What do you think of [name_u]Meredith[/name_u]? I like older names. I’ve said I was going to name my first daughter [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] since I was 16 years old, before it started climbing up the top 100 lists.
I also love [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], but it’s growing in popularity, and will probably soon soar since Duchess [name_f]Kate[/name_f] used it for her daughter. [name_m]Just[/name_m] my luck! Maybe I’ll get to use one of those two on possible second daughter.
I like [name_u]Meredith[/name_u] because it is very uncommon. I can picture it on a teenager and an adult, but I’m not sure about a baby or a young child. What do you think? I have a hard time with nicknames for [name_u]Meredith[/name_u]. I don’t like [name_f]Meri[/name_f] (any spelling), because it just sounds like [name_f]Mary[/name_f], which I’m not a huge fan of. Of course there’s Mer, but that’s just a cute, quick nickname, not something you really would “go by.” Maybe her middle name will help provide a nickname?
Sorry for the long post. I’m never short-winded.
Please give me your honest opinion on the name, and any possible nickname ideas.
Thanks!
I think [name_u]Meredith[/name_u] is gorgeous. I think you could use the NNs [name_f]May[/name_f], [name_f]Maisie[/name_f], [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], [name_f]Maude[/name_f], [name_f]Mimi[/name_f].
I think [name_u]Meredith[/name_u] is gorgeous. It’s always been a name that’s appealed to me BECAUSE it doesn’t have an obvious nickname. Sure, there’s Mer or [name_f]Meri[/name_f] (I also do not like), but I think the beauty of this name is that you will call her [name_u]Meredith[/name_u]. Why does she NEED a nickname? In my opinion, nicknames should come organically as you get to know the child as opposed to naming her something and already picking out her nickname. This is why I personally love the name [name_f]Daphne[/name_f]–it doesn’t really lend itself to a nickname. Sure, there’s Daph, which is just something you say on the quick. I highly doubt she’s going to ask her friends and teachers to call her Daph, therefore, everyone will call her [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], which is perfect, because we love the full name.
As for seeing this name on a baby or a young child, I totally could. I actually knew a [name_u]Meredith[/name_u] when I was much younger and everyone called her by her full name, which I loved. It just seems silly to discount a perfectly gorgeous name just because it doesn’t have a nickname she can exclusively go by.
Thank you both! Hoping more opinions will roll in…
I think [name_u]Meredith[/name_u] is lovely - I knew one in high school and I’ve been fond of it ever since. It does feel like kind of a big name for a baby, but not drastically more so than a lot of names that are coming back into style, and even if it did feel quite substantial for a child, it’d be worth it in the long term because of how great a name it is beyond childhood.
I love Mer as a nickname (in part because it’s the [name_m]French[/name_m] word for “sea” or “ocean”), but [name_f]Mimi[/name_f], [name_f]Mera[/name_f], and maybe [name_f]DeeDee[/name_f] could work, too. Personally, though, I don’t place that much emphasis on nicknames when you’re choosing names - there’s a good chance that a nickname unrelated to the name could pop up (along the lines of “[name_u]Blue[/name_u]” for a child with very blue eyes), and nicknames aren’t really crucial anyway. I wouldn’t let the lack of appealing nickname turn me off a name I loved.
I love [name_u]Meredith[/name_u], especially nn Mer as in [name_u]Grey[/name_u]'s Anatomy, when she’s called [name_u]Meredith[/name_u] most of the time but Mer slips in occasionally. [name_f]Mimi[/name_f] and maybe even the spunky [name_u]Red[/name_u] could work. I also think [name_u]Meredith[/name_u] and [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] work as a sibset, if it helps.
