] [name_f]Helena[/name_f] [name_f]Mazarine[/name_f] on my own list.
I pronounce it like something between may-za-reen and muh-za-reen. I am not 100% sure about [name_m]French[/name_m] pronounciation though.
I quite like Mazzy if it is pronounced like [name_f]Maisie[/name_f]. I like [name_f]Aria[/name_f] as a nickname, too.

!) Gorgeous. Totally usable and adorable.

  1. I don’t see where the pronunciation ambiguity comes in: Mazz–ah–REEN. It’s spelled phonetically.

  2. Mazzy is great.

Margarine is something I didn’t think of. I was more concerned that it’s one letter away from magazine. I also didn’t think of mispronunciation of the first syllable (may- or mah-)! I was more concerned about the last syllable, since -line can be seen as -leen or -line.

Anyone else want to weigh in? [name_m]How[/name_m] would you pronounce [name_f]Mazarine[/name_f]? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like Mazzy (rhymes with jazzy) for a nn? :slight_smile:

I really like, and would be thrilled to meet one, though I’m not brave enough to use it myself. [name_f]Mazarine[/name_f] Pingeot says it similar to “meh-zuh-REEN” or “mih-zuh-REEN”.

A close name: I once met a Nazarine in university. Usually the name’s spelled Nazarene (it’s Arabic in origin). [name_f]Mazarine[/name_f] sounds lovely too, exotic and elegant to my ears.
