I like the idea of a “concept” or “virtue” name for a girl, and I think [name]Grace[/name], [name]Hope[/name], [name]Verity[/name], etc. are nice, but I’m looking for something a little more… active? Vigorous, maybe? I like [name]Honor[/name], but what I’ve really latched onto lately is Merit. I [name]LOVE[/name] the meaning and the way it sounds, but is it name-y enough?
Also, any suggestions for the mn slot? I’d like something classic and feminine since the first name is so different.
If you want it to look more name-y then you could spell it [name]Merritt[/name]. The only person I’ve known with that name is a girl who spelled it that way.
I know a male “[name]Merritt[/name]” and I agree it seems more like a name spelled that way. I think it’s an awesome name for a girl too, esp with the soft “mare” sound.
[name]Love[/name] it! I know a girl named Merit/[name]Merritt[/name]. She comes to my church sometimes with a friend so I don’t know how she spells it.
I, too, really like Merit. While it is totally not my usual style of name, I spent a good long while thinking about this one and loved it more and more as time went on. I think the fact that it naturally shortens to Mer, makes it just feminine enough. As far as middle names go:
Merit [name]Augusta[/name] (I really love this, but not everyone loves the old lady)
Merit [name]Eliza[/name] (adds a little sass and spunk to the virtue of it)
Merit [name]Olivia[/name]
Merit [name]Evelyn[/name]
Merit [name]Evangeline[/name]
Merit [name]Iris[/name]
Merit [name]Isabel[/name]
Merit [name]Amelia[/name]
Merit [name]Anne[/name]
Merit [name]Anabelle[/name]
Merit [name]Josephine[/name]
Merit [name]Georgiana[/name]
Merit [name]Rosalee[/name]
My daughter’s name is Merit!! Her middle name is [name]Claire[/name] (she’s 21 months now) and I’m on the hunt for a sibling name. I’d love to keep up with the virtue names as long as it isn’t too kitschy. I’m really pleased with the simplicity and strength of the name Merit and if we were to ever give her a nickname it’d most likely be [name]Merry[/name] as she is a dimpled sweet thing.
I’m considering [name]Honor[/name], [name]Gertrude[/name] ([name]True[/name]), [name]Patience[/name]. Boy names are a major problem.
I love this name too. To me it sounds very feminine. [name]Marit[/name] is a popular Scandinavian girl’s name and I have known a couple Marits. I like your spelling as well.
