Mia vs Maya

We’re really considering using [name]Mia[/name] if we have a girl, but I was just wondering if people get the pronounciation mixed up with “[name]Maya[/name]”. [name]Do[/name] you think the general public (and all family members, including your not so bright aunts and uncles), know how to pronounce “[name]Mia[/name]”? I would hate to pick this name and always have to correct people. I think there’s been confusion more so with “[name]Maya[/name]”, but I think “[name]Mia[/name]” is pretty well known. [name]Even[/name] I used to get confused with a “[name]Maya[/name]” at work awhile ago.

What are your thoughts?

I definitely think the general population know how to pronounce [name]Mia[/name]

I like [name]Mia[/name], and I think most people would pronounce it Me-uh, not like [name]Maya[/name].

[name]Mia[/name] is Me-ah, and [name]Maya[/name] is either [name]May[/name]-uh or My-uh, I’ve heard both being used for that. I think [name]Mia[/name]'s a common enough name (well, it is in the UK, don’t know about other countries) for most people to know how to say it. You might get the odd older person get confused because it’s a fairly modern name I think, all the Mias I know/know of are teenagers or younger, but I think 99% the time people will get it right.

I think that [name]Mia[/name] is popular enough that most people will pronounce it correctly.

I like [name]Mia[/name]! I don’t think anyone will confuse it, really. I think more people confuse [name]Maya[/name]. There’s the [name]Miah[/name] spelling, but I think when people use that spelling, they want the [name]Maya[/name] sound.

Definitely no confusion with the name [name]Mia[/name]! [name]Both[/name] really pretty names, but there should be no confusion with the pronunciation of the name [name]Mia[/name], unless you are going to creative with the spelling and spell it Miea or [name]Meya[/name] or something!

There are some people that will pronounce it wrong. [name]Even[/name] the simplest names, like [name]Mia[/name], are mispronounced. I think generally people will pronounce it [name]Mia[/name].

[name]Mia[/name] is lovely and I think you should use it if it’s your favourite name. If there is a slight mispronunciation with folks a simple correction will put them straight. I can’t see a problem.
