Hey, so I don’t know baby’s gender yet but love the idea of [name_u]Mercury[/name_u]. [name_m]How[/name_m] useable is it as a first name? Does it evoke hippie, hipster, or lunatic (like the astronomical etymology there?) or can I pull it off. I mean, no one makes fun of [name_m]Bruno[/name_m] [name_u]Mars[/name_u] for his stage name. [name_m]Just[/name_m] curious what people’s first impressions are. I’m not easily offended so candid responses are fine.
[name_u]Mercury[/name_u]'s been a big gp of mine for a while. It holds quite a lot of meaning for me. But I think it might be too much for a first. The poisoning aspect is what gets me, but even that I could waver on. Brilliant in the middle though, @truenature’s son has [name_u]Mercury[/name_u] as a middle.
Middle for sure. Not going lie kind of thought of [name_u]Mercury[/name_u] as poison but I do actually think it is a really cool name!
As someone who loves celestial/mythological names, I like the idea of it. But I much prefer it in the middle spot. I like the feeling and meaning evoked with [name_u]Mercury[/name_u], but I don’t like the name as much aesthetically. I think some people will also think of mercury poisoning unfortunately. The more I think about it, the more I like it as a middle name option! But I kind of hate it as a first name.
What about [name_m]Hermes[/name_m]? Or a variation on [name_m]Hermes[/name_m]? (The Greek version of [name_u]Mercury[/name_u])
I have always thought it would make a great middle.
@tfzolghadr: “the mullet approach” is a brilliant way of describing it! I could not help giggling.
I wouldn’t be shocked by first name [name_u]Mercury[/name_u], and I generally like pretty out-there names, but I don’t care for this one. I thought of the car model, then mythology, then the planet, then the 1960s NASA program. I don’t immediately get a punk-rocker-mohawk feel on this name, because there are just so many aerospace associations I have. I’d think the parents were mega astronomers or worked for NASA (especially for a girl [name_u]Mercury[/name_u]). The car really kills it for me, though. The [name_u]Mercury[/name_u] division of [name_m]Ford[/name_m] is now defunct, although the car likely could remain an association for anyone interested in cars in 2000 or before.
I don’t personally like the look or sound of [name_u]Mercury[/name_u], but I do think it’s definitely usable in the middle. My first thoughts were of the cars, the planet, and then mercury poisoning. It’s certainly not the most wearable/accessible…but, in the middle, I don’t think that would be a problem. I don’t really get any type of image when I try to picture a person with the first name [name_u]Mercury[/name_u]
Lol ok I’m getting a strong middle name response–so off the first name list for sure. Funny, my first thought was [name_u]Freddie[/name_u] [name_u]Mercury[/name_u], poison never crossed my mind. I like the idea of [name_m]Hermes[/name_m], because the draw for either name is my interest in mythology, but I truly don’t like the sound of [name_m]Hermes[/name_m]. It’s too close to Herpes for my taste. Sorry to any parents of children named [name_m]Hermes[/name_m].
I think it’s back to the drawing board for me. I love [name_m]Apollo[/name_m], too, but he [name_f]Gwen[/name_f] [name_f]Stefani[/name_f] connection is mildly annoying.
My first thought is heavy metal poisoning, but I agree there are many other cool associations.
Thanks for all the input everyone. Unfortunately it looks like I might be miscarrying this little one, so I am going to take a break from nameberry but I appreciate your ideas. I will pocket them for another time.
Middle. That way he can go by that if he wants to, but doesn’t have to. Makes me think of [name_u]Freddy[/name_u] [name_u]Mercury[/name_u] from [name_f]Queen[/name_f].
@cocoapuff - I’m so sorry. Take care.
Thank you.
