It is looking like finding a girl name to honor [name_u]Bradley[/name_u] is going to be a lot harder than I thought!
I really like the idea of using a name that means meadow, but I can’t find any I like (I sort of like [name_f]Hallie[/name_f]/[name_u]Halle[/name_u]/[name_u]Halley[/name_u] but not quite loving it). All of the ones that I’ve seen are really trendy sounding or looking which I’m not a fan of. Are there any names meaning “meadow” that aren’t trendy sounding/looking and strictly feminine?
What about just using the name [name_f]Meadow[/name_f]? It’s a little out there stylistically, but it’s got a lovely sound, and it’s been popping up on the forums recently.
If not, [name_f]Aileen[/name_f] and [name_u]Ainsley[/name_u] both have meanings along the lines of “grassy hill” and “meadow.” I believe [name_f]Aileen[/name_f]'s is “from the grassy meadow.” One definition of [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] defines it as “ash tree meadow” or “meadow of ash trees.” Same goes for [name_f]Aisling[/name_f]/[name_f]Ashlin[/name_f]. [name_f]Clover[/name_f] is often described as “meadow flower.” [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] is a Scandinavian name meaning “meadow.” [name_f]Lea[/name_f]/[name_f]Leah[/name_f]/[name_f]Leia[/name_f] all mean “meadow,” as do [name_f]Lena[/name_f] and [name_u]Leslie[/name_u]. [name_f]Shirley[/name_f] as well (“bright meadow”).
I don’t like [name_f]Meadow[/name_f] as a name, sorry I didn’t know [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] meant meadow; I had actually suggested it to my husband before we decided to honor [name_u]Bradley[/name_u]! Sadly, my husband had shot down the name when I first suggested it (he didn’t like the sound of it)
Most of those are too trendy for me; I think it’s the “lee” thing that bothers me…which seems to be a big problem. “[name_u]Lee[/name_u]” names are so popular where we live and they’ve become super trendy along with all of their misspellings which I can’t stand (no offense to people who like different spellings). Is it the “ley” that means meadow? Or are there any names that don’t end in “ley” that mean meadow?
Yes, the -ley ending means ‘clearing’ in Old English specifically which is pretty much translated as meadow. So that’s what you are likely to get for most meadow names.
Have you though of replicating the sound without the -ley? Some name that starts with Bra-? Like [name_f]Braelyn[/name_f] or just [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] maybe? [name_f]Brenna[/name_f], [name_f]Brianna[/name_f]…
When I looked up baby girl names that mean meadow, re majority of them had the -ley or -lee ending.
Have you considered using another nature name? One that doesn’t necessarily mean meadow?
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you like any of the following?
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f]
[name_f]Fleur[/name_f]
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
Or, names that make me think of meadows?
[name_f]Avalon[/name_f] - could use nn [name_f]Ava[/name_f] if you like
[name_f]Aveline[/name_f]
Or, you could use a name that starts with a B in the first or middle name spot to honor [name_u]Bradley[/name_u]?
[name_f]Briar[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]
[name_f]Bethany[/name_f]
[name_u]Bryn[/name_u]
[name_f]Bridget[/name_f]
[name_f]Brianna[/name_f]/[name_f]Briana[/name_f]
[name_u]Brooke[/name_u]
This is hard. While [name_u]Bradley[/name_u] is an OK name for a male, it just sounds unattractive for a female.
Could you give her a name that starts with a B and then have [name_f]Meadow[/name_f] be her middle name? I love the name [name_f]Meadow[/name_f].
There’s [name_f]Brenda[/name_f], but that’s a bit clunky.
Or you could call her [name_f]Meadow[/name_f] and give her a B middle name.
Or you could find out the meaning of [name_u]Bradley[/name_u] and seek out another name that means that too.
Good luck!
[name_u]Leslie[/name_u]
PS There are a number of names that remind me of meadows. Pleasant. Many of the flower names. Afternoon. Harvest. Maybe make a list of names that feel mellow and meadowy to you.
I kind of figured that’s what the “ley” meant This sucks; there are so many other factors that are already part of the name that it’s getting really hard to find any girl name. [name_f]Braelyn[/name_f] is way too trendy and I don’t find it pretty. I like [name_f]Brenna[/name_f] however we can’t use the name (same with [name_f]Brynn[/name_f]).
I like most nature names (mainly flowers) but I wouldn’t use them to honor [name_u]Bradley[/name_u] because I don’t see the connection. The reason for meadow was because of [name_u]Bradley[/name_u]'s meaning; if it were just any random nature name, I don’t really get the connection feeling. Same with B names, I’m really weary on them. I like [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] and I can get the idea of the Br- thing but at the same time it just doesn’t feel like we’d be honoring him, if that makes sense. Middle name spot can’t have anything to do with [name_u]Bradley[/name_u]'s name; we already have two middle names picked out (family importance) and neither have anything to do with any part of [name_u]Bradley[/name_u]'s name (including middle name)
I’m thinking we just have to keep the idea of honoring him for a boy since I’m fairly certain we won’t find a girl name
I think you may have misread the post…we don’t want to use [name_u]Bradley[/name_u] as a girl name at all; we are honoring someone named [name_u]Bradley[/name_u] and looking for a girl variant. [name_u]Bradley[/name_u] means meadow and I was trying to find girl names that mean that as well, that was the point of this thread. I REALLY dislike [name_f]Meadow[/name_f] as a name and wouldn’t consider it; two middle names are already chosen and neither have anything to do with [name_u]Bradley[/name_u] so it has to be in the first name. The idea of using any other nature name doesn’t sit well with me, it doesn’t really feel like we’d be honoring [name_u]Bradley[/name_u] if we do that.
Yeah without the B or the -ley ending there isn’t much left to the name. Maybe you could honor this person by their middle or last name? or something you associate with the person?
Well . . . [name_u]Bradley[/name_u] means wide meadow. The ley part means meadow; the brad part means wide. One girl name that shares this meaning is [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]: healthy, wide. It’s a very cute name for a little girl in my opinion.
