Meaning of the name I love

I have a name that I love and have loved for a long time. But, I don’t particularly like the meaning of the name. I’ve looked down countless lists and can’t find another name I love as much, do I just forget about the meaning?

I think if the meaning is actively off-putting, that’s one thing, but if it’s just that the meaning is not particularly exciting then I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite is [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] which means ‘gazelle’ :woman_shrugging:t2: not the most romantic, but I like the name enough for lots of other reasons that I just ignore the meaning!

I guess it depends on if meaning is something really important to you. I think unless it’s something really unflattering, it’s fine since most people won’t know the meanings of names. Maybe the meaning/connection of this name to you, rather than it’s literal definition, is more important.

@persephonescrown @carrington both very valid points  the name is [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] & the meaning is ‘dark’ or ‘dark haired’. I think I just love the name so much, I was a little bit disappointed it doesn’t have a more uplifting meaning as in my opinion the name is so beautiful!

[name_f]My[/name_f] name has a negative meaning and it’s never bothered me – I love my name! If meaning is important to you I can understand why it’s off-putting, but if you really love the name I think that personal love should overpower the etymological meaning.

I also don’t think “dark haired” is a bad meaning at all? It’s neutral in my mind.

Either way, [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] doesn’t meant “dark haired”. It means “from Arcy”, Arcy being a town in [name_u]France[/name_u].

That’s really good to know, as I think part of me is overthinking it because I want her to love her name. You go one name sites and there’s so many beautiful meanings behind them that I wish this one had something more symbolic, but I just can’t seem to find a name that I love the same, or more!

Yes I think that’s the [name_u]French[/name_u] meaning, but if you just type in meaning of [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] it also pulls through the [name_u]Irish[/name_u] meaning

I think so. Most people won’t know the meaning :person_shrugging: You could always use a really positive meaning middle to balance it out. (Like Cecilia Joy → blinding joy or Tristan Luca → after sadness, he brings light)

Edit: knowing it’s Darcy, you could do:

Darcy Joy → from darkness comes joy
Darcy Lucia → darkness becomes light
Darcy Estella → dark star (for a celestial type meaning)

[name_u]Darcy[/name_u], as an [name_u]Irish[/name_u] surname, also appears to come from the [name_u]French[/name_u] town. The [name_u]Irish[/name_u] word for dark is “dorcha”, which is superficially similar, but no reliable sources indicate there’s an etymological connection.

[name_u]Love[/name_u] this idea!

I’m just going off google and all of the baby name websites that provide the meaning which is what she’s going to see if she ever googles it when she gets older, hence me wanting it to be more positive. But as another commenter said, using an uplifting middle name could be the perfect solution

I adore the name [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] but the meaning doesnt bother me
