Merlin

What are your thoughts on [name_m]Merlin[/name_m] for a boy please? I’m in the UK. :grinning:

I like the sound of it but it might be hard to wear over a lifetime

That’s pretty much my thought process too. The wizard reference is strong!

Agreed with pp. I can’t imagine it being wearable in a professional setting

I would use it as a middle name.

Immediately think of the legend and the recent BBC television show. Also, for what it’s worth, here in the southern parts of the USA, the name is just now becoming an outdated old man name. I would definitely use it as a middle name if you super love it!

I live in the US where [name_m]Merlin[/name_m] would be a fine choice, but not sure about the UK. I know a Gandalf and an [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] and they get compliments on their name (both adults, named before the movies.)

I really like [name_u]Taliesin[/name_u] or [name_m]Tallis[/name_m], supposedly [name_m]Merlin[/name_m]'s real name- slightly less obvious wizard reference if you’re worried about that?

I’m not a fan I’m afraid. Maybe as a middle name it’d work. It makes me think of [name_m]Merlin[/name_m] passes for theme parks etc

Thank you everyone  I may be out of the loop but I don’t think the wizard aspect is so prominent here in the U.K.

I’m not a fan of how it sounds, or the wizard connotations.

Instead I’d go with one of these similar names (bolded are my personal favourites):

[name_m]Melwyn/name_m
[name_m]Merfyn[/name_m]

[name_m]Mallen[/name_m]/[name_u]Malin[/name_u]
[name_m]Merwyn[/name_m]
[name_m]Merlen[/name_m]
[name_u]Marron[/name_u]
Mardson
[name_u]Marion[/name_u]

It’s nice, it might be a bit much though. But my motto for naming is “If you love it, use it.”
