[name_m]Hi[/name_m] all
I had a little girl a few weeks ago and we have called her [name_f]Megan[/name_f]. We want to use the nickname [name_f]Meggie[/name_f].
I prefer to spell it as above; [name_f]Meggie[/name_f]
However my husband keeps writing it down as [name_f]Meggy[/name_f]
Another family member is just using [name_f]Meggi[/name_f]
Which is right?
Does it matter if people spell a nickname in different ways?
It’s frustrating me as I assumed when we announced [name_f]Megan[/name_f]/ [name_f]Meggie[/name_f] everyone would spell it that way  my husband and I had discussed how to spell [name_f]Megan[/name_f] but we both thought our spelling of [name_f]Meggie[/name_f] / [name_f]Meggy[/name_f] was the obvious one
While I don’t feel that it is really important, as a nn, I would say that i or ie ending is more appropriate.
I don’t think it’s very important that it’s spelled the same way, probably over time people will pick up on your spelling of [name_f]Meggie[/name_f]. That’s what happened with my baby cousin [name_f]Vivie[/name_f] - everyone spelled it [name_f]Vivi[/name_f] until we got the [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] cards from her parents!
I think [name_f]Meggie[/name_f] is the one I would automatically go for, but I guess [name_f]Meggy[/name_f] is similar to [name_f]Peggy[/name_f].
Probably because of [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], [name_f]Meggie[/name_f] feels like the most intuitive spelling to me. I agree with @maerad, hopefully soon people will start picking up on your spelling. If she will primarily go by [name_f]Megan[/name_f], though, I think it might be okay if there is a little variation in the spelling of [name_f]Meggie[/name_f]. Good luck!
[name_f]Meggie[/name_f] seems more intuitive, but I prefer [name_f]Meggy[/name_f].
I would say all are acceptable spellings, but as a [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] nicknamed [name_f]Meg[/name_f] who often gets called [name_f]Meggie[/name_f], too, the -ie spelling is the one I tend to “visualize” as the spelling (since it never gets written down).
I don’t think the spelling of a nickname is that important in most cases. Our daughter’s nickname is [name_f]Cate[/name_f], but if somebody spells it [name_f]Kate[/name_f], it’s not a huge deal, especially if it is some random stranger. I do prefer that family members and close friends use the C spelling since they should know better by now, but as long as it’s not like on some personalized gift or something…eh, whatever.
In your case, first I would determine just how you want to use [name_f]Meggie[/name_f]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you see it primarily as a vocal nickname that will rarely be written down, or do you see it more as her “every day” name that will be used on personalized gifts, homework, nametags? In the first case, I don’t think the spelling matters that much, but if it is the second case, I think you and your husband need to figure out what the “official” spelling will be, which will then become the correct spelling, no matter which version you choose.
[name_f]Meggie[/name_f]. I don’t like how the g and y look in [name_f]Meggy[/name_f], lol.
[name_f]Meggie[/name_f] looks best to me.
I would assume [name_f]Meggie[/name_f] (great name btw!)
I don’t think it’s a huge deal but this would annoy me too. [name_f]Meggie[/name_f] is her name just as much as [name_f]Megan[/name_f] is, and you’d get annoyed if people kept spelling that [name_f]Meghan[/name_f]! Still, she’s still very little and I’m sure as you write her name in cards and messages etc. people will soon cotton on and follow your lead.
